SLACK-THREAD PRODUCER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED E. STAFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improve ment in Slack-Thread Producers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
The present invention relates to filling replenishing looms, wherein a fresh supply of filling is furnished prior to complete exhaustion of the filling in the running shuttle.
In looms of this general type, when a call for filling replenishment has been made, it is theusual practice to part the old filling thread between the cloth selvage and the outgoing filling carrier and to carry the end of the parted filling thread leading from the clothzselvage frontwardly' in order to place it in position for the action of the temple thread cutter. Inasmuch as the distance between the cloth selvage and thread parting and clamping means is less when the parting and clamping means is in operative or rear position than when such means is i in front or inoperative position, it is evident that the filling between the cloth selvage and clamp is liable to be broken when, after having grasped the filling thread, the clamp is moved to its front or inoperative position. To obviate this, it has heretofore been proposed to mount the parting and clamping means on the shuttle 'fe eler and to shift the shuttle feeler laterally away from the cloth selv-age as it is moved from its normal front position rearwardly into operative position on call for filling replenishment, and to shift it laterally toward the cloth selvage when the shuttle feeler and part ingand clamping means holding the end of the filling thread returns to front or normal position. This has served to relieve the filling end from the breaking strain to which it would otherwise be subjected and while it has operated efiiciently and satisfactorily, it has required the introduction of special devices to give to the shuttle feeler and the parting and clamping means the required lateral movements first in one direction and then in the reverse direction.
An important feature of the present invention, therefore, consists of means for drawing a supply of filling thread from the outgoing filling carrier after a call. for replenishment to provide slack thread between the cloth selvage and clamping means. This feature of the invention may be variously contrived, and in the present instance is associated with the shuttle feeler which on call for replenishment of filling is moved rearwardly into operative position and carries with it the slack thread producing means.
Before the thread leading from the cloth selvage to the filling carrier to be abandoned is parted and grasped by the clamp, it is desirable that the slack thread which is to be furnished shall be drawn from the filling carrier and placed between the cloth selvage and clamp. Another important feature of the invention, therefore, consists in a slack thread producer which shall be operative on call for replenishment of filling to draw a supply of filling thread from the outgoing filling carrier and place such supply between the clamp and cloth selvage. This feature of the invention in the present instancethereof is carried into effect by mounting the slack thread producer upon the shuttle feeler atthe side thereof adjacent the cloth selvage, and actuating said slack thread producer to draw a supply from the outgoing filling carrier prior to the action of the parting and on or movable with the shuttle feeler.
Other features of the invention, in addition to the above, will be hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings which show one practical embodiment of the'invention.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view at the filling replenishing end of a loom provided with the present invention, the parts being in position after a call for filling replenishment, but prior to the transfer of the fresh supply of filling;
Fig. 2 is a detached detail on an enlarged scale, showing the slack thread producing feature of the present invention associated with the shuttle feeler and thread cutter and clamp;
Fig. 3 is a side view of a temple thread cutter which may be employed in connection with the present invention;
Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view through the lay and the breast beam, showing by full and dotted lines, different posiplan view of the parts shown by Fig. 9 and Fig. 11 isa section on the line 11, of Fig.
The loom frame for supporting the oper ating parts may be of any usual or desired character and herein is shown as comprising the uprights l on which is supported the breast beam 2. The hopper stand for co-n taining the supply of filling to be transferred on call for replenishment, is herein shown as of the type for holding a supply of wound filling carriers to be transferred to the shuttle, but obviously, the invention is not restricted in this respect, and shown, the hopper comprises the heads one of which is partially shown in Fig. l as supported from the loom frame by means of the bracket 4. The hopper may, of course, be variously contrived, and supported from the loom frame, as circumstances require.
