FILLING-SEND CONTROLLER.
Application fledMay 14. 1925. Serial No. 30,241.
contemplates that the end leading towards the cloth selvage and terminating at the To (1N whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, ALFRED E. STAFFORD,
-ifl
a citizen el the United States, residing at llopedalc, in the county of W'orcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-End Controllers, of which the following description, in conncction with the :uncompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
'lhis invention relates to filling replenishing looms wherein the filling is replenished from time to time.
When filling replenishment is effected, there is a spent filling end extending from the cloth sclvage to the shuttle eye and thence into the shuttle and to 4the bobbin which is to be ejected and such filling end must be removed, otherwise it` is liable to be carried info the shed on a subsequent pick of" the shuttle and form imperfect cloth. Much attention and great inventive skill have been devoted to the spent filling end, and various means have been suggested and employed for this purpose.
lt has been proposed, for instance, to cut and clamp the filling end adjacent the shutfle eye when the shuttle is in the replenishing box, so that the end leading towards the cloth selvage may be removed, While the end leading to the filling carrier or bobbin in the shuttle may 'pass backwardly through the shuffle eye with the bobbin when it is ejected. ln this type of' filling end controller it is usual to provide the shuttle with ay recess near the shuttle eye, by removing a. part ot' the .shuttle wood, in order that the 1mi-ter or parter and clamp may engage the filling.
It has been proposed, also, to engage the spent filling adjacent the fceler slot of the shuttle when in replenishing position and to withdraw the end longitudinally through the front wall of the shuttle box.
In accordance with the present invention, means are provided for engaging the spent filling at the ecler slot of' the shuttle when in replenishing position and to withdraw the filling frontwardly about the cloth selvage as a center, in which case,of course,-
the usual shuttle feeler thread cutter is not employed, although in some instances it may be. In case the shuttle feeler thread cutter and clamp which is of usual construction, is employed, the present invention shuttle feeler thread cutter and clamp, shall be withdrawn over the top ot the shuttle box, but the preferred construction omits the shuttle eeler thread cutter and clamp and swings the spent filling end from a point adjacent the feeler slot outwardly relative to the front Wall of the shuttle box and about the cloth selvage as a center, so that the spent filling end is positioned at the cloth selvage f'or the action of the usual temple thread cutter.
In carrying the invention into practical effect, the front wall of the shuttle box is provided with an open slot leading from the edge of the front wall at a point adjacent the feeler slot of the shuttle when the latter is in replenishing position, so that the filling end may be swung outwardly over the top of the front wall of' the shuttle box and about the cloth selvage as a center.
The mvention and new combination of parts will best be made clear from the followlng description and the accompanying dawmgs of one'good practical form thereo In the drawings:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a loom at the replenishing side, provided with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail showing one form of the thread parter and clamp to engage the spent filling at the feeler slot of the shuttle when in replenishing position and withdraw it outwardly about the cloth selvage as a center;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional end elevation showing the relation of the parts atthe time of replenishment of filling, with the thread parter and clamp acting upon the filling at the feeler slot of the shuttle;
Fig. 4. is an enlarged perspective View y showing the front Wall of the shuttle box provided with an open slot leading downwardly from the top thereof at a point adjacent the feeler slot of the shuttle, and the thread parter and clamp withdrawing the spent filling end over the top of the shuttle box about the cloth selvage as a center;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail showing more particularly the spent filling end as having been cut and held by the parter and clamp; and
Fig. 6 is a front elevation of details of position.
.gm/accordance with the present invention,l Vthe spent fillin endfleading tothe cloth selvage is remove outwardly from a point adjacent the feelerslot of the shuttle and about" the cloth selvage as a center, in order to position the spent filling end at the cloth selvage for the action of the temple thread eutter, all as will more fully appear.v
The loom ramel is of usual construction and the breast beam 2 has mounted thereon the usual temple 3 provided with atemple thread vcutter ing the end of the filling on they clothA selvage.
be conveniently secured tothe breast beam,
is the hopper 6 for holding a series of filling 7 having a supply of' carriers or bobbinsl filling wound thereon. shown as of the rotary type, tion is not restricted thereto,
` The hopper 6 -is asany form of filling su plyine hopper may be employed.
