Be it known that I, ALONZO E. RHoADEs, citizen of the United States, and resident of Hopedale, county of lVorcester, State of l'assachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shuttle-Feeler and Filling Clamping and Parting Means, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing represent-ing like parts.
This invention relates to the shuttle feeler mechanism and the mechanism for clamping and parting the iilling in an automatic filling replenishing loom.
The main object of the invention is to provide a construction which shall be mounted and operated above the lay so that the parts may be readily accessible for replacement or repair and other purposes.
The objects and natureof the invention will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In 'the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an end elevation partially in vertical cross section, with the main portion of the loom broken away and with only those parts directly concerned with the pres ent invention' shown and looking from the inside of the loom toward the loom side.
Fig. 2 is a detail in front elevation and on a smaller scale ofthe parts directly concerned with the present invention.
The invention is shown as embodied in Yits preferred form in an automatic filling -replenishing loom of the Northrop type and as that type of loom is well known and familiar to those skilled in the art it will only be necessary to illustrate and describe those portions of the loom directly concerned with the present invention.
rThe loom frame is shown as comprising the end or side portions 1 connected at the front by the breast beam 2. The lay 3 on which reciprocates the shuttle 4 is carried by swords 5 and swings toward and from the breast beam. At the replenishing side of the loom a magazine or hopper stand 6 is mounted and carries a suitable magazine or hopper, in this case of the rotary type, in which is the supply of fresh filling carriers 7. y
When the filling in the running shuttle "has become exhausted, or is nearing exhaustion, suitable mechanism is put in motion to transfera fresh filling carrier fromthe magazine or hopper into the shuttle and to eject therefrom the filling carrier to be abandoned. In the Northrop .type loom illustrated a controller rod 8 extends along at the front of the breast beam and ,thisy rod is rocked upon the call vfor filling replenishment by suitable mechanism. Thereinto the path of a bunter carriedl by the l lay. As the lay beats forward after the call for filling replenishment this bunter 15 Vstrikes the dog 14 and the dog 14 being pivoted to the shorter arm -16 of the ktransferrer 17 swingsthe transferrer about its pivot 18 downwardly and the transferrer thus acts to transfer a fresh filling carrier from the magazine or hopper into the shuttle boxed beneath on the lay.
The present invention has to do with "two well known and'familiar mechanisms which are necessary in this automatic type of loom. vA shuttle feeler is ,provided to prevent the operation of filling replenishment if the shuttle is n ot properly in its box beneath the magazine or hopper when .transfer is to take place for otherwise there would be a smash and much damage done. A lill.- ing clamping and parting means is provided to sever the filling extending from the fell of the cloth to the shuttle and carry it into the path of the `usual templel or selvage thread cutter and also rto carry it to a position where it will not become entangled with the loom parts or caught and thrown into` the shed.y As both of these general mechanisms are well known and familiar and as this invention only relates -to certain specific improvements therein .it will only be necessary to describe jthem ina general way.
In ythe particular construction illustrated as the preferred embodiment of the invention the shuttle feeler 19 is provided with an ulpwardly extending shank 20 and this shan is mounted at its upper end on the hopper stand at a point above the lay. When', as is usual, the shuttle feeler acts as the support for the lling clamping and feeler.
parting means it is necessary for the shuttle feeler to have in addition to its forward and rearward movement a lateral movement so that as the shuttle feeler moves forwardly with the filling end extending from the fell held clamped in the filling clamping means this end will not be stretched and broken. The shuttle feeler shank 2O is therefore provided at its upper end with an elongated hub 2l which is mounted to pivot and slide laterally on a stud 22 projecting from the hopper stand. The required lateral movement of the shuttle feeler is effected by a cam mounted on the hopper stand and cooperating with the shank of the shuttle In the construction illustrated a bracket 23 is bolted to the hopper stand and is provided with a projecting fiange 24 in which is formed a cam slot 25. A pin 26 projects downwardly from a shouldered portion of the shank 2O and rides in the slot 25.
The forward and rearward movement of the shuttle feeler is secured by a connection between it and the arm il already described. For this purpose a block 27 is pivoted at 28 on the arm 29 projecting rearwardly from the shank 20, a similar block 30 is pivoted at 31 on the upper end of the arm 11 and a rigid flat bar 32 is pivoted in slots in the blocks 27 and 30 on pins 33 extending at right angles to the pivots 28 and 3l. Thus there is provided between the arm l1 and the shuttle feeler shank a connection which will transmit thrust and at the same time will permit the required relative lateral movement of the shuttle feeler.
The filling clamping and parting means comprises the usual rigid cutting and clamping blades secured to the lower end of the shuttle feeler shank and the movable cutter blade 34 pivoted at 35 on the shuttle feeler. This blade is provided with a depending tail 36 and a laterally extending pin 37 by which it is operated. When the shuttle feeler is moved rearwardly upon the call for filling replenishment carrying with it the filling clamping and parting means the movable blade 84 must be swung to open position so as to enable the filling end to be carried between the blades upon the beat up of the lay and as this beat up takes place the movable blade 34C must be closed to clamp and art the filling. The closing movement is e ected by the lay striking against the depending tail 36. The opening movement is effected by a switch cam cooperating with the lpin 37. This switch cam 38 is shown as of triangular shape and pivoted at 39 toa supporting bracket i0 mounted above the lay and shown as bolted at ffl to the top of the breast beam. The lower portion of the switch cam 38 is positioned laterally away from the support 40 and in the path of the pin 37. As the shuttle feeler moves rearwardly the pin 37 acting against the inclined face of the switch cam 38 swings the movable blade 34 to open position. Upon the forward movement of the shuttle feeler the pin 37 engaging the vertical face of the switch cam swings it out of the way and passes beneath it.
Tt will thus be seen that a very simple rigid and durable form of construction of these important parts of the loom is provided. The shuttle feeler with its connected filling and clamping and parting meansv the cam for giving the lateral movement to the shuttle feeler and the switch cam and its support for operating the fillino clamping and parting means are all mounted well above the lay and in a position where they are readily accessible for replacement and repair.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
l. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a frame, a lay, a hopper stand and hopper for the supply of fresh filling carriers, a shuttle feeler having an upwardly extending shank mounted at its upper end to swing forwardly and rearwardly and to slide laterally on the hopper stand at a point above the lay, a cam on the hopper stand cooperating with the shank to effect the said lateral movement, filling clamping and parting means carried by the shuttle feele'r, an` arm mounted at its lower end on the leoni frame at a point below the lay to swing forwardly and rearwardly,A a connection between the arm and the shuttle feeler acting to transmit thrust and permit relative lateral movement therebetween, and means for swinging the arm rearwardly upon the call for filling replenishing.