The lay 5 carries the usual shuttle-boxes 6, one of which is shown in Fig. l, and the la itself is mounted upon the usual lay swore s 7 which are supported as usual, from the lower rock shaft of the loom.
lVhere the fresh supply of filling to be transferred consists of wound filling carriers or bobbins as typified by the present disclosure or embodiment of the invention, there is provided a transferrer such as 8,
Fig. l, mounted for rocking movement in a suitable bearin 9 u on the beatu move-- ment of the lay after call for filling replen ishment. Since these parts are or may be of usual and well-understood construction, further elucidation herein is unnecessary:
The temple 10, which may be of any usual character, is supported from the breast beam 2 in any desired manner, and in the present instance of the invention, is shown as mounted upon the temple bar 11 which has reciprocating movement as usual in the temple stand 12 secured by the usual securing screws or bolts 13 to the breast beam, by means of a supporting bracket 14 or otherwise, the construction being such that on beatup movement of the lay, the temple may have the usual reciprocating movement toward and from th front of the loom.
The temple has associated therewith a thread. cutter for cutting the old thread close to the cloth selvage after a replenishing operation. The temple thread cutter may be of any desired character suitable for this purpose, and in the present instance of the temple thread cutter.
invention, it is shown as formed of the movable cutting member 15, Fig. 3, which, as the lay beats up, is mpved to carry any thread that may be engaged by it against the fixed member 16 mounted on the temple head or pod.
In looms of the filling replenishing type, it is desirable to part the old filling between the cloth selvage or warp threads and the outgoing filling carrier after call for replenishment and to engage and carry the end of: the thread leading from the cloth selvage toward the front of the loom so that it may not be engaged by any of the moving parts and carried into the shed, which wouldmake an objectionable double pick in some cases, extending partway across the fabric. The filling thread parting and clamping means has heretofore been associated with a shuttle feeler which, upon call for filling replenishment, will move from a normal front position to amearward operative position to part the filling thread and clamp the end leading. from the cloth selvage and carry this end frontwardly when the shuttle feeler resumes its normal front. position. Inasmuch as the distance between the cloth selvage and filling thread clamp is less when the clamp is in rear position than when it is in front position, it is evident that the filling end leading from'the cloth selvage to the clamp is liablel tobe broken when the clamp moves to its normal front position to carry the filling end into position to be cut by; the
The presentv JHVG-Iltion contemplates the provision ofv means for producing slack in the thread between the cloth selvage and thread parter and the clamp by drawing from the filling carrier or bobbin to'be ejected a sufficient supply to prevent undue strain upon the filling lead ing from the cloth selvage when the clamp moves to its front position.
Mounted in suitable brackets .17 secured to the loom frame is the usual transverse or rock shaft 18 which is connected to the detecting or feeling mechanism and adapted to be rocked thereby in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, when the filling is found by the detecting or feeling mechanism to be substantially exhausted. The transverse or rock sl aft 18 is of usual character, and under the influence of a suitable spring for holding it in normal position. N
The present invention in its broadest aspects is not necessarilyassociated with or mounted upon the shuttle feeler, but such association has been found in practice well suited to the accomplishment of the results sought and the slack thread producer is therefore illustrated and will be described in the present instance of the invention as mounted upon the shuttle feele'r; Secured to the loom frame by means of suitable bolts 19 is a bracket 20 having an arm 21 projecting rearwardly therefrom on which is mounted the shuttle feeler 22, Figs. 2 and 4, for movement toward and from operative or rearward position. The shuttle feeler 22 may be connected to a sleeve 23 mounted to rock upon a stud 24 secured to the bracket arm 21, the .construction being such that the feeler may be moved upon the stud 21 to project its upper feeling end 25 rearwardly to feel for the shuttle as usual. Extending from the shuttle feeler 22 is a pin 26 which is engaged between yielding members 27 28, connected to the transverse or rock shaft 18 substantially as indicated by full and dotted lines in Figs. 1' and 4, the construction being such that when the loom is running with a working supply of filling in the shuttle, the parts including the shuttle feeler 22, will be maintained in their front or inoperative position as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4; but upon call for replenishment of filling, the transverse or rock shaft 18 is rocked as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, the yielding members 27, 28 will cause the shuttle feeler 22 and parts associated therewith to be moved into operative or rearward position.
The slack thread producer of the present invention may be employed in connection with any usual or desired form of filling thread parter and clamp; but in the present instance of the invention it is shown as associated with a thread parter and clamp of special construction, whereby the slack thread producer is enabled to draw a supply of filling from the outgoing filling carrier and move the thread parter and thread clamp close to their parting and clamping position as the slack thread producer completes its drawing function.