Extending rdm the vhopper stand is the shaft 8 on which is mounted 9, as usual. The transferrer p arm or dead the transferrer 9 is normally under `the iniuence of a spring l() for maintaining it in raised or inoperative position, and extending downwardly from the transferrer 9 is the arm 11 having pvotally connected thereto the dog 12 the end of which is adapted tobe engaged by a bunter 13 on the lay when filling replenishment is to be effected. 'I hese parts ymay be' of usual construction.
Mounted in bearings 14, one at each side of the loom, is the transverse or rock shaft 15 having secured thereto the 'rearwardly extending arm 16, as usual, which is normally under the iniiuence of a spring 17 ,'l
and connected to the arm' 16 is the finger 1 8 which engages a pin 19 connected to the shuttle feeler 20, the construction being such that when replenishment is called by rocking movement of the shaft 15, the shuttle feeler will be moved r arwardly into its position for determinin,D whether or not'the shuttle is properly boxed. rocking the transverse or rockshaft 15 when filling is to be changed is not illustrated, be- Acause such means is now well understood iu the art and may comprise any well-known form of mechanism for this purpose.
As hereinbefore indicated, the preferredv form of the invention contemplates that the spent filling end is to be parted at a point adjacent'the feeler slot of the shuttle when in replenishing position,- and the end thereof leadin to the cloth selvagxe is to beengaged an held by a clamp w ich acts upon replenishment to move the end leading to the cloth salvage over the top ofthe front 65 wall of the shuttlebox, as shown.
Secured to and extending downwardly o tively. xed members 26, 27 'is mounted on the pivotal support 28 the movable thread parter and clamp 29, the
or selvage cutter 4 for sever# Mounted on the standp, which may" but the invenl be swun .The means for` ,c
operative of filling,
asoman the mechanism for moving thethread rfrom theldead `shaft 8, Fig'. 1, is a frame or er and clamp to and from its thread engag-- th bracket 21` to which Iis secured by bolts 22 ideway 23 of afsliding carrier 24 to whic the threadparter and clamp are connected .In the present instance of the invention, the thread parter and clamp are carrie'dby avlug 25fextending from the carrier or slide 24, as indicated 1n Fig. 2. The thread arter and clamp comprises the relaetween which edge whereof towards the shuttle e e serves to part the spent filling that it may ge drawn backwardl through the shuttle eye and from the s iuttle when the spent filling car- 'rier or bobbinis ejected, and the face portionof the thread parter and clamp towards the cloth selvage is formed to clamp the end leading to the cloth selvage and swing the end over the top of the shuttle box about the cloth selvage as a center. The particular construction of the thread parter and clamp forms no essential art of the present invention,the re uisiteeing that the spent lillin Lend sha l Abe parted and clamped at a ornt adjacent the eeler slot of the shuttle osition, andcthat the e `cloth selvage shall the edge of the when in replenishing fend leading towards t outwardly over shuttle box.
Loosely mounted on the dead shaft 8 yis the carrier or slide o erating member 31 the lower end portion of which is conveniently bifurcated at 32 for the reception of the pin 38 extending from the slide 24, and the operating me yber 31 is connected to the shuttle vfeeler, so that, as the shuttle feeler is moved rearwardly on call or replenishment of: filling, the operating member 3l will move the thread parter and clamp into its rearwardly operatngposition through the open slot of the front wall of the shuttle box adjacent the eeler slot of the shuttle.
' In the present instance of the invention, the operating member 31 is connected by a bridge 34 to an arm 35. The shuttle feeler has the usualoslotted arm 36 which is connected-'to the dog 12 for moving it into position on call for replenishment and the arm 35 is connected by a spring 37 to. a pin 38 extending laterally from the .arm36, the construction .being such for replenishment of filling, the
that on call shuttle feeler will be moved towards its @20 rearward position and-through the action'v described, yieldingly move the thread parter and clamp rearwardly to the performance of its thread parting and clamping function.
