To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDWARD S. STIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an improvement in Filling-Parters, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
The invention' to be hereinafter described relates to filling parters for parting or severing the filling between the cloth selvage and shuttle at desired times.
In filling replenishing looms of the feeler type wherein the filling is replenished prior to the complete exhaustion of that in the active shuttle, it is customary to part the old filling leading from the filling carrier to be abandoned. rlhis is important in filling replenishment looms because should the old filling not be parted it is liable to be carried into the shed and cause imperfect cloth to be woven on a subsequent pick of the shuttle after replenishment. To more effectively prevent this defective action it has been common also to provide a combined filling parter and filling clamp, and
' to move the parter and clamp from an 1n-l operative position at the front of the loom rearwardly to an operative position, and after the parting and clamping action to then return the partei* and clamp to its inoperative or front position to thereby hold the end of the parted filling that it may be engaged by the temple thread cutter close to the selvage and severed at this point.
Whatever be the form of filling partei and Whether it be associated with afilling clamp, it is of importance that when the filling is to be` changed the old filling shall he uncrringl severed at a point near the shuttle. This of course can be done provided the filling be placed between the parting members of the parter, and in case a filling clamp is employed, also between the clamping members of the clamp.
)in important feature of the present invention therefore consists in providing a filling catcher which will catch the-,old lling when it is to be parted and carry it between the parting and clamping members prior to the action of said members. ln the practical development of thisfeature of the invention the filling catcher is movable with Specification of Letters Patent.

the filling partei', and when the filling parter is moved rearwardly to operative position on call for filling replenishment, the filling catcher is also positioned at one side of the filling and upon further frontward movement of the lay, is actuated to catch and move the filling between the parting members of the partei.
Where the parter is combined with a filling clamp as is now commonly the case, it is more convenient to mount the filling catcher between the parting and clamping members so that it may unerringly place the filling in position to be parted and clamped by these elements. Where the parter and clamp are associated, it is likewise desirable to cause the parter and clamp to move toward the cloth selvage as they are returned to front or inoperative position so as to provide suflicient slack in the filling extended between the cloth selvage and clamp. This has heretofore been effected as in the patent to Draper No. 683,423 dated September 241th, 1901, but an important feature of the present invent-ion consists insimplifying and rendering more effective the movement of the filling partei` and clamp toward the cloth selvage when they are returned to front or inoperative position.
Various other features of the invention in addition to those above noted will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings which show one good practical form or embodiment of'the invention and then the various features of the invention will be definitely defined by the claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a sectional elevation through a portion of the lay and at one side of the parting means, showingthe filling parter and associated parts in operative position and the lay approaching its forward limit of movement.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to that of Fig. 1 with the omission of certain parts, showing the relation of parts as the lay reaches front position.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the parter and its associated parts in inoperative or front position.
Fig. 4 is a detached perspective detail showing the particulars of the means for moving the partei' and clamp toward the selvage of the cloth as they are moved to front or inoperative position.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to that of Fig. t but showing the parts in another position.
Fig. 6 is a plan View showing the general relation of the partei', clamp, catcher, temple and temple thread cutter and shuttle as the lay moves frontwardly upon call for filling replenishment, the dotted lines illustrating the position,l taken by the front portion of the partei' and its carrier when they are moved to inoperative front position and toward the cloth selvage.
Fig. 7 is an under side perspective show- -ing the partei', filling clamp and filling catcher in associated position detached from other parts.
lThe filling catcher for catching and moving the filling between the members of the parter. may be associated with any kind or construction of filling parting means, and if desired a filling clamp may be employed in connection with the partei' to clamp the ends of the filling leading from the. cloth selvage. The purpose of the filling catcher in any event is to engage or catch the filling and carry it' between the filling' parting members before the latter perform their parting functions.
In the present instance of the invention the. loom frame 1 has a'djustably mounted thereon the bracket 2 by means of the slots 3 and bolts e, as indicated in Figs. l and 3. Extending rearwardly from the bracket 2 is a bracket arm 5 to which is nivotallvmounted at 6 the parter carrier r, which in the present form of the invention constitutes also the shuttle feeler. Projecting from the carrier 7 is a pin 8 adapted to be engaged by an arm connected to the change or transverse Shaft to normally hold the carrier or shuttle feeler 7 in its frontI or inoperative position, all substantially as more fully illustrated and described in the patent to Draper hereinbefore mentioned.
