This invention pertains to automatic filling replenishing looms and has more particular reference to thread parting mechanism for parting the incoming filling ends formed bysuch looms.
The usual automatic filling replenishing loom includes a reciprocating lay having a shuttle box at the replenishing end thereof, filling replenishing mechanism including a magazine containing a plurality of reserve filling carriers and providing means for holding the filling ends of the reserve carriers, mechanism for severing the filling ends adjacent the cloth selvage such as a temple thread cutter, and mechanism for clamping and parting the outgoing filling end adjacent theshuttle. In addition such looms may be provided witha-thread remover, either mechanical or pneumatic forremoving loose pieces of filling ends from the loom. Operation of the replenishing mechanism incidentally results in the formation of an incoming filling end extending from the cloth selvage to the fillingend holder and an out-going filling end extending from the cloth selvage to the parting and clamping mechanism, which mechanism operates at the time of transfer to clamp and sever the outgoingfilling end from the exhausted filling carrier.

Accordingly it is a principal object of this invention to provide automatic filling replenishing loom including'replenishing mechanism comprising a magazine containing a plurality of reserve fillingcarriers, and having a filling end holder to which the filling ends of the reserve carriers are attached, a temple thread cutter, a filling end parting and clamping mechanism, parting mechanism for partingthe incoming filling thread adjacent the filling end holder, and a new and improved operating means therefor whichshall comprise a reciprocating means for actuating the partingmechanism said reciprocating means and said parting mechanism being so constructed and arranged as to efiect parting of each newly formed incoming filling end a plurality of picks after the operation or the replenishing mechanism forming the same.

The drawings show but parts of a loom, the parts and mechanisms not shown being of usual construction and' forming no part of the present invention.
The parts shown include a reciprocating lay beam I having a reed 2 and a shuttle box 3 mounted thereon, a right hand side frame 4 and a breast beam 5 on which is mounted the replenishing mechanism.
The, replenishing. mechanism may be of any usual type; the particular construction shown being of the rotary batterytype; Only a portion of thereplenishing'mechanism is shown, the portion shown including the transferrer ii mounted on transferrer stub shaft 1, magazine 8 holding a plurality of reserve filling carriers or bobbins 9," thread guide discl0; filling end holder H to which are attached the ends of the filling on the bobbins 9 and means for rotating the magazine to successively present each reserve bobbin in transfer position, including ratchet l2 and feed pawl l3.
In addition to the foregoing the loom is shown as equipped with a temple thread cutter or selvage trimming mechanism for parting the incoming and outgoing filling ends adjacent the cloth selvage, a parting and clamping mechanism for parting and clamping the outgoing filling end adjacent the shuttle and a thread remover for removing loose pieces of filling ends formed by the parting mechanisms.
The temple thread cutter or selvage trimming mechanism may be of the usual construction and may comprise a lay operated cutter I4 mounted on the temple l5.
The thread remover may be similar to the thread remover described and claimed in the copending application of Carl D. Brown, Edward C.
Nichols and George F. Belforti, Serial No. 331,844,
filed April 26, 1940, now Patent No. 2,233,373, and may comprise a bracket l6 fixed to stub shaft 1 and carrying a conduit l1, and a reciprocating rod l8 pivotally attached to the lay beam for feeding the loose filling ends into and through the conduit.
The parting and clamping mechanism for parting the outgoing filling end may be similar to that described and claimed in the patent to Northrop No. 2,028,560, granted January 21, 1936, and may comprise parting and clamping blades l9 mounted on a carrier which reciprocates in a guiding member 2| mounted on a bracket 22 attached to the stub shaft 1. Means are provided for opening and closing the parting and clamping blades including a blade operating member 23 and a pivoted cam 24, and means are provided for moving the carrier and the parting and clamping blades toward and from the shuttle box, including a swinging bracket 25 and a pin 26 projecting from the carrier 20, all as more fully described in the above referred to patent to Northrop.
The particular bracket shown for Supporting justably attached to the stub shaft 1, a lower member 28, to which the carrier guide member 2| is attached, adjustably connected .to the upper member 21 by means of a pivoted connection 29 at its forward end and a bolt and slot connection 39 at its rear end.
A shuttle 3| is shown in the shuttle box 3. Shuttle 3| carrying the filling supply is picked from side to side along the lay beam l by suitable means which may include a picker stick 32. As the shuttle is thus picked it lays filling thread in the shed S, which filling thread is beaten into the fell of the cloth C by the reed 2. When the filling supply in the shuttle is substantially exhausted, a fresh supply is provided by the automatic replenishing mechanism.
The transfer of a bobbin 9 to the shuttle 3i and the subsequent picking of the shuttle results in the formation of a length of filling thread which extends from the holder ll through the shed S. The subsequent beating in of the portion of this thread which is in the shed leaves the end. 1 projecting from the cloth selvage. This filling end is known in the art as the incoming filling end.
The operation of the replenishing mechanism results in the formation of another filling end I projecting from the cloth selvage. This filling end 1" extends from the cloth selvage to the outgoing or exhausted bobbin in the shuttle and is known as the outgoing filling end. Thus the incoming and outgoing filling ends are formed incidental to the operation of the replenishing mechanism.
The outgoing filling end 1" is parted adjacent the shuttle eye at the time'of transfer by the parting and clamping blades l9. These blades part and clamp the outgoing filling end and withdraw it from the shuttle box.
The outgoing filling end 1" and the incoming filling end 1 are severed adjacent the cloth selvage by the temple thread cutter l4 a few picks after transfer. The reciprocating rod I8 of the thread remover catches the outgoing and incoming filling ends after they have been severed by the temie thread cutter and feeds them into and along the conduit ll. Means are provided in the conduit for preventing retrograde movements of the filling ends as the rod I8 moves. Upon release of the outgoing filling end by the parting and clamping mechanism the loose piece of outgoing filling is completely fed through the conduit I1 and removed from the loom. The incoming filling end, however, has one end attached to the end holder H and cannot be completely fed through the conduit Hand removed from the loom until it has been broken or severed from the end holder I l. v
I provide a thread cutting mechanism for severing the incoming filling end J adjacent the thread holder. Such mechanism may comprise a rod 33 adjustably mounted on the rear end'of the lower member 28 of the bracket supporting the parting and clamping mechanism. A depending bracket 34 is adjustably mounted on the outer end of rod 33 by means of set screw 35.
'Fixedly mounted on bracket 34 by means of bolt 33 is a thread guide member 31. The forward end of member 31 is slotted to receive a pin 3 9 projecting from the bracket 34. The rear end of member 31 is provided With an open ended slot 33 for the reception of the incoming filling end. The open end of slot 39 is V-shaped as at 49, and best seen in Figs. 3 and 4, the inner end of slot 39 forms a circular opening 4| 39 adjacent the V-shaped opening.

