THREAD CUTTER FOR SHUTTLES Filed Feb. 21, 1951 Jv l/EN TOR L75 CAP? 'In'weft replenishing looms there remains at the time of transfer a thread end which extends from the outgoing bobbin through the delivery eye and along the front wallof the shuttle to the adjacent selvage. It isdesirable to remove this end prior to the succeeding pick of the shuttle in order to prevent the same from beingwhipped'into the shed. Severing the Weft is a part of theoperation necessary to accomplish this result. It is an important object of my present invention to provide a shuttle with a delivery eye so formed that it will coact with a normally inoperative device at the time of transfer to force the weft issuingfrom the eye against a portion of the device to part the weft.
It is a further object of my present invention to provide a resiliently mounted weft parting device whichshall have a rounded rear end movable into engaging relation with those portions of the delivery eye over which the weft normally extends when the shuttle is boxedfor transfer. The rounded end'is preferably spherical, but whatever its form, it is so shaped as to conform to a portion at least of the delivery eye. Means are also provided to permit the rounded or spherical surface to move both vertically and horizontally throughout a restricted zone of motion for the purpose of coacting with the shuttle even though the latter be slightly misplaced.
With these and other objects in view which will'appear as the description proceeds, my inventionresides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims;
In the accompanying drawing, wherein a convenient embodiment of my invention is set forth,
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a shuttle and weft parter made according to my present invention, parts of the shuttle being shown in section,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged horlzontal section through the member which is in dependentof the shuttle and normally placed out of en'- gaging position with the latter, and
Fig. 31s a front elevation of the shuttle.
Referring to the drawing, I have shown a" shuttle S having a weftcham-ber in which the weft carrier 11'is normally mounted. The weft W extends from the carrier into a thread passage '12 and may be led around a guide post 13 toward adelivery eye 14. The latter may be formed substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and'may have atubular body 15 with a thread opening 16 at the top thereof as shown in Fig. 3.. The eye is made of hard material, preferably metal, and has a tubular bore with which, as indicated at 17 in Fig 1, may be formed to assist in parting'th'e weft. The.
surfacel'? maybe either acutting edge or aslightly rounded surface.
A lever 20may be mounted tomove about a surfaces or edges the head and the'tube'may be used to give a finer setting. A hammerhead 28 has a,
rounded preferably spherical rear end 29 which is proportioned to coact with the sur-' face 17 of the'delivery eye. 'The forward end of the head may have a flange 30 which en gages the end wall 31 of the tube 26 to limit rearward movement of thehammer. A com-' pression spring 32 is located between the thread head 25 and the fl'angeBO and tends normally to hold the hammer head in rear position but permits the latter to assumethe dotted line positions shown in Fig. 2.
In operation, the transferrer arm'22 holds the lever and hammer head28 in forward position against the action of spring 23 so that as the shuttle moves forwardly on the lay L the delivery eye will not engage the spherical end 29 of the hammer. At the time of transfer, however,
the arm 22 moves forwardly to permit spring 231:0 move the hammer head rearwardly and the rounded end 29 of the latter-will thereupon be brought into the path of movement of the delivery eye. Further advance "movement of the lay will i effect engagement between the edge 17 and the. surface 29 with resultant parting-of the weft. shuttlelthe weft end move out of the eye and there will be no thread in the'shuttle eye.
While I have shown the edge 17 as'being circular and formed aspart of the sidede livery eye, yet in its broader significance my invention contemplatestheuse of a surface on the shuttle across which the weft extends I so shaped as tocoact with the. rounded ham- 7 mer for the purpose of parting the weft when the hammer forces the weft against its circular or. areuate surface. l 1
In, the ordinary running of a loom the shuttle will notalways be boxed in exactly the same position and in order that the part- J er mayoperate with theshuttle when slightly .displaced'the yielding, mounting set forth herein 1S employed. As shownin full lines in Fig. 2the hammerhead is atrest with the V 1 spring 32 fully expanded. Should the shuttle'be'to the right or left of its normal position,;however, the rounded surface of the head will cam the latter so that-it will assume I one or the-,oth'er'of the dotted line positions shownin Fig. 2. In view of the fact that the surface 29-is spherical .the movement from the full to the dotted line positions will not affect materially the relation between the weft parting surfaces." i From the foregoingitwill be seen that I have provided a simple form of thread parter wherein a rounded member is broughtinto contact with a second member which is concavegand provideduwithf asurface to coact with a rounded member, one of said members being mounted on the shuttle and so disposed that the weft'extends thereacross when the shuttle isinreplenishingposition. A convenient embodimentof this principle contemplates the use of the side delivery eye as the concave member. It will furtherbe seen that the member which is mounted independently of. the shuttle is adapted for universal movement and-that the relation of the contacting surfaces of the members is not materially changed by slight displacements -of .the shuttle. It will also be seen that the spring 32 will permit yielding of the hammer head after the two weft parting members engage and during subsequent forward movement of the lay. Variations in the force exerted by the spring32 may be obtained by changing the relative position of the tube 26 and the head. 25.
Having thus described my invention it will be seen that changes and modifications As the exhausted, bobbin leaves the.
thereof will be free to may be made therein by thoseskilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope limited to what I claim is:
