AUTOMATIC FII LING-REPLENISHING LOOM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
Application filed June 23, 1919. Serial No. 305,984.
' an automatic filling replenishing loom with a bobbin chute of improved construction and arrangement whereby the picker stick is permitted to be operated in its slot with a len h of throw which is much greater than is o tainable with the ordinary construction of automatic filling re 'lenishing loom.
A further object o the invention is to provide an automatic filling replenishing loom with a bobbin chute which is mounted, on the lay and which is tipped into an operative position under the bobbin at predetermined times. To these ends the automatic filling replenishing loom is provided with a bobbin chute whose upper portion is pivoted to the lower and which is normally held in an inoperative position entirely out of thepath of travel of the picker stick, whereby a much longer throw thereof is obtainable than is possible with the ordinary construction. Provision is also made for automatically and positively swinging the upper portion of the bobbin chute back into an operative position at the time when the weft replenishing mechanism operates to eject the exhausted bobbin, so thatv as the latter falls from the shuttle it is properly deflected and guided down out of the way. The swinging ortion of the bobbin chute is also provide with a beveled end or outer side edge so that if by any chance the bobbin chute should remain in its inclined position across the picker stick slot, it will be forced therefrom and into an inoperative position b the engagement of the picker stick itsel \with the beveled end, so that under all conditions the extended throw of the picker stick will be uninterrupted.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing objects and such other objects as may appear, the nvention consists in the structure hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure l is a perspective ofaportion of an automatic loom, showing the improved bobbin chute construction; Fig; 2 is a front elevation of the. same, and Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 viewed in the direction of the arrows.
The automatic loom may be of any usual or preferred construction, and is provided with the usual weft replenishing mechanism and associated parts. In the drawing all the details of the weft replenishing mechanism are omitted with the exception of the rock shaft 10 extending across the front of the loom frame and which is rocked upon the indication of critical exhaustion of the filling in the filling carrier of the active shuttle, and upon the completion of the next beat up of the lay, the replenishing operation takes place.
The lay 12 is provided with the usual opening or slot 13 in which the picker stick 14 is thrown back and forth as it forces the shuttle 15 across the loom in the weaving operation. The slot 13 is provided with a guide 16 and to which is secured the bobbin chute 17. The bobbin chute 17 consists of two parts: a lower part 18 which is formed integrally with the picker stick guide and forms part of the lay and an upper part 19 pivoted to the lower part 18 upon the pintle 20 and which is adapted to swing about its pivot from an inoperative position as shown in full lines in Fig. 3 into an operative position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. A coil spring 21 serves to yieldingly hold the upper portion 19 of the bobbin chute in its inoperative position. It is to be observed that the upper portion 19 of the bobbin chute is movable to and from a position across the picker stick slot 13, so that when in its inoperative position it leaves a free and unobstructed path for the picker stick 14 to be thrown up to the inner side of the bobbin chute, whereby an increased amount of power can be transmitted to the shuttle in order to force the same across wide fabrics, or even when weaving relativel narrow fabrics an increase in speed 0 the shuttle can be obtained. The
23, 24;. The upper portion 23 has a lateral ear 25 extended inwardly therefrom and which is adapted to cooperate with an arm 26 mounted on the rock shaft l'and made fast thereon by the set screw 27. The arm 26 is provided with a beveled face 28 for a purpose to be described. When replenishment is indicated, the rock shaft 10 is turned in a clockwise direction viewing Fig. 3. This raises the arm 26 from the full line to dotted line position. The lay then beats forward upon its replenishing beat-up and the ear 25 comes into engagement with the lower portion of the beveled face 28 of the arm 26, and continues to ride up over the face as the lay continues to beat forward. By the time the lay has reached the end of its forward beat, the ear 25 has moved up onto the substantially horizontal upper side of the arm 26. -The movement of the ear 25 up over the face 28 of the arm 26 causes the upper portion 18 of the bobbin chute to be gradually tilted or swung from its normally inoperative position into an operative position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, so that when the lay arrives at the end of its replenishing beat-up, the tip of the upper portion. 18 of the bobbin chute is in such a position as to just contact with the lay. At this time the replenishing operation takes place and the exhausted bobbin or filling carrier is ejected from the shuttle and falls downwardly striking the upper portion 18 of the bobbin chute by which it is guided into a receptacle.
The lay then starts to beat backward, and the weft replenishing mechanism operates to turn the shaft 10 in an anticlockwise direction (see Fig. 3) whereupon the arm 26 is returned to its initial full line position and allows the upper portion 19 of the bobbin chute to be returned by means of the spring21 to its inoperative position. The shuttle is then picked across the lay in the usual manner by the picker stick 14 which operates in a free and unobstructed path.
The coil spring 21 is designed to return the upper portion 19 of the bobbin chute immediately to its "ino erative position. If, however, the spring s ould be broken, or becomes worn out, further provision is made for returning the bobbin chute to its inoperative position, and to this end the outer side .edge of the upper portion 19 of the bobbin chute 1s beveled, so that should the same remain in an operative position across the path of the picker stick 14 it will be forced therefrom by the engagement of the picker stick 14 with the beveled side edge, so that the travel of the picker stick will not be interrupted at this particular time. Of course where suitable opportunity is presented. the loom will be stopped so that the broken or otherwise defective spring 21 may be repaired.
The important feature of the invention resides in the provision of such construction of a bobbin chute that the throw of the picker stick may not be limited in any way by any portion of the bobbin chute con- SUluCtlOIl.
In the present instance I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the invention. but it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact structure disclosed.
I claim- 1. in automatic loom having, in combination. a bobbin chute mounted on the lay and adapted to be moved into and out of an operative position across the picker stick slot. means cooperating with the bobbin chute to move it into and hold it in its iiioperative position out of the path of travel of the picker stick. and means to move the bobbin chute into its operative position and to hold it there during the replenishing operation.

4. An automatic loom having, in combination. weft replenishing mechanism, a lay, a
bobbin chute pivoted to the lay and adapted to be moved into and out of an operative position across the picker stick slot, means cooperating with the bobbin chute to move the same out of its operative position, and means operated by the Weft replenishing mechanism for moving the bobbin chute into its operative position and holding it there during the replenishing operation, said means including means adapted to be moved into a position to engage the bobbin chute as the lay moves forward on its replenishing beat-up to tilt the same into its operative position.
5. An automatic loom having in combination, Weft replenishing mechanism including a rock shaft, a lay, a bobbin chute mounted thereon movable into and out of an operative position, means cooperating with the bobbin chute to move it out of its operative position, and means actuated by the rock shaft to move the bobbin chute into its operative position and to hold it there durin the replenishing operation.
6. r n automatic loom having, in comblnation, Weft replenishing mechanism, a picker stick, a lay, a bobbin chute mounted on the lay movable into and out of an operative position across the path of the picker stick and provided with a beveled outer side edge adapted to be engaged by the picker stick andto be forced thereby out of its operative position, and means to move the bobbin chute into its operative position When replenishment is indicated and to hold it there during the replenishment operation.
