SHUTTLE-FEELING AND FILLING. CLAMPING AND PARTING MEANS FOR LOOMS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD Ross, a' citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lawrence, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shuttle'Feeling and Filling Clamping and Parting Means for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, 'is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts. Y t This invention relates to improvements in automatic filling replenishing looms in which a fresh filling carrier is automatically transferred to the shuttle box upon substantial exhaustion of the filling in the running shuttle.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide means for preventing the operation of the transferring means when the shuttle has entered the shuttle box too far to be properly positioned for transfer and therebyto avoid a smash or injury to the shuttle or filling carrier.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for preventing the operation of the transferring mechanism when the shuttle is arrested either in advance of or beyond the transferring position and which will permit the operation of the transferring means only when the shuttle is properly positioned for transfer. Another object of the invention is to provide an automatic filling'replenishing loom having means for clamping and partino the filling extending to the shuttle to be lean doned with means controlled byv the position of the boxed shuttle operable only when the shuttle is properly boxed, to clamp and part the filling.
A further object of the invention is to provide means positionedto engage a properly boxed shuttle operable tojactuate the filling clamping and parting mechanism to clamp and art the filling and which will so actuate tfie filling clamping and parting mechanism only when the shuttle isproperly boxed for transfer.
Other objects and features of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings and will be the claims.

The invention in its preferred form is shown in connection with an automatic filling replenishing loom of the well known Northrop type and as that type of loom is well known and familiar to those skilled in the art, no detailed illustration or description, except of those parts immediately concerned with the present invention, is

In this type of loom the frame, one side 1 ofwhich is shown, supports the breast beam 2 upon which is mounted at the transfer particularly pointed out in end or side ofthe loom the stand 3 of the magazine 4 carrying the supply of fresh filling carrlers, one of which, in this case a bobbin 5, 1s indicated in position for transfer.
The lay 6, which in the operation of the 100111 is swung'toward and from the breast beam, is carried upon the upper ends of swords 7 a portion of only one of which is shown. The shuttle 8 is picked back and forth on the top surface of the lay and at the transfer end portion of the lay enters the shuttle box 9 in which it is arrested by the usual binder. t
In this type of loom when the filling in the running shuttle is substantially exhaust ed that fact is indicated by mechanism of a suitable and familiar type which thereupon acts to initiate the filling replenishment or the transfer of a fresh filling carrier from loo becomes broken or the rawhide abutment,

lVhen transfer takes place it is necessary to sever the filling extending from the selvage to the filling carrier to be abandoned. Such severance is commonly effected in two places, first, adjacent the end of the shuttle at the transfer end of the 100m andsecond, adjacentthe selvage of the cloth. For the former purpose a mechanism is provided known as the filling clamping and parting mechanism because it both clamps the filling and parts it close to the shuttle and then carries it forward so asto bring it into the field of action of the usual temple thread cutter which severs it closely adjacent to the selvage of the cloth.
The filling clamping and parting mechanism is illustrated herein as of the familiar form and comprises relatively fixedcutting and clampingblades. 10 and 11, the latter desirably being'of fibre composition, and an intermediate relatively movable or pivoted blade 12 having its edge, which cooperates; with the clamping blade 11, round ed in such a manner as-not to sever the fill- These blades are mounted upon a suitable support which is movable toward and'from the lay and in. the illustrative embodiment of the invention, as is usual, the shuttle feeler 13, which is pivotally mounted upon the frame, is utilized. for that purpose. The movable blade 12 is provided with. a laterally extending pin 14 and a forwardly depending tail 15, the latter of which extends into the path of the lay. The movable blade is limited in its movement by a pin 16 which is mounted in the support or shuttle feeler and extends through an aperture 17 formed therein. In normal position the parts stand as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 with the blades of the filling clamping and parting mechanism closed.
hen in. the course'of the operation of the loom the running filling becomes substantially exhausted and the mechanism for initiating the filling replenishment has been set in operation the controller shaft 18, extending across the front of the loom, is rocked to raise the rearwardly projecting arm 19. This arm being connected. to the shuttle feeler 13 swings the shuttle feeler rearwardly carrying with it the filling clamping and parting mechanism and moving the same to filling-receiving position. As the shuttle feeler swings rearwardly the pin 14, extending from the movable blade 12, rides against the lower face of the switch cam 20, which is pivotedat 21 on a bracket 22, and thus moves the movable blade to open position.
