To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALoNzo E. RHoADEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, county of Worcester,- vand, State of Massachusetta have 'invented an Im provement in Filling-Replenishing Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to filling replenishing looms, and more particularly to the means for preventingdthe ends of filling being carried into the she f In looms of this general character, 'when replenishment of the filling is effected, prior to the complete exhaustion of the filling in the running shuttle, there is an endl of filling leading from the outgoing filling carrier to the cloth selvage, which is generally denominated the old filling, and there is another filling end leading from the fresh filling carrier to some securing means where the end of the new filling is secured, and such length of filling is generally denominated the new filling end.
Various attempts have been made with more or less success, to prevent the old filling end from being carried into the shed after a replenishing operation, and some efforts y have been made to' effect a similar result with respect to the new filling end. In all these latter attempts, however, the new filling end has been parted at a point so far from the place where the end of the new filling was secured, thata long end of new filling dangled from the securing means and was liable, duringwv the back-and-forth movement of the lay, to be caught by the shuttle or vthe working filling, and lbe carried into the shed.
With the above generally-stated facts in mind, the aims and purposes of the present invention are to provide means whereby the new filling end may be parted at such point of the operating parts, or bythe working filling, and consequently cannot be carried into theV shed. A further purpose of the present invention is to provide parting means' for the new filling end which shall be setlfor. action only upon call for filling replenishment, and shall thereupon part the vnew filling on the' for-i ward movement of the lay subsequentto the replenishing operation.l

The frameof the loom may be of any suitablecharacter' for supporting the operating parts, and as shown comprises the usual standards or uprights 1,l and .breast beam 2.
The filling replenishing mechanism may be of anyusual or desired character, but as herein shown, it comprises the hopper stand or bracket 3 rising from a base plate 4 which may be secured to the breast 'beam 2,as by suitable bolts ,5. Pivotally mounted at 6 upon the usual supporting stud is the transferrer 7, the end 8 of which is adapted to engage a filling carrier 9 mounted as usual in a rotary hopper-10 supported by the hopper' stand or bracket 3 as usual. otally secured thereto, as usual, and adapted when in raised position'to be engaged by a suitable bunter 13 carried by the lay to cause the transferrer to transfer a filling carrier from the rotary hopper to the shuttle in the shuttle-boxbeneath and by such action also, to eject the spent or practically-exhausted filling carrier. v
The positioning of the dog 12 is effected from the ltransverse shaft 14, Figs. 1 and 4, as the'latter is rocked by well -understood mechanism when the usual indicator indi` v cates substantial or complete exhaustion of filling in-the active shuttle. The arm 15, the spring 16, the arm 17 pivoted at 18 and o having a finger 19 and the connection of the arm 17 with the dog 12-as at 20, may all be `as usual, and since such parts and their operative relation are well understood by those skilled in the art, further elucidation herein is unnecessary.
One of the purposes of the present invention, as hereinbefore indicated, is to part' the new filling end at such point that the portion thereof which extends-from the securing means for the end, cannotbe engaged by any of the operating parts and be carried into the shed. To this end,-it is within the contemplation of the invention that the parting means for the new lling endv shall part such filling end after a filling replenishing operation at a point nearer to the securing means for said end than the distance between the said securing means and the lay or shuttle-box. Under these yconditions, it will be' apparent that the end whichis held by the securing means after the new- .filling has been parted, cannot reach any of the operating parts, and consequently, danger of its being carried into the shed is entirely overcome. The part of the new filling between the cloth selvage and the point at which it has been parted, as hereinbefore noted',` is subjected to the action of a controlling means such that as soon as the new A filling has been parted at the point designated, the loose end leading from the cloth selvage is at once drawn away from the operating parts of the loom and when such `loose'end is parted from the cloth selvage, it is bodily carried outl ofthe loom, or away from all danger of beingenga'ged and car-A ried into -the shed. v

