To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED E. STAFFORD, acitizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-End Controllers, of which the following description,'in connec tion. with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to filling replenishing looms, and is more particularly directed to improvements in the spent filling end controller.
When filling replenishing is effected, the spent fillin between the cloth selvage and discarded removed from the shuttle, because otherwise it is liable to be drawn into'the shed on a subsequent pick of the shuttle, and form imperfect cloth. The light and fugitive nature of the filling renders the problem of removing it from the danger zone'a diflicult one in practice, and many devices have been devisedto overcome the danger of weaving the spent filling end into the cloth. It has been proposed, for instance, to cut and clamp, the filling end adjacent the shuttle eye when the shuttle is in replenishing position, that the end leading towards the cloth selvage may be removed longitudinally i I advantageous, because-the spent filling itself of the shuttle box, while the end leading to the filling carrier or bobbin in the shuttle may be drawn backwardly through the shuttle eye by the filling carrier or bobbin when it is ejected. y

In one aspect of the invention, the open slot in the front wall of the shuttle box which leads through the lower edge thereof may be conveniently located adjacent the feeler slot of the shuttle when the shuttle is in filling replenishing position, and inasmuch as the inner portion of the shuttle box is not subject to a great strain on the entrance of the shuttle thereinto, it follows that the outer portion of the front wall of the shuttle box may be made of rigid character to properly cooperate with the bindert'o arrest the shut tie at the end of its flight.
The invention and new combination of parts will best be made clear from the following description and the accompanying drawings of one good form of the invention, it being understood that the invention is not restricted to the particular details except ishing end or side of a filling replenis ing loom containing the present invention;

j The loom frame 1 may be of'usual con struction and on the breastbeam are bearings 2, one at each side of the loom, for the usual transfer or rock shaft 3 from which extends an arm 4 having a bifurcated end' piva stand 9 from which extends the arm 10 supporting a hopper 11 containing filling carriers 12, the hopper in the present instance being shown as of the rotary type.
Extending from the arm 10 is the stud or dead shaft 13 on which is mounted the transferrer 14 normally held in its inoperative position by a spring 15, and extending from the hub portion of the transferrer is an arm 16 to which is pivotally connected the usual dog 17 which is adapmd to engage with a hunter 18 on the lay 19 for replenishing purposes. Connected to the shuttle feeler 7 is the slotted arm 20 which is engaged by a pin 21 extending from the dog 17, the construction being such that on call for replenishment of filling by rocking movement of the transfer shaft 3, the dog will be positioned to he engaged by the hunter 18. The parts thus far described are of usual construction.
Mounted on the breast beam of the loom is the temple 22 having .a temple thread cutter 23 for severing the spent filling end a adjacent the cloth selvage.
Mounted on the lay at the replenishing end thereof is the shuttle box 24 for receiving the shuttle 2'5 and holding it during replenishment of filling. The shuttle 25 has the usual feeler slot 26 and in accordance with the invention as shown, the spentfilling end is to he engaged at the feeler slot 2 of the shuttle and withdrawn frontwardly across the lower edge of the front wall of the shuttle box and about the cloth selvage as a center and there held for a time to permit the temple thread cutter to act.
The front wall 27 of the shuttle box is provided with an open slot 28 which leads downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and extends through the lower edge of the front wall. Between the open slot 28 in the front wall of the shuttle box and the terminal inner portion thereof is a space 29 through which the spent filling end may be drawn frontwardlyacross the lower edge of the front wall on replenishment of filling.
The front wall 27 of the shuttle box is secured to the lay by the bolts 30 which extend through suitable lugs 31 projecting from the front wall and located relative to the open slot 28 at the outer portion of the front wall, as shown, the construction being such that the outer portion of the front wall of the shuttle box beyond the open slot 28 is rigid, and this is the portion of the shuttle box which acts most prominently in arresting the shuttle at the end of its flight.
The inner portion 32 of the front wall of the shuttle box has its lower edge 33 inward of the open slot 28 spaced from the race or floor 34 of-the shuttle box sufiiciently to permit the bodily withdrawal of the'spent filling from the shuttle box in a frontward direction about the cloth selvage as a center.
Preferably the slot 28 which opens downwardly through the lower edge of the frontwall of the shuttle box .fiares downwardly, and more particularly at the side of the open slot towards the cloth selvage, as indicated at 35, so that upon withdrawal of the spent filling end frontwardly, itwill be guided by the inclined portion 35 downwardly about the lower edge of the front wall of the shuttle box and pass bodily outward through the space 29.
In the illustrated form of the invention, the spent filling end may be cut and clamped adjacent the feeler slot of the shuttle. and the end leading towards the cloth selvage may be withdrawn frontwardly in a downward direction about the lower edge of the front wall of the shuttle box, while the severed end leading through the shuttle eye to the filling carrier or bobbin will be withdrawn by the filling carrier or bobbin when it is ejected from the shuttle, as indicated in Fig. 3. In effecting this result, any convenient form of thread part-er and clamp may be employed, but in the present instance of the invention, the dead shaft 13 has secured thereto a bracket 36 which extends downwardly and has connected thereto a guideway 37 in which is mounted for sliding movement a carrier 38. The details of this construction may be varied without departing from the true scope of the invention.
Mounted on the slide 38 is a lug 39, Figs. 4 and 5, to which is connected the thread parter and clamp. As shown, the thread parter and clamp comprises the fixed cutting and clamping members 40 and 41 between which is the relatively movable cutter and clamping member 42, the front end portion 43 of which has a pin 44 adapted to be engaged and operated by a trip 45 mounted on an arm 46 which, as shown in Fig. 1, may be adjustably connected to the bracket 36 by a bolt 47. There is nothing new in the particular form of thread parter and clamp as shown, but that described maybe advantageously employed in carrying out the present invention.
Mounted on the dead shaft 13 is the actuator 48, the lower bifurcated end portion 4!) of which engages a pin 50 extending from the slide 38, so that on rocking movement of the actuator on the dead shaft, the slide may be moved toward and from the rear of the loom to position the thread parter and clamp for engagement with the. spent filling and then return the parter and clamp to its frontward position.
Extending laterally from the actuator 48 is an arm 51 the downturned portion 52 of which is yieldingly connected by the spring 53 to a pin 54 extending from the slotted arm 20 of the shuttle feeler, the construction being such that on call for replenishment of filling when the shuttle feeler is moved to- I ward its shuttle feeling position and raises the dog for engagement by the hunter, the actuator 48 will move the slide 38 and the connected thread parter and clamp rearwardly, and cause the thread parter and clamp to enter the open slot 28 in the front wall of the shuttle'box, cut and clamp the filling at this point and on frontward movement of the parter and clamp to withdraw the filling frontwardly and downwardly over the lower edge of the front wallof the shuttle box, so that the portion of the spent filling at the cloth selvage-may be positioned to be cut by the temple thread cutter.
The thread parter and clamp has associated with it the hunter which is adapted to engage the lay or a part'carried thereby when the thread parter and clamp has been moved to its full rearward operating position, and the flexible connection 53 provides suificient yield-ability between the actuator 48 and the shuttle feeler for this purpose.
In the form of thread parter and clamp shown, the movable-jaw or member 42 is opened relative to the fixed jaws or members 4.0. 41 as the thread parter and clamp ismoved to its rearward operating position,
.and such opening is effected by the trip 45.
In order to close the thread parter'and clamp to cut and clamp the filling, any suitable means may be employed, and, as shown in the present instance,'the transferrer 14 has connected therewith a cutting and clamping closing member 56, the lower end portion 57 of which is adapted to act upon the pin 44 of the movable member of the parter and clamp as the transferrer effects replenishment, as indicated in Fig. 3, so that after being closed the thread parter and clampwill be moved to its frontward position and still hold the filling end leading to the cloth selvage, that it may be positioned for the action of the tem le thread cutter. The trip 45 of course yiel ds to the passage of the pin 44 as the cutterand clamp are moved rontwardly.
The closing member 56, Fig. 3, is adjustably connected to a lever 58 mounted on a bracket 59 secured to the transferrer and a spring 60 normally acts to hold the closing member yieldingly in position relative to the transferrer.