If theshuttle has entered the box at the transfer end of the loom sufliciently the nose of the shuttle feeler passes in front of the shuttle and the dog 23 which is pivoted to the downwardly projecting arm 24 of the transferrer 25, which is pivotally mounted upon astud 26 projecting fromthehopper stand, is swung upwardly so as to stand in the path of the transferrer hunter-27 of the lay. Asthe lay beats up the transferrer bunter' 27 striking the dog 23 causes the transferrer 25 to swing downwardly and drive the fresh fillingcarrier 5, which is-in position for transfer, into the boxed shuttle 8 on the lay therebeneath and discharge from the shuttle the substantially exhausted filling carrier. About-the same time the lay engages the depending tail 15 of=the movableblade 11 and swings it into closed position, thus clamping and parting the filling end close to the nose of the shuttle. At the conclusion of the transferring operation the shuttle feeler swings forwardly and the pin 14 swings the switch cam 20 forwardly and passesbeneath it.- Thezfilling'end is, therefore, carried forwardly and thus the filling is brought into the path of the usual temple thread cutter at the selvage where it is again severed.
The mechanisms heretofore described may beland are, in the present illustrative embodiment of the invention, those ofthe wellknown usual Northrop typerof loom.
The present invention contemplates the provision, first, of means operable to'prevent the operation of the transferring means when theshuttle has entered the shuttle-box too far to be positioned for transfer, as for example, when a picker stick is broken or the. surface upon the picker stick, which is engaged by the shuttle, has become so badly worn as to permit the shuttle to-pass beyond the proper transferring position, and sec ond, the provision of means operable by engagement with a properly positioned shuttle to actuate the movable blade of the filling clamping and parting mechanism to clamp and part the filling.
In the present embodiment of the invention, in which the filling clamping and parting mechanism is carried by the head of the shuttle feeler, both of these functions are attained by a relatively simple mechanism Whichcan be readily applied to a usual type of shuttle feeler. It will, however,be under stood that the mechanisms for accomplishing the respective purposes may be usedseparately in constructions in which the filling clamping and parting, mechanism is carried by a support other than the shuttle feeler.
The preferred means for preventing the operation of the transferring means, which is illustrated herein, comprises a supplemental feeler which is mounted upon, and movable relatively to, the headof the shuttle feeler 13 and controls the position of a member or dog which normally lies in the path of the lay during its beat-up and upon engagement with a properly boxed shuttle and movement relatively to the shuttle feeler removes the member or dog from the path of the lay.
As illustrated herein the supplemental feeler comprises a feeler slide orplate 28 having a longitudinal slot 29 which spans a collar or roll 30 upon the stud 16 which limitsthe'movement of the movable blade 12 of the filling clamping and parting mechanism and also spans the nut 31 upon the end of the stud or screw 32 upon which the movable blade of the filling clamping and parting mechanism is pivotally mounted.
The feeler slide 28 is provided at its rear end with a laterally extending 'fiange 33 which is positioned to engage the tip of a properly boxed shuttle. A helical spring 34:, which preferably is secured at one end to the stud 16 and at its opposite end to a laterally extending flange 35 upon the end of the supplemental feeler slide 28, serves nor mally to retain the supplemental feeler in extended position as illustrated in Fig. 2. The supplemental feeler is provided with an inclined or cam surface 36 which engages beneath a shoulder. 37 of a dog 38 which desirably is mounted in a groove extending transversely of the head of the shuttle feeler 13 and extends below the shuttle feeler head a sufficient distance to lie in the path of the lay 6 during its beat-up. The lower end of the dog 38 desirably has a laterally extending lug 39 which underlies the supplemental feeler 28 and limits the upward movement of the dog thereby retaining it from displacement.