In carrying this feature of the invention into effect, the hopper stand or'bracket 3 is 70 provided with a guideway 21 extending from the front toward the rear portion of the hopper stand, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, and in said guideway 21 there is mounted the parter operating member shown herein as a rod 22 Figs. v2 and 3 extending toward the rear of the loom in the guideway 21 and having'secured to or formed as part',l of its rear end portion, a parting or cutting memf ber 23, Figs. 1 and 4. `This parting or cut- 80 ting member 23 is preferably slotted, as at 24, Fig. 3, to straddle the stationary part-Y ingor cutting member 25 Figs. 1 and 3 when the .cutting member 23 performs its parting stroke, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
' The'stationary member 25 of the parter is'preferably formedA as a lplate secured by appropriate means such as the screws 26 in l. a' recess or cut-away portion of the hopper 90 stand 3, Vsubstantially as indicated in Fig. 3, the construction being such that when the panting or cutting member 23 moves to the front from the position indicated in Fig. 1v, the stationary member 25 will enter the slot 95 24 of the member 23 and the new filling end a will be parted,V as will readily be apparent from Fig. 1.
Extending downwardly from the rod 22 isA a head 27, Figs. 1 and 4, having a facing 100 28 of yielding material, such as leather, rubber, or the like, to be engaged by a bunter 29 carried by 4the lay. The head 27 is normally under the influence of a spring 30 which tends to move the rod 22 and its at- 105 tached parting member 23 rearwardly, when said rod and parting member are free to movement. This spring 30 may preferably be seated in a recess 3l formed in the hopper stand, one end of said spring being seated upon a wall at theend of the recess 31 andL the other end of'the spring against the head 27, substantially as indicated in Fig. 1, the construction being such that the spring 30 normally acts upon the head 27 to project it 115 andthe connected rod 22 and the parting member 23 toward the rear of the loom.
The rod 22 is provided with a notch 32 near its outer end, ,adapted to be engaged by a latch 33 pivoted at 34 Fig. 2 to the 120 base portion 4 of the hopper stand, a spring 35 .normally acting upon the latch 33 to move it into engagement withthe notch in the ,Jrod 22, the construction being such that when the rod 22 ismoved toward the front, 125 of the loom and the movable member 23 of the parting device is moved toward and into coperative relation with -the fixed member 25 thereof, the latch 33l will drop into the recess 32 of the rod 22 and thereafter main- 130 tain the rod and its attached movable member 23 toward the front of the loom.
The condition of parts described is that which4 they maintain during the normal operation of the loom, that is, while a sufficient supply of filling is present for weaving purposes; and it will be noted that the fixed and movable members of the parter are then in closed relation, substantially as indicated in Fig. 3. lVhen, however, a call forfilling replenishment is made, it is thespurpose of the present invention that the fixed and movable members of the parter shall be rela-` tively moved into the position substantially.
as indicated in Fig. 1; and as a convenient means to this end, there is mounted upon 'the transverse shaft 14, a rocker arm 36, the upper portion of which is provided with a lifting cam 37 normally positioned -below the end 38 of the latch 33, the construction being such that when the transverse shaft 14 is rocked contraclockwise, viewing Fig. 1, upon call for filling replenishment, the lifting cam 37 will lift the end 38 of the latch 33 and free the rod 22 to the action of the spring 30, whereupon the latter will move the rod and its attached movable parting member 23 to the rear into substantially the position indicated in Fig. 1.
The extreme front end portion of the rod 22 is provided lwith an incline v39, Fig. 3, so vthat upon frontward movement of the rod 22 after the replenishing operation and the new filling'has beenparted, such incline portion 39 will lift theend 38 of the latch 33 until the arrival of the notch 32 beneath the latch, whereupon the latter will drop into its locking position, substantially as hereinbefore described, it being understood, of course, that the rocker arm 36 at suc-h time will have moved clockwise again tov carry the low part of the cam-37 beneath the end 38 of the latch, therebypermitting the above control of parts.
In order that the latch 33 may be `properly guided and steadied in its movements,
under the' action of the spring 35, and the cam 37, it is embraced by the two steadying posts 40, Figs. 1 and 2, which maybe appropriately secured to =the base port1on of the hopper stand, as 'by screws or other means 41. f

In effectively carrying out this 'feature of the invention, the ends of the fill-ings leading from the carriers 9 which are mounted in the rotary hopper 10, are secured to appropriate securing means to hold this end Y of the filling as the shuttle is picked after Y the replenishing operation andthe part'4 ing mechanism is located with respect thereto so that after its action, the end of the filling held by the securing means cannot reach the operative parts of the loom, which would endanger its being carried into the shed. From 'the construction described, it will be noted that upon call for filling replenishment, the rocker arm 36 will be moved contraclockwise into the position indicated in Fig. 1, and Willlift the latch 33 from' locking engagement with the rod 22, whereupon the latter, under the action of the spring 30, will be moved rearwardly, thereby separating the fixed and movable members of the thread parter into the positionl indicated in Fig. 1. After the replenishing operation, thelay moves backward and the shuttle is picked to the opposite box, whereupon the/end of the new filling leading from the securing means or pins 42 and under the hopper stand, will bel drawn into the space between the fixed and movable mem- .bers of the 'thread parter, and upon the next forward or beatup movement of the lay, the head 27 secured to the rod 22 will be moved by the bunter 29; frontwardly,

In the present instance of the invention, the filling'parting means isillustrated adjacent the buttV ends of the filling carriers in the hopper, and such disposition of the parting means and securing means has been found in practice to be well adapted to the intended purpose, but it is to be understood, of course, that thisA location of the parting -means and securing means is not essential. and they may be otherwise dis osed relative to the filling carriers, as wil belearly obvious to those skilled in the art.
