FILLING CLAMPING AND PAR/TING MEANS FOR LOOMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. '7, 1919.
Application filed September 16, 1918. Serial No. 254,237.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, UBALD HEBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, county of Hillsborough, State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in Filling Clamping and Parting Means for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to looms of the type wherein the running filling is replenished prior to complete exhaustion and in which a shuttle feeler is employed to restrain the operation of the replenishing mechanism in case of animproperly boxed shuttle, and in which means are provided for clamping and parting the filling of the abandoned filling carrier, such means being usually supported by, or moving with, the shuttle feeler.
The invention is more particularly concerned with means for effecting the closing action of the filling clampingand parting means.
The object of the invention is to provide a mechanism which shall be simple in construction, easy to adjust, subject to as little wear as possible, and which shall efiect the closing operation, preferably by a yielding action, of the filling clamping and parting means only when the shuttle containing the exhausted or substantially exhausted filling carrier is properly boxed at the transfer end of the loom.
These and other features of the invention will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention in the preferred construction disclosed is shown as embodied in aloom of the well known Northrop type having a rectilinearly movable shuttle feeler of the type disclosed in the patent to'Davis No. 1,091,813 granted March 31, 191 But it is obvious that the invention in its broader aspects may be embodied in various specific forms of construction depending upon the character of filling replenishing loom to which it may be applied.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a transverse section of a portion of the automatic filling replenishing loom having one embodiment of the present invention applied thereto, the lay being shown in full lines on back center and in dotted lines on front center, and only those parts being shown which are necessary to an understanding of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the mechanism shown in Fig. 1 with the shuttle feeler in its rearward position near est the lay and with the filling clamping and parting means opened;
3 is a front elevation partially in vertical cross section of that portion of the loom shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. at is a detail in front elevation of a portion of the lay showing the bunter, positioner and trip mechanism; Fig. 5 is a detail view on a larger scale n side elevation showing the actuator and 1ts support, the View being taken looking toward the left in Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a top plan view partially in horizontal cross-section of the construction shown in Fig. 5.
The lay 1, transferrer 2 to transfer the fresh filling carriers, or in this case the bobbins 3, from the magazine or hopper 4 containing the supply of fresh filling carriers to the lay as into the shuttle 5 when in the box at the transfer end of the loom, the controlling rock shaft 6 journaled on the front of the breast beam 7, are all of a construction familiar in the Northrop type of automatic filling replenishing loom, the construction and operation of which is well known to those skilled in this art.
The remaining mechanism, except that particularly involved in this invention is fully illustrated and described in the beforementioned patent to Davis and therefore needs no extended description.
In the construction illustrated the transferrer 2 is pivotally mounted on a hub 8 in the hopper stand or other fixed portion'of the loom and is provided with a depending arm 9 carrying a rectilinearly movable dog 10. A bunter 11 is rigidly secured to a shaft 12 journaled in a bearing block 13 mounted on the face of the lay 1. WVhen after the call for filling replenishment the shaft 12 is rotated to elevate the-hunter 11 and the lay beats up the hunter striking the dog 10 effects the actuation of the transferrer to transfer a fresh filling carrier 3 from the hopper 4; to the lay, all in a familiar manner.
ried by a supporting arm 15 which depends .Thi's'guide bar 17 is rigidly supported by means of the set screws 18 in a bearing socket 19 formed in one arm 20 of a supporting bracket 21 fitting over and locked to the transferrer hub 8 by a set screw 22.
The shuttle feeler is actuated by a bell crank lever 23 fulcrumed at Men the upper end of a second arm 25 projecting upwardly from the supporting bracket 21. One arm 26 of this bell crank lever is loosely connected toan arm 27 laterally projecting from the sleeve 16 of the shuttle feeler support while the other arm 28 has a pin and slot connection with. a link 29 connected at itslower end to an arm 30 extending rearwardly from the controlling rock shaft 6. A helical spring 31 secured at one end to the bell crank lever 23 and at the opposite end to the upper end of the arm 25 functions to swing the bell crank lever 23 clockwise and thus to move the shuttle feeler support with the shuttle feeler thereo11 rearwardly while at the same time permitt ng the shuttle feeler support to have a swinging or rotary movement on its anis. Normally the parts stand in the positlon shown in Fig. '1. Upon the call for filling replenishment the controlling rock shaft 6 is rotated to elevate the arm 30 against the action of the spring 32 and thus raise the link 29 and permit the spring 31 to function.
