A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
FILLING CLAMPING AND PARTI NG. MEANS FOR LOOMS.
Application filed July 16, 1921;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. HEDLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Occum', county of New London, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement provide a filling clamping and parting mechanism which acts automatically to clamp'the filling extending from the selvage Ofthe cloth to the filling carrier to be'abandoned, part the end and carry it forward into the field of action of the usual temple thread cutter which severe the filling end close to the selvage.
The filling clamping and parting means usually has as its support, upon which it is mounted and carried into and out of operative position, the familiar shuttle feeler/ This shuttle feeler is usually constituted as ing movement toward and from, or transversely ofgthe lay but also a movement longitudinally of the lay. One ofthe problems in mechanism of this type is to secure accurate and efficient operation of the filling clamping and parting means at the required time.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple. accurate and efficient means for operating the filling clamping and parting means upon the operation of the means for transferring the fresh filling carrier from the magazine to the lay.
The object of the invention further is to provide a flexible connection extending between the filling clamping and parting means and an actuating element moved upon the operation of the transferring means.
The object of the invention further is'to provide such a fiexibleconnection which will fiex both in awdirection transversely of the Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patent ed Aug. 29, 1922;. Serial no. 485,383:
iay and in adirection' longitudinally of the The nature and object of the invention' will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in vertical cross section looking from the interior towardthe side of an automatic filling replenishing loom embodying a preferred form of the'p're'sent invention and with only those parts shown which are necessary to a disclosure of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with many of the parts omitted and showing the mechanism in a different position.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a portion of the mechanism showing the parts added to the loom to embody a preferred form'of the present invention.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the loom-at the transfer side with only those parts shown pertinent to the invention.
The invention is shown as embodied in an automatic filling replenishing loom of the well known Northrop type and as this type of loom-is well known and familiar tothoseskilled in the art, it is unnecessary to de scribe or illustrate in detail the general construction and operation of the loom or anything more than those elements directly concerned with the present invention.
Such a loom comprises the usual frame 1, the lay 2 mounted to swing toward and from the breast beam 3, the magazine 4 containing the supply of fresh filling carriers herein shown as bobbins 5 and rigidly secured to the frame or breast beam 3 and the shuttle 6 which is picked back and forth on the lay.
In this type of loom when the filling on the filling carrier in the shuttle 6 has become substantially exhausted suitable mechanism acts to rock the shaft 7 extending at the front of the loom. The rocking of i this shaft raises the arm 8 andthis armin turn actuates the usual shuttle feeler 9. This shuttle feeler is in the form of an arm pivoted to the frame at 10 to swing toward andfrom or transversely of the lay; This arm also slides on the pivot 10 and is given its sliding movement by the cam 11 so that it also moves longitudinally of the lay. The main function of the shuttle feeler is to ascertain if'the' shuttle is properly'boxed'at controlled by the shuttle feeler.
the transfer side of the loom. If it encounters the shuttle by reason of the shuttle not being-properly boxed, it acts to prevent the operation of 1 the transferring mechanism. This result is secured because the operation of the transferring mechanism is For that purpose, in the form illustrated, a slotted link 12 is pivotally mounted on the'shuttle feeler at 13 and engages a dog 14 pivoted to an arm 15; depending from the usual transferrer arm 16 which is pivotally mounted on,a stud 17 in the magazine stand. When the shuttle feeler swings rearwardly and passes the shuttle, if properly boxed, it acts through the mechanism thus described to raise the dog 14: into the path of a hunter 18 on the lay-s0 that as the lay heats up, the transferrer arm is rocked about its stud 17 and effects in a familiar manner the transfer of a fresh filling carrier from the magazine to theylay, or in this case into the shuttle 6 on the lay.
, The filling clamping and parting means illustrated is also of a usual familiar type and, as is usual, is supported. and carried by the shuttle feeler arm 9. This filling clamping and parting mechanism is shown as comprising a pair of fixed blades 19 and an intermediate movable or pivoted blade 20 all secured to the rearward end of the shuttle feelerar m, themovableblade being pivotally-mountedat 21. i The movable blade is provided with a laterally projecting pin 22 and a pivoted switch cam 23 is mounted on the upward end of'a'n arm 24; extending upwardly from the frame. As the shuttle feeler 9swings rearwardly the pin 22 engages the .bottom of the sw tch cam and the movable temple thread cutter 25 so that it will be severed close to the selvage, accordingly, the filling clamping and partlng-ineans must act upon transfer taking place to clamp and sever the filling adjacent the nose of the shuttle and then as the clamping and parting means swing forwardly holding the severed. end extending to the fell, the filling clamping and parting means must move bodily longitudinally of the lay or toward the selvage so as not to break the filling end until. it is carried safely into the field of action of the temple thread cutter.
The present invention is concerned particularly withthe closing movement of the lilling'clamping'and parting means and with 1 ,427,sso
the rovision of mechanism for insuring an accurate and eflicient closing movement upon transfer taking place. In the construction illustrated this inov'em'entis preferably effected directly from the transferrer arm.
' A suitable bracket 26 is secured as by the bolt 27 rigidly to the frame of the loom, being in this ease secured to the fian'ge28 of the magazine stand, which in turn is secured to the breast beam 3. This bracket extends forward of the magazine stand andis provided at each side with upturned flanges 29 and 30. In these flanges is mounted a transverse shaft 31 having at one end rigidly secured thereto a depending arm or finger. 32 contacting at its lower end with the depending arm 15 of the transferrer arm 16 when the transferrer arm is in normal or elevated position and having near the other end an upwardly projecting arm or finger 33. In. a forward extension of the flange. is secured a trans verse stud 34 on which is pivotally mounted a rearwardly projecting arm 35 which restsupon and is supported by the arm or finger 33. This arm 35 is herein termed an actuator because it isutilized as the means for actuating the filling clamping and parting means and receives its actuating movement from the transferrer arm through the mechanism described. A direct flexible connection is provided between tlns actuator arm 35 andthe filling clamping and parting means, and in thiscase. the movable member or blade of the filling clamping and parting means. This flexible connection may take various forms and may be made of any suitable material. Preferably it is a flat leather strip 36 with its upper end clamped in a generally horizontal plane to the rear fiat end of the arm 35 by the bolt 37 and washer 38 and with its lower end secured in a generally vertical plane to one side of the movable blade 20 as by the pin 39. v
N hen now transfer of a fresh filling car-. rier is to be effected and the shuttle feeler is swung to rearward position, as shown. in Fig. 2, and the lay beats up and the hunter 18 strikes the dog 14, the trausferrer arm is rocked. The depending arm 15 of the transferrer arm thereupon acts'to rock the shaft 31 andraise the actuator 35. Thereupon a dirort pull is given through the flexible connection 36 to closethe movable member 20 of the filling clamping and parting means There is thus presented a simple, efficient and accurate means for operating the filling clamping and parting means upon operation of the transferring means.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
