8` Claims. .(,CL 139.-263) y This invention pertains to automatic Yfilling replenishing looms and .more particularly relates to mechanisms for parting the incoming filling ends of such looms.
Looms of the type above referred to commonly include a reciprocating lay with a `shuttle box at the replenishing end thereof,llling replenishing mechanism including a magazine containing a plurality of reserve iilling carriers and a filling end holder to which the lling ends of the reserve carriers are attached, mechanism such as a temple thread cutter ,for parting the filling ends adjacent the cloth selvage and mechanism for parting the filling attached to the outgoing lling carrier. In addition, such looms may include mechanism for removing from the loom loose pieces of lling ends.
The filling replenishing mechanism in its operation incidentally forms an incoming filling end extending from the cloth selvage to the filling f end holder and an outgoing filling end extending from the cloth selvage to the parting and clamping mechanism which operates at the time of transfer to clamp and sever theoutgoing fill-F ing end from the exhausted filling carrier.
Upon severance of the outgoing and incoming filling ends at the cloth selvage, the :outgoing lling end is free to fall downwardly awaygfrom the lay, or may be completely removed from the :loom by the thread remover if one is provi,ded."3
The A,incoming filling end is still attached tothe filling endholder and may become entangledin themoving lpartsof the loom or, ifa thread remover is provided, cannot'be completely removed from the loom bythe thread remover until -it vis parted from the lling end holder.
It is essential for the vproper operation of the loom that the incoming filling end remain attached to the filling end holder for aY plurality of picks after the operation of the replenishing mechanism. Prior to the present invention,.re'
`lease of these ends from the filling end holder has been accomplished manually. In sofar as I amaware no means have ever been provided `heretofore for parting the incomlnglling end -1 adjacent the magazine after it has been'v formed by the operation of the replenishing mechanism.
Accordingly, it is a v,principal object of this invention to provide an automaticjlling replenishing loom including replenishing mechanism comprising a magazine'containing ra reservel filling' carrier, a lling end Yholder toY which the filling end ofthe reserve carrier isvattaohed, a

Serial No. 331,844 filed April 26, 1940, now B atent iixed to stub shaft 6 and carrying a conduit l1, and a reciprocating rod |8 pivotally attached to the lay beam as at |9 for feeding the loose filling ends into and along the conduit, all as more fully described in the above referred to co-pending application of Carl D. Brown et al.
The parting and clamping mechanism for parting the outgoing lling end adjacent the shuttle may be similar to that described and claimed in the patent to Northrop No. 2,028,560 granted January 21, 1936, and may comprise parting and clamping blades 2i) mounted on a carrier 2| which reciprocates in a guide member 22 mounted on a bracket 23 attached to the stub shaft E. Means are provided for opening and closing the parting and clamping blades including a blade operating member 24 and a pivoted cam 25 mounted on a bracket 26 and means are. provided for moving the carrier and the parting and clamping blades toward and from the shuttle box, including a pin 2l mounted on carrier 2| and engaging a swinging bracket 28, all as more fully described in the above referred to patent to Northrop.
A shuttle 29 is shown in the shuttle box 3. Shuttle 29 carrying the filling supply is picked from side to side along the lay beam I by suitable means which may include a picker stick 39. As the shuttle is thus picked, it lays filling thread in the shed S which filling thread is beaten into the fell of the cloth C by the reed 2. When the filling supply in the shuttle is substantially exhausted, a fresh supply is provided by the automatic replenishing mechanism.
The transfer of a bobbin 8 to the shuttle 29 and the subsequent picking of the shuttle results in the formation of a length of lling thread Which extends from the holder lil through the shed S. The subsequent beating in of the portion of this thread Which is in the shed leaves the end f projecting from the cloth selvage to the holder |9. This iilling end is known in the art as the incoming iilling end.
The operation of the replenishing mechanism results in the formation of another filling end f yprojecting from the cloth selvage to the outgoing lor exhausted bobbin in the shuttle and is known as the outgoing filling end. Thus the incoming and outgoing filling ends are formed incidental to the operation of the replenishing mechanism.
The outgoing iilling end j is parted adjacent the shuttle eye at the time of transfer by the parting and clamping blades 29. These blades part and clamp the outgoing iilling end and withdraw it from the shuttle boX.
The outgoing filling end f and the incoming filling end f are severed adjacent the cloth selvage by the temple thread cutter I3 a few picks after transfer. The reciprocating rod I3 of the thread remover catches the outgoing and incoming filling ends after they have been severed by the temple thread cutter and feeds them into and along the conduit Il. Means are provided in the conduit for preventing retrograde movements of the lling ends as the rod |3 moves. Upon release of the outgoing iilling end by the parting and clamping mechanism, the loose piece of outgoing filling is completely fed through the con- I duit and removed from the loom. The incoming iilling end, however, has one end attached to the holder I and cannot be completely fed .through the conduit I1 and removed from the loom until it has been parted from the end holder lIll.