This construction and operation is all more fully set forth in the before mentioned patrent to Davis.
an actuator supporting bracket 40 is secured The filling clamping and parting means are preferably movable with and preferably carried by the shuttle feeler. These means include the fixed clamping blade 33 the I fixed cutting blade 34 the movable clampment this car contacting with a pin 39 at.
the end of the guide bar 17 swings the movable blades to open position as shown in Fig. 2. i
A movable and preferably a yielding actuatoris provided for effecting the closing of the filling clamping andparting means and this actuatoris preferably supported from the loom frame independently of the shuttle .feeler and is given its actuating movement by means carried by and movable on the lay.
In the preferred construction illustrated to. some fixed part of the loom such for example as a .rearwardly extcndlng pro ection 41 of the fecler supporting bracket 21 and isshown as heldin place by a bolt 42.
The bracket 40 is preferably ribbed at 43 to fit into a correspondinglygrooved portion of the projection 41 and thus prevent x the bracket from turning. A stub shaft 44 is rigidly mounted by means of the set screw 45 in a horizontally projecting hub 46 of the actuator bracket 40. The actuator 47 is journaled on the stub shaft 44 and comprises a depending arm 48 having a lateral projection 49 at its lower end and a rearwardly projecting arm 50 which is preferably constituted as a thin spring metal blade clamped in place-by a set screw 51. .The
actuator is maintained with the arm or blade 50 in elevated position by a helical spring 52 surrounding the stub shaft in a pocket in the bracket 40 and fastened'at one end to the bracket and at the other end to theactuator. The upward movement of the to effect replenishment are effected by means 7 mounted upon the lay and brought into operative position by the shuttle feeler when the shuttle feeler has indicated that the shuttle is properly boxed at the transfer end of the loom after the call for filling replenishment.
In the construction illustrated the shaft 12- journaled in the bearing block 13 onthe face of the lay has secured thereto in addition to the hunter 11 a positioner 55 and a trip 56. The hunter llcoiiperates with the dog 10 on the transferrer as already described; the positioner 55 cooperates with a heelv 57 depending from the shuttle feeler; and the trip '56 cooperates with the lateral projection 49 of the depending arm 48 of the actuator. A, helical spring 58 on the shaft 12. engaging the position'er 55 at one end and the bearing block at the otherv end acts normally to swing the shaft clockwise until the adjustable stop 59 carried by the hunter contacts with the bearing block and when the parts are in this position there w1ll be no contact of the hunter, positioner or trip with the dog, heel or projection when the lay beats up and consequently no wear of the parts. V
The parts are so constructed'and adjusted that when the filling in. the runningfilling carrier in the shuttle has become exhausted or exhaustedto a predetermined degree and that fact has been indicated by the usual indicating means the controlling rock shaft 6 will be rotated against the action of the spring 32. Thereupon the shuttle feeler with the fillingclamping and parting means carried thereonis moved rearwardly under the action of the spring 31 until the end of the, sleeve 16 engagesthe pin 39. Asthis movement concludes the pin 39 engaging the tail 38 swings the movable members of the clamping and parting means to open position. As the lay now beats up with the shuttle containing the exhausted filllng car rier at the transfer end the shuttle feeler 14 feels for the shuttle and if the shuttle is improperly boxed so that it pro3ects from the box the shuttle contacts with the shuttle feeler and the latter is moved forwardly and there is no operation of the transferrer. If, however, the shuttle is properly boxed as the lay beats up the shuttle feeler passes the end of the shuttle and the positioner 55 comes into contact with the heel 57 of the rearwardly projected shuttle feeler and rocks the shaft 12 against the action of the spring 58 elevating the hunter 11 and trip 56 connected thereto into line with the dog 10 of the transferrer and the lateral projection 49 of the actuator respectively. As the beat up of the lay continues the positioner 55 pushes the shuttle feeler forwardly and the hunter 11 engaging the dog 10 actuates the transferrer in the usual manner to transfer a fresh filling carrier from the hopper into the shuttle and eject the exhausted filling carrier therefrom and the trip 56 coming into contact with the projection 49 of the actuator swings the actuator about its pivot 44 bringing the spring blade arm 50 into contact with the top edge of the movable cutting blade 86 and swinging this blade and the connected movable clamping blade downwardly thus clamping and part: ing the filling extending from the abandoned filling carrier through the eye of the shuttle to the fell of the cloth.- Thereafter the parts under the action of the springs 32, 52 and 58 return to their normal positions as lllustrated in Fig. 1.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.is:
