- The loom illustrated comprises the usual 2 frame, a portion of one of the side frames 1 being shown. These sideirames are con--- nected 'by the usual breast beam 2. When the frog 11 is moved forward, it ngages the arm 15 and thus rocks both the brake handle 13 and the controller or shipper 16 from the on or starting position shown in Fig. 1 to the left to the off or stopping position, and these parts are suitably connected to mechanism not necessary to illustrate for applying the brake. and throwing d the power or otherwise stopping the loom.
When the shuttle is properly boxed in the shuttle box, the rear wall 6 is pressed to the left, viewing Fig. 1, rocking the protector finger 8 and the protector rod 7'int0 a po- I sition that holds the dagger in a path above the frog or the steel of the frog as the lay beats up. If, however, the shuttle is absent from the box or improperly boxed, the protector finger 8 is not pressed backward or to the left and stands in the positionshown in Fig. 1 so that as the lay heats up, the dagger 10 moves in a path which brings it into engagement with the steel 20 of the and the frog is moved forward and the loom is stopped.
The filling fork mechanism illustrated is also of a familiar type. A filling fork slide 21 is mounted. to slide back and forth on the breast beam. A filling forkcomprising the A 22 and the looped end 23 is pivoted at 24 on the rearward end of the filling fork slide. A weft hammer 25 fulcrumed at 26 is constantly vibrated by the mechanism of the loom. At its upper end the '5 weft hammer has pivoted thereto at 27 a hook or catch 28 guided on the cross bar 29 of the slide. If the filling is present in the shed when the lay beats up, it engages the tines of the fork and rocks the fork so that its looped end will. not be caught by the hook or catch 23 on the weft hammer. If, however. the filling absent in the shed, the fork will not he tilted and the catch 28 will engage the looped end 23 of the filling fork, and the weft hammer swings forward, the filling; fork slide will be carried bodily forward and through usual mechanism, not necessary further to describe, effect the stopping of the loom.
The present invention has for its object, as already pointed out, to provide manually controlled means for rendering both this protector inecl'ianism and this filling fork mech-, anism inactive so that when this manually controlled means is operated, the loom, may be run without the shuttle or without the filling. This enables the weaver to run the loom under its own power for a few picks without the shuttle or without the filling being present, which is very desirable, particularly in finding the pick.
In the preferred form of the invention illustrated, a threearmed lever is fulorumed at 30 on the loom frame. The upstanding arm 3i provided with a roller 32. The
forwardly extending arm 33 is provided with a forwardly extending rod 34;. An arm 35 is secured to the protector rod 7 in the path of the roller 32 and is so arranged that when the three-armed lever is in the position illustrated in full lines, this arm 35 engaging the roller 32, as the lay beatsup, will rock the protector rod and hold it in the position assumed if the shuttle is in the box, thus holding the dagger 10 in a path which passes above the frog steel 20.
A shield 36 is associated with the weft hammer, in the construction illustrated being fulcrumed thereon at- 37. A rod 38 is pivoted to the forward end of this shield and extends downwardly therefrom and is looped at its lower end to lit over the rod Normally the shield 36 is depressed by gravity so as to be below the catch 28. But if the rod 38 be depressed, the shield is moved into the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, guarding the catch 28 so that it cannot engage the looped end 23 of the filling fork.
Consequently it will be seen that if the three-armed lever is swung into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, both the protector mechanism and the filling fork mechanism will be rendered inactive because, in the case of the former mechanism, the dagger 10 will be guided in a path above the frog steel 20 as the lay beats'up and because,in the case of the latter mechanism, the rod 34 will pull down the rod 38 and hold the shield 36 guarding the catch 28 so that the weft hammer cannot engage the filling fork and move the filling fork slide forward.
This three-armed lever is manually operated tomove it into the position to render the protector mechanism and the filling fork mechanism inactive by a manually operated means and preferably a manually operated means associated with or adjunctive to the controller or shipper handle 16. In the preferred form of this inventiointhis manually controlled means is so arranged that when the handof the operative grasps the shipper handle 16, the thumb of the same hand may be employed to operate this means and hold the protector mechanism and the filling fork mechanism inactive when the shipper handle is moved to and held in the on or starting position, thus allowing the loom to be run by power without the shuttle or the filling being present.
In the construction illustrated, a plunger 39 is mounted in a casing 40. on the shipper handle and this plunger is normally held elevated by the spring 41 in the casing. A Bowden wire has its sheath 12 secured in the casing with its core 43 abutting the plunger. At the other end the sheath of the Bowden wire is secured at 44 to the loom frame adjacent the third or depending arm l5 of the three-armed lever and the core 43 is secured directly to this arm 45.

When the loom has been stopped through the operation of the protector mechanism, the filling fork meehanlsm or, otherwise, the controller or shipper handle will stand in the off or stopping position shown in Fig. 1. If now the operative desires to start and run the loom without the shuttle or without the filling, he seizes theshipper handle in his hand, places his thumb on the plunger 39 and depresses it into the position shown in Fig. 1. This forces the core 43 through the sheath and swings the threearmed lever from its normal position,
shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to the positionis claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters-Patent, is;

A loom comprising a lay provided with shuttle boxes, loom stopping means acting to stop the loom upon absence of filling in the shed or upon absence of the shuttle from the shuttle box, and manually operated means for holding said loom stopping means inactive whereby the loom may be run without filling or without the shuttle.
3. A loom comprising a lay provided with shuttle boxes, a frog acting when moved forward to stop the loom, a dagger carried by the lay and held by the shuttle when boxed to move in a path above the frog but engaging and moving the frog forward when the shuttle is absent from the box on the beat-up, a shipper handle manually movable from starting to stopping position, a spring-pressed plunger on the shipper handle operable by the thumb of the hand'operating the shipper handle, and means operated by the plunger and acting when the plunger is depressed to I deflect the dagger into a path such that'it will not engage the frog upon the'beat-up whereby the loom may be run without the shuttle by holding the plunger depressed.

A loom comprisingia lay provided with shuttle boxes, a frog acting when moved forward to stop the loom, a dagger carried by the lay and held by the shuttle when boxed to movein a path above the frog but engaging and moving the frog forward when-the 7' shuttle absent from the box on the beat-up, filling fork mechanism rendered'active upon hand operating the shipper handle, and
means operated by the plunger and acting when the plunger is depressed to deflect the dagger into-a-path such that it will not engage the frog upon the beat-up whereby the loom may be run without the filling and without the shuttle. I
