This invention relates to a weft replenishing loom of the type in which weft carriers are transferred horizontally rearward from a storage magazine to a substantially exhausted shuttle. The invention is particularly applicable to a double shuttle loom, in which weft carriers are transferred from either an upper or a lower magazine position to an upper or lower shuttle as required.
It is the general object of my invention to provide improvedgiveway devices, permitting either an upper or a lower weft carrier to be removed from a magazine for transfer, while effectively 7 retaining the remaining weft carriers in the magazine.
A further feature of my invention relates to the provision of a thread guiding device, so designed that it will cooperate with said giveway devices and will present a smooth guiding surface for the weft end of either an upper or a lower weft carrier after transfer.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of parts of a loom embodying my improvements;
Fig. 2 is a'rear elevation thereof, looking in the direction of the arrow 2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, taken along the line 3-3 in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional elevation,
- similar to Fig. 3 but showing certain parts in a different position.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a portion of a loom frame 10, a lay 11, and double shuttle boxes 12 mounted thereon. A vertical magazine 15 is mounted in fixed position on the loom frame 10, adjacent the forward limit of movement of the shuttle boxes 12.
The magazine 15 comprises a head frame member 16 and a foot frame member 17, each provided with 'a vertical groove or recess adapted to receive the butt or tip of a weft carrier. Upper and lower transferrers 20 and 21 are mounted in guideways 22 on the frame 10 and are separately slidable rearwardly to transfer the weft carriers W to the shuttles S.
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be noted that the upper transferrer 20 is positioned opposite the third weft carrier in the magazine 15,
and the lower transferrer 21 is positioned opposite the first or lowermost weft carrier in the magazine.
The magazine frame member 17 is provided with a pair of upper and lower giveway devices 25, positioned opposite the tips of the first and third weft carriers in the magazine, counting upward from the bottom. The giveway devices 25 are pivotally mounted, and springs 26 tension the giveway devices and hold them yieldingly in operative position. When a weft carrier is transferred, the corresponding giveway 25 yields to permit rearward movement of the tip of said weft carrier.
Similar upper and lower giveway devices 30 are pivotally mounted on the head frame member 16 of the magazine and are provided with tension springs 31 (Fig. 3) by which they are held yieldingly in operative position. Either the upper or the lower giveway device 30 yields to permit rearward move-- ment of the butt of a weft carrier when said weft carrier is transferred to one of the shuttles S.
It will be noted that each giveway device 25 and 30 is separately and independently tensioned, and that one of each pair of giveway devices remains in operative position when the other device yields to permit re moval of a weft carrier. Accordingly, there is noopportunity for escape or displacement of the remaining weft carriers.
Whenever transfer takes place, the carriers move down,as indicated in Fig. 4, but are temporarily prevented from full downward movement by engagement with the top sur face of the transferrer 20 or 21 which is active. The giveway device 30 closes as the transferrer is withdrawn and is in operative position before downward movement of the weft carriers in the magazine is completed. a1 have also provided special means for guiding the weft end or thread extending from the selvage to the magazine, such provision comprising a thread guiding member 40 pivoted to swing about the axis of the stud 41 on which the giveway devices are pivoted. A spring 42 tensions the member and holds it yieldingly in the position indicated in Figs. 1 and It will be noted that the operative thread guiding portion of the device extends from the bottom of the. magazine to a point above the third weft carrier, so that a weft end extending from the selvage to the magazine will always be engaged by the member 40 and will be prevented from entering cracks or openings between the giveway devices 30 and the magazine frame.
Whenever, either givewav device 30' is pushed rearward by a weft carrier during transfer, the member 40 moves correspondingly rearward, as indicated in Fig. 4, but retains its thread guiding functions.
My improvements are particularly desirable in a, loom in which the weft carriersin the magazine are tied together in pairs, sothat when one member of the pair is transferred, a weft end extends from the selvage tothe other weft carrier. This weft endE (Fig. 1) is moved gradually forward by the weaving, of the fabric and is eventually caught and held under a retaining device The retaining device is preferably in theform of a weight having a partially conical under portion 51 and loosely mounted. on a stud EJhen thus held by the retaining device, the weft end E is drawn at an angle around the thread guiding device 40, but the smooth, vertically extended surface thereof prevents catching or breakage of the thread. T he retaining device 50 forms no part of my present invention and is fully described and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 336,626, filed J an. :n, 1929.
From the detailed description above given, it will be evident that either an upper or a lower weft carrier may be transferred at any time, being released by yielding movement of the corresponding giveway devices and 30, and that whenever one of the de vices 30 moves rearward, the thread guiding member 40 has a corresponding rearward movement but without interfering with its thread guiding functions.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages-thereof, I do not wish to be limited to thedetails herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is V 1. In a magazine having vertically disposed weft carrier guideways, a separate give.- way device for each end of the lowermost weft carrier in said guideways, an additional separate giveway device for each end of the weft carrier second above said lowermost weft carrier, the intervening weft carrier being held from lateral displacement by the fixed side walls of the magazine guideway and the pair of giveway devices engaging one Weft carrier remaining in operative position when the pair of giveway devices engaging the other Weft carrier yield to permitremoval of said weft carrier from said magazine.

In a weft replenishing. loom, amagaz'ine,a gi-veway device pivotally mounted to swing about a. vertical axis thereon, a thread guiding member pivoted to swing about the same axis, yielding means eflective to hold said. giveway device in operative position, and yielding means to'hold said guiding member against saidgiveway device.
5. In a weft replenishing loom, a magazine, upper'and lower giveway devices sepa rately'mounted to swing independently about a common vertical axis thereon, separate neans totension said devices, axthrea'd guiding: member comprising zu plate covering the rear side ofboth of said giveway devices, said plate being pivoted to swing about the same vertical axis, andmeans to tension said thread guiding member.