The thread partei' and clamp, as indicated in Fig-4, is normally closed when the par-ter and clamp is in'its frontward position, to Y thereby hold the filling end leading to the cloth selvage for the action of the temple thread cutter, but on call for replenishment of filling, the thread partei' and clamp is opened to engage the filling at the feeler slot of the shuttle when in replenishing position. Any suitable means may be employed for the functional operation of the thi'ead parter and clamp, but, as indicated in the present instance, the thi'ead partei' and clamp is opened as it is moved rearwardly to its filling engaging position by means of a trip 39, as indicated in Fig. 2, which acts upon a pin 4() extending from the movable membci'2f) of the thread partei' and clamp, and when the transfer takes place, lhe movable member 2) of the partei' and i'lalnp is closed by means connected to the transferi'er. Such means, in the present instaure of the invention, consists of an actuator 41 which may be secured to the transferrer and, as shown, is mounted upon the lever 42 pivotally secured to the transferrer at 423 and nornially under the influence of a spring 44 to permit yielding movement of the actuator should obstruction occur in the movement of the thread partei' and clamp responsive to the operation of the actuator. The parts for operating the partei' and clamp as above described may be substantially the same as those shown and described more fully in the application of Alfi'ed E. Stafford, Serial No. 729,670, filed Aug. 2, 1924.
rlhe lay 45 is provided with a shuttle box 46 at the replenishing end thereof, the front wall of which is furnished with an open slot 47 which is adjacent the feeler slot 48 of the shuttle 49 when the latter is in replenishing position. The front wall 50 of the shuttle box may be secured to the lay by the usual securing means, such as the bolts 5l, and the slot 47 which is formed in the'front wall of the shuttle box is inclined inwardly or towards the cloth selvage. In the present instance this inclination is effected by means of the inclined wall 52, the result being that when the thread parter and clamp is moved to its thread engaging position through the open slot 47 in the front wall of the shuttle box and adjacent the feeler slot 48, it will pai't or cut the filling end leading to the shuttle eye and on retraction of the thread parter and clamp, the clamped portion leading to the cloth selvage will be moved frontwardly over the top of the shuttle box, as indicated in Fig. 4, and about the cloth selvage as a center, to thereby position the selvage end of the spent filling for the action of the temple thread cutter.
Since the frnt wall of the shuttle 49 is usually provided with a longitudinal groove 53, Fig. 3, it follows that the cut end of the spent filling will readily pass backward through the shuttle eye when the spent filling carrier or bobbin is ejected from the shuttle, and since the binding effect upon the shuttle in the box is mainly exerted at the breast4 or outer portion of the shuttle, the end portion a of the filling, Fig. 4, leading to the cloth selvage may be readily moved upwardly and outwardly over the top of the front Wall of the 'shuttle box.
From the described construction, as one good, practical form of the present invention, it will be apparent that the open slot which is formed in the front wall of the shuttle box is positioned to substantially' register with the feeler' slot of the shuttle when the latter' is in replenishing position, thereby obviating the necessity of weakening the shuttle itself by the formation of an extra opening for the entrance ot' the thread partei' and clamp, and upon functional operation of the thread pai-ter and clamp, the end leading to the filling carrier or bobbin will be Withdrawn from the shuttle when the spent filling carrier or bobbin is ejected, while the end leading to the cloth selvage will be moved or swung outwardly, ovei' the top of the shuttle box, in the present instance, and will be held by the clamp in position for the action ofthe temple thread cutter.
While the details of the thread partei' and clamp may be widely varied in construction, and the means for actuating the thread parter'and clamp may be varied within the true scope of the invention, it is believed that applicant is the first in the art to provide for cutting and clamping the spent filling at la point adjacent the feeler slot of the shut tle when in replenishing position, and withdrawing or swinging the end leading towards the cloth selvage outwardly over the top of the shuttle box to position the end leading to the cloth selvage for the action of the temple thread cutter.