The uppei` portion of carrier or shuttle feeler 7, in the present instance of the invention, carries the parting and clamping members of the parter and clamp. Referring more particularly to F ig. 7 the filling partei' comprises a relatively fixed parting member 9 and a relatively movable baiting member 10', which on relative approach cause the filling which may be placed between them to be parted. In the illustrated form of the invention the parter has also connected thereto a filling clamp. rlhis may be of any desired character but as shown in the present illustration of the invention it comprises a fixed lower member l1 and a movable member l2, preferably mounted for movement sinniltaneously with the movable member l() of the filling partei'. if desired the relatively fixed member 9 ofthe partei' may have a hardened plate i3 secured thereto., and the movable member l0 of the partei' and l2 of the clamp may be mounted raeaeeo upon a stud let for movement in unison. In order to effect this conjoint movement of the members l0 and l2. the member l() has the down-turn portion 15 to which is secured the 'tail piece 16, and a pin 1T is passed through the front portion of both the members l0 and 12 and preferably also through the tail piece 16, the construction being such that should either the tail piece 16 or the pin 1T be moved upwardly or downwardly the two members 10 and 12 of the parter and .clamp respectively will be moved relative t0 their fixed members 9 and 11. These features of the invention may if desired be similar in construction and arrangement to those illust-rated and described in the Draper patent mentioned, but as will hereinafter be more fully set forth it is preferable to separate the filling. partei' and filling clamp in order that the filling catcher, to bc presentl)1 dcscribed, may be located between them to more effectively perform its function of moving the filling positively between the members of the partei' and clamp.
As is usual in this class of devices. the filling partei' and clamp are moved from the inoperative or front position, Fig. 3, on call for filling replenishment and assumo their operative or rearward position as indicated in Fig. l. The mean`l for effecting this movement may be of any general character, or such as pointed out in the patent to Draper hereinbefore referred to. On frontward movement of the lay when the parter and clamp are in operative position, the downturned end portion l5 or the tail piece 1G of thc partcr may be met by a suitable bunter 1S, Figs. l and Q to effect movement of the parting and clamping members to part and clamp the filling. and these members will remain in such parting and clamping position, when the paitcr and clamp are returned to front or inoperative position. rasaaeo Extending upwardly from rthe carrier or shuttle feeler 7 is a projection or lug 23, to which is pivotally mounted at 24 a filling catcher 25, the end 26 of which extends beyond the rear end portion of the shuttle feeler and parting and clamping members for a purpose that will presently appear. The filling catcher 25 may be variously formed but in the present instance of the invention it comprises a flat metallic arm of light structure and below its portion 26 is provided with a hook 27, adapted to engage the filling to be parted and carry it or move it positively between the parting and clamping members. Extending from the pivoted part 24 of the filling catcher 25 is a stop arm 28, the end of which is adapted to normally rest upon the stop or shoulder 29 formed or secured to the lug 23. A spring 30, Fig. 7 has one end secured to the stop arm 28 and the other to a pin 31 Figs. 1 and 2 projecting from the lug 23 and said spring normally acts to hold the stop arm 28 in contact with the stop or shoulder 29.
The filling catcher 25 is preferably located between the filling parter and filling clamp that it may engage the filling at a point be,- tween the .parter and clamp, and as a convenient means to effect this relation, the lug 23 which extends upwardly from the carrier or shuttle feeler 7 is located between the parter and clamp as clearly indicated in Fig. 6.
YVhen the filling is to be replenished, the carrier or feeler 7 is moved from its front to its rear o'r operative posit-ion. as usual, and as the lay 31x moves frontward, the projecting end portion 26 of the fillingV catcher is met by the back wall of the shuttle-box or part extending therefrom before the downturned portion 15 or tail 16 of the parting and clamping members is met by the bunter 18, the effect being that the filling catcher 25 is caused to move about its pivotal mounting 24 and catch the filling by thel hook 27 on the lower end thereof and then positively move the filling frontwardly between the parting and clamping members substantially as indicated in Fig. 2. The back wall ofv the shuttle-box is preferably provided with the wear plate 32 to receive the impact of the end portion 26 of the filling catcher as the lay beats up.
1n order that the filling catcher 25 may, in its movement as hereinbefore described, carry the filling between members of the parter and clamp, the relatively fixed members 9 and 11 of the parter and clamp are separated by an opening or recess 33, Fig. 7 so that the hook end l27 of the filling catcher may pass well frontward of the rear active portions of the parting and clamping members. The filling catcher 25 may, if desired be guided in its pivotal movement about the axis 24 by the side portion of the catcher riding along the face of the flange 34. This may serve to steady the action of the catcher when struck by the advancing back wall of the shuttle-box.