Arm 3| may be formed of a metallic strip or other suitable material bent to an approximately Z shape, as best seen on Fig. 2, with its free end projecting beyond and adjacent the inner edge of the thread guide disc 9. A plate 33 having a V-shaped slot 34 in its rear end is iixedly attached to arm 3i as by rivets 33. Rounded projections 3S and 31 project inwardly from the upper and lower edges respectively of slot 34 and The rounded projections 3B and 3l serve to guide the incoming iilling thread into the slot 34 and to prevent the loom operators nger from getting into the slot. A cuttingblade 3B is i'ixedly attached to plate 33 and positioned so that its lower cutting edge 39 projects slightly below the upper edge of slot 34.' A second cutting blade 40 is xedly attached to plate 33 and positioned so that its upper cutting edge 4| projects slightly above the lower edge of slot 34 all as best seen on Fig. 3.
Since it is essential that the incoming filling end remain attached to the holder lil for at least several picks after transfer it is necessary that the parting mechanism for parting the incoming filling end be so arranged as to part the incoming filling a plurality of picks after transfer'. This result is accomplished`by the mechanism of my invention, for the plate 33 is so located relative to the thread guide disc 9 that immediately after transfer the rotation of the battery to bring the neXt bobbin into transfer position (Which action is part of the replenishing operation) will bring the incoming iilling end fV into the slot 34 where the projections 36 and 3i tend to hold it. While in slot 36 the incoming filling end f is severed either by the vibration of the loom or upon the next operation of the transfer mechanism. Thus it is seen that each newly formed incoming iilling end is parted adjacent the iilling end hold- 45' er at least a plurality of picks after its formation.
Having thus fully described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I claim:
1. In an automatic filling replenishing loom of tlie type incidentally forming incoming and outgoing lling ends, the combination of replenishing mechanism including a rotary battery carrying a plurality of reserve filling carriers, a iilling end holder to which the filling ends of said reserve lling carriers are attached, means for parting said incoming and outgoing iilling ends adjacent the cloth selvage, means for parting the outgoing filling end adjacent theoutgoing filling carrier, and stationary meanscooperating with said rotary battery for parting the incoming filling end between said rotary battery and said filling end holder a plurality of picks aftersaid incoming `iilling end has been formed.

In an automatic replenishing loom of the type incidentally forming incoming filling ends, the combination of a magazine adapted to hold a plurality of reserve iilling carriers, a holder to which the lling ends of said carriers are attached and means for successively parting each incoming filling end between said magazine and said holder a plurality of picks after the formation thereof, said means including a member having a stationary V-shaped opening therein, the
upper and lower edges of said opening forming cutting edges.
6. In an automatic iilling replenishing loom the combination of replenishing mechanism inends of the filling of the reserve carriers are attached, and parting means including a stationary member having a V-shaped opening therein, said means being so constructed and arranged las to successively part each of said lling ends adjacent said holder a plurality of picks after transfer of the filling carrier to which said lling end is attached.

A thread parter for looms of the type including a replenishing mechanism comprising a magazine, a thread guide and a filling end holder, said parter comprising a Z-shaped member having one end flxedly attached to a stationary part of the loom, the free end of said member` extending beyond and adjacent to said thread guide, a plate xedly secured to the free end of said member, said plate having a V-shaped opening therein, and a pair of cutting blades iixed to said plate, one of said blades projecting above the lower edge of said opening and the other of said blades projectingbelow the upper edge of said opening. n Y

In an automatic filling replenishing loom of the type incidently forming incoming and outgoing lling ends, thev combination of means for parting thev incoming and outgoing filling ends adjacent the cloth selvage, means for parting the outgoing filling end adjacent the outgoing filling carrier, stationary means for parting the incoming iilling end at the replenishing mechanism, and means constructed and arranged to cooperate with said parting means to part said incoming iilling end a plurality of picks after formation thereof by moving said filling thread into engagement with said parting means.
