Be it known that 1, JAMES J. JENNINGS,
a citizen of the United. States, residing at Chicopee, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-Replenishing Looms,
of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings,
is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
ll his invention relates to filling replenishing looms and more particularly to the means for controllin the filling end of the outgoing filling carrier or bobbin.
In so called feeler looms provided with mechanism for replenishing the filling prior to complete exhaustion of the-thread in the running shuttle, it has heretofore been proposed to cut the filling adjacent the shuttle or sever its connection with the outgoing filling carrier or bobbin and to then move the filling end frontwardly into the range of action of a temple thread cutter adjacent the cloth selvage. In mechanism heretofore proposed the piece of filling between the cloth selvage and shuttle has been retained by a holder or catcher and finally released therefrom, so that the pieces of severed filling drop to the under portion of the loom and there accumulate u on the running parts of the loom beneat In these constructions it has been customary for the' loom attendant'to reach down into the lower portion of the loom and remove the filling ends therefrom, an operation dangerous to the loom attendant and inconvenient of accomplishment.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide mechanism whereby the filling between the cloth selvage and the shuttle of the outgoing filling carrier may be severed adjacent the shuttle and also adjacent the cloth selvage and then be held by a thread end holder of novel construction so that the loom attendant may at his pleasure remove the filling ends from the holder which is conveniently situated for this purpose. In accordance with the present invention,v the thread end holder is located between. the cloth selvage and shuttle and comprises jaws having friction material on their opposed faces which engage the filling end between the cloth selva e and shuttle, move it frontwardly after it has been cut adacent the shuttle and subsequently hold an maintain 1923; Serial No. 650,148.

The friction material between the jaws comprises a series of wire-teeth which may be conveniently provided by a piece of card clothing and which serve to hold the filling end, and it may be desirable in some cases to provide the face of the opposing jaw with friction material, such as felt or the like, the result being that when the filling end has been severed adjacent the shuttle and adjacent the cloth salvage, the jaws will efiectively hold the filling end or accumulation of such ends and by retaining them in front position present them in convenient location for removal by the loom attendant.
The various features of the invention and new combination of parts will best be made clear from the following description and the accompanying drawings ofone good form of the invention.

The loom frame 1 has mounted thereon the usual transverse or rock shaft 2 which is supported in bearings 3 secured at opposite sides of the m and by rocking movement of which through the usual feeler show the feeler mechanism at the opposite side of the loom nor many of the details of the filling replenishing mechanism since these may be of usual construction and are now well understood.
The bracket 4 is secured to the loom frame and has a rearwardly extending portion to which is secured the stud or dead shaft 5. Mounted on the stud or dead shaft 5 is the shuttle feeler .6 having a pin 7 which engages the yielding jaws 8 and 9 of a rocking block 10 mounted upon a rear- .wardly extending arm 11 secured to the transverse or rock shaft 2. The block 10 is under the influence of a spring 12 which normally holds the jaw 9 in closed relation with the jaw 8 on the arm 11 to enclose the pin 7 between the relatively movable jaws, the construction being such that should the rock shaft 2 be rocked as indicated by the arrow, Fig. 2, the shuttle 'l'eeler 6 will be moved rearwardly into shuttle feeler detecting position, as indicated in Fig. 1. Projecting upwardly from the bracket 4 is a guidelts in the guiding slot 14 on which the feeler moves, and such guide may be either of the inclined type to cause the shuttle 6 to be moved laterally or from the cloth selvage as it partakes of its feeling function and to be moved laterally towards the cloth selvage as it returns to initial pos tion, or it may be straight, either type of shuttle feeler being of a well-known con struction.
The shuttle feeler 6 has extending therefrom the arm 15 to which is connected the slotted member 16 into the slot of which extends a pin 17 projecting from a lug 18 depending from the usual filling replenishing dog 19. The dog 19 is pivotally connected to the lower extension 20 of the transferrer, and on call for replenishment of filling through the rocking movement of the rock shaft 2 the dog 19 is moved into operative position to be engaged by the usual hunter on the lay as the latter moves frontwardly. The mechanism so far described is or may be of usual construction.
The shuttle feeler 6 is provided with a cutter or thread part er to cut or part the filling adjacent the shuttle on call for re plenishment of filling. In the present instance the cutter comprises a fixed member 21 and a relatively movable cutter member 22 having a tail piece 23 provided with a laterally projecting pin .24 ior opening the cutter as the shuttle ieeler moves into its rearward shuttle-feeling position.
Fixedly mounted on the bracket 4 is the upwardly extending arm 25 on which is mounted the rocking member 26 havin a downwardly extending lug 27. The rockmg member 26 is under the control or a s ring 28 which permits the lug 27 to move rrontwardly when engaged by the pin 24 as the shuttle "leeler moves frontwardly, but is held from rocking movement in the opposite direction by a stop 29, the construction being such that when the feeler 6 moves to its shuttle ieeling position on call for replenishinsane ment of filling the projection 27 acting through the pin 24 will open the feeler thread cutter, and after the feeler thread cutter has received the end of the filling a between its cutting members, the frontward movement of the lay acting through the hunter operates the movable thread cutting member to out the thread, whereupon as the shuttle feeler returns to its frontward initial position, the lug 27 will yield and permit the feeler thread cutter to remain closed. These parts may be of usual; construction, and indeed any form of teeler thread cutter or parter may be employed to cut or part the thread adjacent the shuttle on call for replenishment of filling.
Mounted upon the breast beam of the loom is the temple arm 31 carrying the usual temple 32 which is provided with a temple thread cutter 33 of usual construction and preferably located adjacent thecloth selvage.
The hub portion 34 of the shuttle feeler 6 is provided with a laterally extending sleeve 35 to which is secured by the bolts 36 the upwardly extending support 37 for the thread end holder. The support 37 is preferably made adjustable by forming it in two parts, as shown, and connecting such parts by a bolt 38 which passes through a slot 39 formed in one member, and engages the other member of the arm. By making the supporting arm of the thread end holder adjustable the proper position of the thread end holder may be effected.
Extending rearwardly from the thread end holder support 37 is the lower jaw 40 of the thread end holder, which may be formed integral with the arm 37 or secured thereto. Pivotally mounted on the support 37 at 41 is the upper jaw 42 having a frontwardly extending cam ortion 43 and connected to the frontwar ly extending cam portion 43 is a pin 44, the upper end portion of which may be turned laterally at 45 to engage an opening in the frontwardly extending cam portion 43. The pin 44 extends downwardly and passes through the guide opening in the lug 46 between which and the cam portion 43 is a spring 4? which normally acts to close the jaws.
Secured to the trout portion of the loom is a jaw opener 48 having a rearwardly extending end 49 which overlies the frontwardly extending cam portion 43 oi the upper jaw. in the present instance. the jaw opener is adjustablj' secured to the loom frame by a bolt 50 w ich passes through an opening 51 in the ja opener. whereby the jaw opener may be adjusted towards and from the front of the loom to locate its rear end in proper eo acting relation with the cam portion 43 of the upper jaw.