Then the filling catcher 25 has thus passed the filling positively between the parting and clamping members, the down extension 15 or tail 16 of the parting and clamping members meets the advancing bunter 18 as indicated in Fig. 2 and the parter and clamp are operated to part and clamp the end of the filling now positively held 'between the parting and clamping members. As the lay moves back the spring 30 restores the filling catcher 25 to its normal position.
From the construction described it will be noted that after the filling is parted, the end of the filling leading from the cloth selvage is held by the clamp and as the carrier or shuttle-feeler 7 is returned to front or inoperative position, it should be moved somewhat toward the cloth selvage to prevent undue strain or breakage of the filling end held by the clamp. To this end the pivotal support for the carrier or shuttlefeeler 7 is formed as an elongated stud 35, Figs. 4 and 5 having a washer 36 secured to the outer end thereof by suitable securing means such as nut 37, Figs. 4 and 5. Mounted upon the stud 35 is the sleeve 38 which is formed integral with or secured to the carrier or shuttle-feeler 7. The sleeve 38 is shorter than the distance between the bracket arm and the Washer 36 so that the carrier or shuttle-feeler 7 and its sleeve 38 may move longitudinally on the .stud 35 from the position indicated in Fig. 4to that indicated in Fig. 5, when the carrier 7 or shuttle-feeler, and perforce the filling partei' and filling clamp, are moved from their operative to their front or'inoperative position.
The sleeve 38 is provided with aninclined cam groove 39 which is conveniently formed by means of two lugs 40 and 41 extending from the sleeve 38. The bracket arm 5 has extending upwardly therefrom a. projecting arm 42 through which extends a pin 43, the end of which engages the inclined groove 39 of sleeve 38, the construction being such that when the carrier or shuttle-feeler 7 and its sleeve 38 are moved to place the parter V movable with the parter toand from operative position, and extending rearwardly relative thereto to be struck by the back wall of the shuttle-box and moved downwardly^ and rontwardly thereby to positively carry the lling frontwardly between the parting members.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a filling parter, a carrier or shuttle-feeler for moving the parter to operative position on call for filling replenishment, a filling catcher pivotally connected to the carrier or feeler and having an operating end portion to engage a wall of' the shuttle-box as the lay beats up and turn the filling catcher downwardly and frontwardly to positively edect introduction of the filling between the open parting members, and means for operating the parting members.
4. ln a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a filling parter and a filling clamp, a carrier for moving the parter and clamp to operative position on call for replenishment, a filling catcher mounted between the parter and clamp and movable between said parts as the lay beats up to introduce the filling between the members of the parter and clamp, and means for operating the parter and clamp.
5. ln a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a filling parter and a filling clamp, a carrier for moving them to and from operative position, a filling catcher pivotallv mounted to swing in a plane passing between the parter and clamp to positively carry the filling between the members of both parter and clamp, an operating part carried by the catcher for causing it to swing in said plane as the lay beats up, and means for operating the parter and clamp.
6. A filling parter for lling replenishing looms, comprising parting members and clamping members spaced apart, a filling catcher pivotally mounted to swing downnaeaafeo wardly and frontwardly in a plane passing between said parter and clamp to carry the lling between the parter and clamp as the lay beats up, means for operating the parter and clamp, and means for swinging the filling catcher to initial position after the l parter and clamp have been operated.
7. ln a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a carrier, a filling parter car` ried thereby for movement to and from operative position, a lug projecting upwardly from the carrier, a filling catcher pivotally 'supported by said lug and having a hooked -to and from operati-ve position, a thread catcher having a hook and pivotally mounted on the carrier above the parter to swing the hook downwardly and frontwardly to positively engage and introduce the filling between the members of the thread parter, and means for swinging the catcher as the lay beats up.
9. A. filling parter for replenishing looms, comprising parting members, a carrier for moving the parting members to and from operative position, a finger having a hook and an actuating portion to engage a wall of the shuttle-box and to be turned thereby in a downward and frontward direction relative to the parter to carry the filling between the parting members, a spring normally acting to hold the hooked finger in one position, and a stop acting upon a portion of the finger.
10. ln a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a filling parter, a carrier for said parter having a hub or sleeve provided with a cam groove inclined to the axis of the hub or sleeve, a bracket secured to the loom frame, a pin supporting arm on the bracket, and a pin extending through the pin supporting arm and engaging the inclined guideway in the hub or sleeve.