Claims: I 1. In a filling replenishin loom,.the comb1nat1on of the lay, a shutt e box at the replenishing end of the lay having a front wall;

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle box at the replenishing end of the lay having a slot in its front wall opening and flaring downwardly through the lower edge of the wall in register with the feeler slot of the shuttle when in replenishing position and communicating with a space between the lower edge of the wall and shuttle race extending to the inner end of the wall, and means for engaging the spent filling at the feeler slot .and withdrawing it frontwardly across the lower edge of the wall about the cloth selvage as a center.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttlebox at the replenishing end thereof having a front wall provided with an open slot between its inner and outer endsextendingthrough the lower edge of the wall, the race'or floor of the shuttle box and lower edge of the wall inward of said open slot being separated to form a space extending from the slot to the inner terminal of the shuttle box, and a clamp for engaging the spent filling at said open slot and withdrawing it frontwardly across the lower edge of the wall about the cloth selvage as a center. I

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle box at the replenishing end of the lay having a front wall provided with a downwardly extending opening through the lower edge thereof adjacent the feeler slot of the shuttle and communicating with a space formed between the race or floor of the shuttle box and the lower edge of the wall extending from said open ing to the inner terminal of the shuttle box, and means for engaging the spent filling and withdrawing it frdntwardly across the lower edge of the wall.
9. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle box at the replenishing end of the lay having a front wall provided with a slot opening through the lower edge of the wall in register with the feeler slot of the shuttle when in replenishing position, and extending to the inner terminal of the shuttle box, and means for enaging the spent filling and withdrawing it frontwardly across the lower edge of the front wall about the cloth selvage as a center.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle box at the replenishing end of thelay'having a continuous .front wall provided with an opening between its ends extending downwardly through the lower edge of the wall and communicating with a space extending to the name to this specification.

In a filling replenishing'loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle box at the replenishing end thereof having a continuous front wall provided with a slot between its inner and outer ends extending downwardly through the lower edge of the wall and inclined towards the cloth selvage for the passage of the spent filling,'means for withdrawing the spent filling end frontwardly through said slot across the loweredge of the front wall about the cloth selvage as'a center, and operating mechanism for said means rendered effective on call for replenishment of filling.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle box provided with a continuous front wall supported wholly upon the lay race and having an opening between its inner and outer ends extending through the lower edge of the wall communicating with a space extending to the inner end of the wall, and means for engaging the spent filling through said opening and withdrawing it frontwardly through said space below the lower edge of the wall.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle box having a one piece front .wall secured to the shuttle race and provided with an opening between its ends extending-downwardly through the lower edge of the front wall adjacent the inner end of the shuttle when properly boxed, the inner portion of the front wall having its lower edge above the shuttle race to provide a space leading to the inner end ofthe shuttle box, and means for withdrawing the spent filling frontwardly through said space below the loweredge of the shuttle box.
14. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle box having a one piece front wall, means for securing the one piece front wall to the lay at the outer end portion of the front wall to resist the shuttle pressure, said wall having an opening extending downwardly through the lower edge of the front wall near the inner end thereof communicating with a space leading to the inner end of the wall, and means for withdrawing the spent filling frontwardly through said opening and space.