The upper jaw 42 of the thread end holder is provided on its inner face with a series of wires 52 which may be conveniently formed of a strip of card clothing 53 secured to the surface of the upperjaw. Likewise, the lower jaw 40 of the thread end holder may be provided with friction material 54 which, in the present instance, is shown as a piece of felt secured to the inner surface of the lower jaw, The wire teeth 52 cooperating with the friction material 54 on'the lower jaw, in the present instance, effectively hold and maintain the piece of cut filling which is engaged between the jaws and prevent it from dropping to the loom parts beneath. When an accumulation of cut filling ends have been engaged and held by the thread holding jaws, the loom attendant can readily remove these ends by opening the jaws manually, either by'lifting the rear end portion of the upper jaw or by pressing upon the cam portion 43 of the upper jaw which is then in its front position,

What is claimed is:
1. An automatic filling replenishing loom in which the filling is replenished before com lete exhaustion, having in combination filing cutter in front of the lay adjacent the cloth selvage, athread cutter for'cutting the spent filling adjacent the shuttle, a thread end holder between the cloth selvage and thread cutter comprising two jaws, means for opening the jaws as they move rearwardly on call for replenishment of filling, and acting upon the jaws to maintain them closed when the thread end holder is in frontward position.
2. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of two cutters for cutting the spent filling, one adjacent the cloth selvage and the other adjacent the shuttle-box, means for operating the cutters, a thread end holder bewire teeth, a jaw opener extending from the front of the loom rearwardly for opening the jaws as they move rearwardly and acting to maintain the jaws closed when in front position.
3. In a filling end controller mechanism, a filling) end holder comprising two relatively mova le jaws one of which is rovided with wire teeth to enga e and hol end, a jaw opener 0 open the jaws to receive the fil ing end and acting upon the 'aws when closed to maintain them closed to old the filling end between the jaws.
4. In a'filling end controller mecha'nism,a filling end holder comprising two relatively movable jaws one of which is provided with .wire teeth and the other with friction material to enga e and hold a cut filling end,

call for replenishment of filling, and a jaw opener acting on the jaws to open them as the jaws move rearwardly, and a spring for closing the jaws as they move frontwardly.
7. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a thread cutter adjacent the cloth selvage, a thread cutter adjacent the shuttlebox, a thread endholder mounted between the two and comprising two jaws, one of which is provided with card clothing to frictionally hold the filling end between the two jaws, a jaw opener which acts to open the jaws as they are moved rearwardly, and a spring for closing the jaws as they move frontwardly.
8. A filling end holder mounted between the cloth selvage and adjacent shuttle-box, comprising a pivotally mounted arm, two jaws extending rearwardly from said arm, one having wire teeth to engage and hold a cut filling end between the jaws, a spring carried by the arm and acting normally to close the jaws, and a jaw opener acting to open the jaws for the free reception'of the filling end as they move rearwardly and permit the spring to close the jaws as they move frontwardly.

In a filling replenishing loom, a cutter adjacent the cloth selvage, a cutter adjacent the entrance to the shuttle-box, means for operating the cutters, a filling end holder mounted between the cutters comprising a pair of jaws, one of which is provided with yielding wire teeth, and jaw opening and closing devices constructed and arranged for opening and closing the jaws independent of the cutters to grasp the filling between the cutters and remove the cut end.

In a filling replenishing loom, a cutter adjacent the cloth selvage, a cutter adjacent the shuttle-box, means for operating the cutters, an independently mounted filling end holder between the cutters comprising a pair of jaws one of which is providedwith yielding wire teeth and the other with a fabric friction pad, and means for opening and closing the jaws independent of the cutters to grasp the filling between the cutters and remove the cut end.
11. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a temple thread cutter, a thread cutter adjacent the entrance to the shuttlebox, means for moving the latter towards and from cutting position, a thread end holder comprising two jaws mounted between the cloth selvage and entrance to the shuttle box independent of the cutters, means for moving it towards and from the front of the loom in a path at right angles to the lay, a jaw opening and closing means'independent of the cutters for opening the jaws to receive the filling thread between them as the holder is moved towards the rear of the loom and for closing them when moved to front position.