The thread parter in the present instance of the invention comprises a fixed parting member 29 secured to the upper portion of the shuttle feeler 22, the latter being provided as usual, with the end recess 30, Figs. 9, 10 and 11. The movable member of the thread parter consists of the blade 31 pivotally mounted on the shuttle feeler by the pivot stud 32, Figs. 9, 10 and 11, .which is secured to the shuttle feeler. The upper edge portion of the movable parting member 31 is provided with a shoulder 33 which is adapted to be engaged at times by a parting and clamping operating blade 34. The blad 34 is secured in appropriate manner for movement with the transferrer 8, and in the present instance of the invention, the hub of the transferrer 8 has a bridgepiece 35 which carries an arm 36 projecting laterally therefrom. Thearm 36 has a plate 37 to which by means of a screw 38, the blade 34 is adjustably secured, the construction being such that when the transferrer 8 is in its raised or inoperative position as indicated in Fig. 1, the blade 34 is above the shoulder 33 of the movable parting member 31; but when, on call for replenishment of filling, the shuttle feeler has becumoved reanwardly into operating position and the transferrer moves to transfer a filling carrier or bobbin to the shuttle, the blade 34 is held downwardly to bring its end in front of the shoulder 33, substantially as indicated in Fig. 4, so that on frontward movement of the shuttle feeler 22 the shoulder 33 of the movable member of the parter by engagement with the blade 34, operates the movable member of the parter and clamp to part the filling and clamp the end leading from the cloth selvage. The movable member of the parter is provided with a recess 39 through which projects a pin 40 for limiting the movement of the movable parter member upon its pivotal support 31. In order to clamp the filling thread at or about the time it is parted by the operation of the parting members, the movable parting member 31 carries the thread downwardly between itself and a clamping plate 41, Figs. 9, 10 and 11, so that after the end of the filling leading to the shuttle has been cut or parted between the cooperating blades 29 and 31, the end of the filling leading from the cloth selvage will be clamped between the movable parting member 31 and the clamping member 41. These parts may be of usual construction so far as their parting and clamping function is concerned, and may be held in close relation to effect their parting and clamping functions by means of a spring plate 42, Figs. 9, 10 and 11.
Mounted upon the feeler member or associated therewith and disposed between the parting and clamping members and the cloth selvage is the slack thread producer 43 which, in the present instance of the invention is pivotally mounted on the stud 32 projecting from the feeler 22. A spring 44 coiled about the end portion 45 of the stud 32 and having one end projecting under a pin 46 extending from the slack thread producer 43 and its other end secured to a cappiece 47 as indicated in Figs. 9, 10 and 11, acts normally to maintain the filling parter in its inoperative position, substantially as indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 9. The cap-lpiece 47 may be appropriately secured to the end portion 45 of the stud 32 as by means of the cotter pin 48. The slack thread producer 43 has its reanwardly projecting end 49 preferably widened somewhat or made thick so as to act non-injuriously upon the filling thread as the slack thread producer performs its function, and sufficient space is left between the clamping member 41 and the face of the slack thread producer 43 to enable the yarn to be carried downwardly by the end 49 of the slack thread produced temporarily binding the yarn between the two.
The slack thread producer in the present instance of the invention is in the general form of a lever pivotally mounted on the stud 82 carried by the shuttle feeler, the front end portion 49 of the slack thread producer being extended into a position to engage the filling thread when the latter is re ceived into the open end 30 of the shuttle feeler after acall for filling replenishment. The slack thread producer is extended frontwardly from its pivotal support 82 and is provided with a heel member 50 which, when the shuttle feeler is in its rearward position after a call for replenishment, is adapted to be struck by the lay as the latter moves frontwardly to cause the slack thread producer to turn about its pivotal support 32 substantially as indicated in Fig. 4, thereby drawing upon the yarn leading from the filling carrier or bobbin in the shuttle to produce a bight or deviation of the yarn in its course between the end of the shuttle feeler and the selvage of the cloth.