In the operation of the loom the usual shuttle feeler upon call for transfer enters the shuttle box and if the shuttle is arrested in advance of transferring position engages theshuttle before the lay has reached transferring position and upon such engagement is moved forwardly by the shuttle in the usual manner to prevent the action of the transferring means. If the shuttle is 'properly boxed the shuttle feeler 13 passes by the tip of the shuttle, but the end or flange. 33v
of the supplemental feeler engages the tip of the shuttle and is moved forwardly, thereby causing the cam' surface 36 to raise the dog 38 out of the path of the lay so that the shuttle feeler is not moved forwardly and the action of the transferring means is permitted. If, however, the shuttle enters the box too far to be properly positioned for transfer the end or flange 33 of the supplemental feeler will not be engaged by the shuttle tip and the lay will engage the dog 38 as it approaches its final beat-up position, thereby forcing the shuttle feeler forwardly as a whole and thereby preventing transfer in the usual manner.
By reason of this construction, therefore,
means are provided which will prevent the operation of the transferring means either when the shuttle is arrested in advance of transferring position or when the shuttle has entered the box too far to be properly positioned for transfer.
In the preferred construction illustrated herein the supplemental shuttle feeler is also utilized to actuate the filling clamping and parting mechanism to clamp and part the filling when the supplemental feeler engages a properly positioned shuttle. This is accomplished by providing the supplemental feeler 28 with an arm 10 which preferably is integral with the supplemental feeler and extends downwardly, thence laterally below the feeler head and across the position of the rear face of the depending tail 15 of the movable cutter blade. I lVhen, therefore, the end 33 of the supplemental feeler 28 engages the tip of a properly positioned shuttle, as illustrated in Fig 4, the
supplemental feeler is forced forwardly relatively to the shuttle feeler head and first raises the dog out of the path 'of the lay to permit the operation of the transferring means and upon further beat-up of the lay the arm 40 engages the downwardly extending tail 15 of the movable cutter blade and during the remaining movement of the supplemental feeler rocks the movable cutter blade about its pivotto clamp and part the filling.
If the filling clamping and parting mechanism is mounted upon a support other than the shuttle feeler similar means may be provided for actuating the filling clamping and parting mechanism by engagement with a properly boxed shuttle. It will, therefore, be understood that while the mechanism for preventing the operation of the transferring .means, when the shuttle enters the shuttle box too far to be properly positioned for transfer, and the mechanism for actuating the filling clamping and parting mechanism by engagement with the shuttle, are combined in a single structure they are capable of independent use upon loom constructions in which the filling clamping and parting mechanism is carried by a support other than'the shuttle feeler.
It will also be understood that the present embodiment of the invention is ofan illustrative character and that various changes in form, construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means fortransferring a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle is boxed for transfer, a shuttle feeler and a co-operating supplemental feeler movable relatively to and transversely of the lay and operable respectively to prevent the operation of the transferring means when the boxed shuttle is arrested in advance of transferring position and when arrested beyond proper transferring position.
2. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means for transferring a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle is boxed for transfer, a shuttle feeler, acting to feel for the shuttle when boxed for transfer, and operable upon engagement with an improperly boxed shuttle during its feeling action to prevent transfer supplemental means carried by said shuttle feeler and operable in consonance with said shuttle feeler positioned to engage a shuttle properly positioned for transfer and acting when so engaged to permit the operation of the transferringmeans, but acting when not so engaged to prevent the operation of the transferring means.
3. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means for transferring a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle is boxed for transfer. a shuttle feeler, acting to feel for the shuttle when boxed for transfer, and operable upon engagement with an improperly boxed shuttle during its feeling action to prevent transfer, a. supplemental feeling member mounted upon said shuttle feeler movable relatively thereto and positioned to engage a shuttle properly positioned for transfer and means controlled by said supplemental feeler for preventing the operation of the transferring means when the shuttle is not engaged by said supplemental feeler.
4. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means for transferrin a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle is boxed for transfer, a shuttle feeler, acting to feel for the shuttle when boxed for transfer, and operable upon engagement with an improperly boxed shuttle during its feeling action to prevent transfer, a dog on said shuttle feeler normally extending into the path of the lay and acting when engaged by the lay to cause said shuttle feeler to prevent the operation of the transferring means and a supplemental feeler, mounted upon said shuttle feeler, relatively movable thereto and operable upon engagement with a properly positioned shuttle to remove said dog from the path of the lay.
5. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means for transferring a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle is. boxed for transfer, a shuttle feeler, acting to feel for the shuttle when boxed for transfer, and operable upon engagement with an improperly boxed shuttle during its feeling action to prevent transfer, a dog, slidably mounted upon and movable transversely of .the shuttle feeler head, extending normally into the path of the lay and acting when engaged by the lay to cause the shuttle feeler to prevent the operation of the transferring means, a supplemental feeler, slidably mounted upon said shuttle feeler head, movable longitudinally thereof and positioned to engage the tip of a shuttle properly positioned for transfer and means operable by the sliding movement of said supplemental feeler when engaged by the shuttle to raise said dog from lay-engaging position and thereby permit the actuation of the transferring means.
6. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means.
for transferring a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle is boxed for transfer, a shuttle feeler having filling clamping and parting mechanism movable toward and from the lay and means carried by said shuttle feeler and controlled by the position of the boxed shuttle and acting only when the shuttle is properly boxed to effect the actuation of the filling clamping and parting mechanism to clamp and part the filling.
7. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means for transferring a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle is boxed for transfer, a shuttle feeler having filling comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means 1 for transferring a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle is boxed for transfer, a shuttle feeler movable toward and from the lay, filling clamping and parting mechanism mounted thereupon and means ion Ill)
operable by engagement with the shuttle only when properly boxed for transfer to actuate said filling clamping and part ng means to clamp and part the filling.
9. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means for transferring a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle is boxed for transfer, a shuttle feeler movable toward and from the lay, filling clamping and parting mechanism mounted thereupon, a supplemental feeler slidably mounted upon said shuttle feeler and positioned to engage the shuttle when properly boxed for transfer and to be moved relatively to said shuttle feeler when so engaged and means operable by said supplemental feeler upon such rela' tive movement to actuate the filling clamping and parting mechanism to clamp and part the filling.
10. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means for transferring a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle is boxed for transfer, a shuttle feeler having means operable respectively to prevent the operation of the transferring means either when the shuttle is arrested in advance of or beyond proper transferring position, filling clamping and parting means and means operable only by engagement with a properly boxed shuttle to permit transfer and also to actuate the filling clamping and part ing means.
11. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means for transferring a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle is boxed for transfer, a shuttle feeler acting to feel for the shuttle when boxed for transfer and operable upon engagement with an improperly boxed shuttle to prevent transfer, a dog on said shuttle feeler normally extending into the path of the lay and acting when engaged by the lay to cause said shuttle feeler to prevent the operation of the transferring means, filling clamping and parting mechanism mounted upon said shuttle feeler, a supplemental feeler mounted upon said shuttle feeler and movable relatively thereto, operable upon engagement with a properly boxed shuttle to remove said dog from the path of the lay and thereafter to actuate said filling clamping and parting mechanism to clamp and part the filling.
12. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having a shuttle box, means for transferring a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle box when the shuttle isboxed for transfer, a shuttle feeler acting to feel for the shuttle when boxed for transfer and operable upon engagement with an improperly boxed shuttle to prevent transfer, a dog slidably mounted upon and movable transversely of the shuttle feeler head extending normally into the path of the lay and acting when engaged by the lay to cause the shuttle feeler to prevent the operation of the transferring means, filling clamping and parting mechanism mounted upon said shuttle feeler head, a supplemental feeler, slidably mounted upon said shuttle feeler head, movable longitudinally thereof and positioned to engage the tip of a shuttle properly positioned for transfer, said supplemental feeler having means operable first to remove said dog from the path of the lay and thereafter to actuate the filling clamping and parting mechanism.