Since it is essential that the incoming filling end remain attached to the holder I l for at least three orfour picks after transfer it is necessary that the parting mechanism for parting the incoming filling end be so arranged as to part the incoming filling several picks aftertransfer. This result is accomplished by the mechanism of my invention, for as each reserve bobbin in the maga zine is moved into position for transfer, the filling end extending from the bobbin to the holder is brought into the slot 39 in the guide member 31, the hook 42 prevents the filling end from escaping from the slot. Upon transfer the filling end is moved further into the slot coming to rest in the circular opening M where it is in position to be severed upon the next operation of the transfer mechanism. it is seen that each newly formed incomingfilling is parted by the thread parting mechanism on the next succeeding operation of the replenishing mechanism from that which formed it.
Having thus fully described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I claim:
1. In a filling end parting mechanism for automatic filling replenishing looms of the type incidentally forming incoming and outgoing filling ends, the combination of a support, parting blades mounted thereon in position to engage an incoming filling end, an intermittently reciprocatory element, a cam follower mounted on one of said blades and a cam secured to the intermittently reciprocatory element and constantly engaging said cam follower for intermittently actuating said blades, said cam and said cam follower being constructed and arranged to actuate said blades to part each successive incoming filling end a plurality of picks after formation thereof.

In an automatic filling replenishing loom of the type incidentally forming incoming and outgoing filling ends, the combination of means for parting said filling ends at the cloth selvage, means for parting the outgoing filling end at the shuttle and means actuated by said second named means for parting each incoming filling end at the replenishing mechanism, said last named means being constructed and arranged to part each said incoming filling end a plurality of picks after formation thereof.

In an automatic filling replenishing loom of the type incidentally forming incoming and outgoing filling ends and including means for parting said filling ends at the cloth selvage, the combination of means for parting each outgoing filling end at the shuttle and means actuated by said second named means for parting the incoming filling end at the replenishing mechanism, said last named means being constructed and arranged to part each said incoming filling end a plurality of picks after formation thereof.