The front portion ofthe slack thread producer is provided with a slot 51 formed in th e arc of a circle, the center of .which is the stud 32 or axis about which the slack thread producer turns. Extending into the slot 51 of the slack thread producer is a pin 52 carried by the frontwardly-projecting end 33 of the movable parting mem ber 31, the extent of the slot 51 and the construction of parts being such that when the heel 50 of the slack thread producer is engaged by the lay, and the slack thread producer is turned about its pivotal support 32 to draw thread from the outgoing filling carrier or bobbin, the end 54: of the slot 51 will engage the pin 52 of the movable parting member and cause that member to move downwardlyclose to the filling thread and ready to act upon it to clamp and part the same. As the shuttle feeler moves front wardl y, the shoulder 33 of the movable-parting :member engages the blade 34 and the parting :and clamping member is given its complete movement to part and clamp the end of thefilling, the slack thread producer 4L3 being-returned to its normal position or turned clockwise, viewing Figs. t and 9, to
provide the-slack filling thread between the clamp and the cloth selvage.
The action of the thread parter and clampand theslack thread producer in the cycle of its: operation is indicated in 5, 6, 7 and 8. In Fig. 5, the shuttle feeler- With'theparts carried thereby, is represented as having been moved to its rearward or operative position, the thread parter and clamping member during such movement to operatingnposition having been fully opened by engagement of the pin 52 with the one wayswitch 55 of usual construction pivotally mounted at 56 upon the stationary support 57, said switch 55 being adapted to swing frontwardly to let the pin pass as the shuttle feeler moves irontwardly to normal position, but being prevented from turning rearwardly by a stop 58 as the shuttle feeler moves out of operative position. With the parts in the position represented by Fig. 5 and theish-uttle b in the box adjacent the replenishing mechanism, the fillingthread'a, Fig. .5, extends through the open slotted end of the feeler and between the members of the parterand clamp and beneath the slack'threadproducer. the lay heats up, the heel 50 of the slack thread producer is engaged and moved frontwardlyby the lay,thereby turning the slack thread producer about its pivot support 82 and causing its end portion d9 to depress the filling thread between the-cloth selvage and thread parter and clamp, or forming a :bight' therein as indicated in Fig. 6, by drawing thread from the outgoing filling carrieror bobbin in the shuttle. During this movement of the slack thread producer, the end '54 of the slot 51 engages the pin 52 of 'the parter and clamp and causes the parterand clamp to turn'downwardly into close proximity to but without acting upon the filling thread a. At this time the blade 84, Fig. 7, will have moved downwardly into engagement with the shoulder .33 of the thread iparte-r, so that as the shuttle feeler starts frontwardly to inoperative position,the thread parter and clamp will'be given a slight movement to complete its parting and'clamping function upon the thread, substantially as indicated in Fig. 7. As the shutter feeler and lay separate further, the spring a e-of the's'lack thread producer 43 will turn the latter clockwise viewing Fig. 8 or upwardly into normal position, thereby freeing .the bight of filling thread drawn from the shuttle and producing suit cient slack for movement of the parter and clamp to their front or normal position for carrying the filling thread into position to be parted by the temple thread cutter.
As hereinbefore noted, the slack thread producer of the present invention may be advantageously employed with any form of thread parter and clamp, and its operating means as herein disclosed obviates parting of the filling thread when, for any reason, the shuttle 'feeler is moved to its rearward or operative position and filling replenishment is not effected. If the parter acted under such'conditions, then'ext pick of the shuttle would fail to lay the filling, but since, in the present form of the parter and clamping member, its parting-and clamping function is not carried into effect except when the transferrer acts, the objectionable mispick'is prevented because the parter fails to be operated.
In practice, especially with ply filling, the filling thread is sometimes liable to get out of the jaws of the shuttle feeler before the parter or cutter has a chance to operate,
therefore it is desirable to have the slack 1 to the side of the shuttle feeler to hold the thread and prevent its displacement fronl parting or cutting position, so that the parter will find the thread, part it and hold the end leading to the cloth selvage.
The action of the slack thread producer in such case is to close down upon the filling, draw sufiicient from the outgoing bobbin, to provide the necessary slack, and temporarily clamp the filling, whereupon the parter acts to part and clamp the filling, and the slack thread producer then releases the filling to provide the desired slack.