In an automatic filling replenishing loom of the type incidentally forming incoming and outgoing filling ends, the combination of means for parting said filling ends 'at the cloth selvage, meansfor parting the outgoing filling end at the shuttle, means actuated by said second named means for parting the incoming filling end at the replenishing mechanism, said last named means being constructed and arranged to part each said incoming filling end a plurality of picks after formation thereof and means for removing from the loom loose pieces of filling ends formed by said parting means.

In a filling end parting mechanism for automatic filling replenishing looms of the type incidentally forming incoming and outgoing filling ends, the combination of a support, parting blades mounted thereon, a guide member having an elongated slot therein with a circular opening at the closed end of said slot for holding said incoming filling ends in position to be parted by said blades, and anintermittently reciprocatory cam member constantly engaginga projection extending from one of said blades for intermittently actuating the same, said member'and said blades being constructed and arranged to effect parting of each successive incoming filling end a plurality of picks after formation thereof.

In a filling end parting mechanism for filling replenishing looms, a support, a pair of par-ting blades mounted thereon, one of said blades be-- ing fixedly mounted on said support, the other of said blades being movable from anopen to-a closed position with a shearing action, a cam follower mounted on said movable blade, a cam member secured to an intermittently reciprocatory element of the loom and constantly engaging said cam follower, whereby said cam member on its rearward movement will move said movable blade to closed position and on its forward movement will move said movable blade to open position.

In a filling end parting mechanism for filling replenishing looms, a support mounted on said loom, a carrier slidably mounted on said support for intermittent movement forwardly and rearwardly of the loom, a cam mounted on said carrier for movement therewith, means for moving said carrier, a pair of parting blades mounted on said support, one of said blades being fixed, the other of said blades being movable from open to closed position, a cam follower mounted on said movable blade and constantly engaging said cam to thereby move said movable blade to closed position on the rearward movement of said cam and move said movable blade to open position on the forward movement of said cam.

In a filling replenishing loom having a magazine for reserve filling carriers and means for transferring successive reserve filling carriers from the magazine to a shuttle, said loom being of the type incidentally forming incoming and outgoing filling ends, means for parting the outgoing filling end at the shuttle and a second parting means located outwardly of and actuated by said first parting means for parting the incoming filling end close to the magazine.

In a filling replenishing loom having a magazine for reserve filling carriers and means for transferring successive filling carriers from the magazine to a shuttle, said loom being of the type incidentall forming incoming and outgoing filling ends, means for parting the outgoing filling end at the shuttle and a second parting means located outwardly of and actuated by said first parting means for parting the incoming filling end at the magazine a plurality of picks after the formation thereof.

In a filling replenishing 100m having a magazine for reserve filling carriers, a means spaced apart from the magazine for holding filling ends extending from said reserve filling carriers, means for transferring successive reserve filling carriers from said magazine to a shuttle and for displacing a used filling carrier from the shuttle, means for parting at the shuttle the filling end extending fromv the used filling carrier, and parting means actuated by said first parting means for parting at said holding means filling ends extending from said reserve filling carriers.

In a filling replenishing loom having a magazine for reserve filling carriers, a holding means spaced apart from said magazine for holding filling ends extending from said reserve filling carrier, means for transferring successive reserve filling carriers to a shuttle and to displace a used filling carrier from the shuttle, means for parting at the shuttle a filling end extending from the selvage to the used filling carrier, and means actuated by said parting means for parting successively the filling ends secured to the said holding means at a point between the magazine and the holding means.
12. In a filling replenishing loom having a magazine for reserve filling carriers, a holding means spaced apart from said magazine for securing the ends of filling extending from said reserve filling carriers, 2. support placed on the loom between said magazine and said holding means, a
parting meansmounted on said support, said parting means having a movable blade with a cam follower mounted thereon, a 'reciprocatory cam engaging said cam follower to actuate said movable'blade, means for guiding a filling end extending from said magazine tosaid holding means and for placing it in engagement with said same, a cammoving with said parting means, a
second parting means mounted on the loom proximate to said first parting means and at a point adjacent said holding means, a cam follower extending from a movable blade on said second parting means and engaging said cam on said first parting means whereby, upon actuation of said first parting means said second parting means is operated to part a filling end secured to said holdin means.
