ALFRED E. STAFFORD, or HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR no RATION', or HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPQRATIONOF DRAPER coerc- MAINE,
FILLING CLAMPING AND PARTING MECHANISM FOR LOOMS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED E. STAFFORD,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented van Improvement in Filling Clamping and Parting Mechanism for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a, specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts. i
This invention relates to. filling clamping and parting mechanism for automaticfilb ing replenishing looms. In such looms wherein the running filling is replenished prior to complete exhaustion the old or spent filling is parted between the cloth and the shuttle by parting means, usually mounted on a swinging support or arm, generally arranged to. perform the function of, a shuttle feeler. The mechanism generally includes a filling clamping and parting. instrun'ientality or. instrumentalities which are carried bodily by the movable or swing ing support such as the shuttle feeler toward and from the lay and it is necessary to provide means for opening the filling clamping and parting instrumentality' after its actuation.
It is the particular object of thepresent means for thus opening the filling clamping and parting instrumentality or instrumentalities preferably during the rearward movement or the movement toward the lay.
It is the further object of the present invention to provide such a means which shall be gravity controlled, which shall be subjected to as little friction as possible, and which shall be certain and efiicient in. its action.
The nature and object of the invention will appear more fully from the aceompanyingdescription and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims. p
The invention in its preferred form is conveniently illustrated in connection with the Well known Northrop type of automatic filling replenishing loom and in connection with a filling clamping and parting means carried by a swinging shuttle feeler such disclosed in the patent to Davis No. 1,08%,878 granted January 20, 191a.

matic filling replenishing loom together with. a'filling clamping and parting means of the type referred to as is necessary to a disclosure of the invention. v
In the drawings, t
Figure 1 is a transverse section of a portion of the loom with a preferred embodiment of, the present invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 isa detail in cross section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1-; i
Fig. 3 is a Side elevation partially in transverse cross section of the construction shown in Fig. 2,. the cross section being taken on the line 33 of said figure.
The general construction and operation of this type of loom and this type of shuttle feeler and filling clamping. and parting. means being well known. and familiar and further being fully disclosed in the aforesaid patent to Davis needs no extended description. 5
Upon the call for filling replenishment the controller shaft 1 is rocked raising the arm 2 and thereby\swingi-ng the shuttle feeler 3 rearwardly or toward the lay 4 about its pivot 5. .If the shuttle 6 is properly boxed v the nose of the feeler 3 passesinfront of the shuttle which is thenloca te'd in the box a the transfer side of the loom. 1 a
Thefilling clamping and parting means are carried by the shuttle feeler The plate 7 is fixed. or immovable:relativelyto the shuttle feeler and constitutes the fixed member of the filling clamp. .The recessed end 8 of the shuttle feeler formsthe fixed mem ber of the parting means. Between these two fixed members is pivotally mounted'at 9 upon the shuttle feeler a blade 10 which in cooperation with the recessed end 801 the shuttle feeler and the plate 7 serves top'art and clamp the abandoned filling extending. from the shuttle to the cloth and after the filling has thus been parted and clamped to carry the severed end upon the forward swinging movement of the shuttle feeler' into the path of; the usual-temple thread cutter.
The filling parting and clamping means must therefore-be in open. position when the shuttle feeler swings rearwardly to engage the filling. The closing action maybe ef fected in any suitable manner'and in the construction illustrated is efi'ected by the striker 11 being brought into the path of the cam shapedupper edge 12 of the movable Jade upon and through the action at the ransferring' means all as fully disclosed in he before mentioned patent to ,Davis.
The present invention has to do with neans for insuring the opening of the ,fill 'ng clamping and parting means, In the :ohstruction illustrated an upwardly projecting bracket 13 is bolted at 14 to the loom frame and has an arm 15 projecting d wn- \vardly and bracing it against the frame. The bracket 13- atits upper end is provided with a laterally projecting stud 16 on which is pivotally mounted the hub 17 of a catch 18'. This catch at the bottom'is provided with a bevel or cam surface 19 cooperating with a pin20 projecting laterallyfrom the mustnot be moved or otherwise the filling; .7 clamping and parting means would be opened releasing the filling end before it was brought into the path of the temple thread cutter and consequently provision is made for allowing the pin 20 to swing the catch 18 forwardly out of the way. After the pin 20 has passed the catch 18 on its forward movement the catch must return to normal positlOIl ready for action upon the next rea1" ward movement of the shuttle fecler.
T o secure these results the bracket 13ca nd the catch 18 are provided with cooperating steps which act to limit the rearward movementof the catch to a position at which;- ,upon the rearward movement of the filling clamping and parting means the catch will act to move the movable vmember to open p0- sitionl and which will act to limit the for Ward movement of thiscatch to a position from which it will return rearwardly by gravity to its normal position and thus enable the catch upon the forward movement of the filling clamping and parting means to "yield and allow the passage of the filling clamping-and parting means therepast.
Such an arrangement .of cooperating stops is illustrated in the preferred form as a stop 21 projecting .latcrally from the bracket 13'beneaththe hub 17 and a pair of stops 22 and 23 projecting radially from the hub 17 and separated by an angle of substantially 90.
When the catch hangs by gravity in normal position the stop 22 will be in front of or in contact with the stop 21.
Hence as the shuttle feeler swings rearwa'rdly to operative position the catch 18 will be [held by the cooperation of the stops lid 22 and #21 to cause the eamnnng opening ac tion of the lower edge 19 of the catch on the pin 20. \Vhen the shuttle feeler swings forwardly carrying the parted and clamped filling end the pin 20 striking the rear face of the catch will swing it forwardly to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3 and as the weight of the catch is slight the catch ill swing rear-lily without affecting the position of the filling clamping and parting means. When the filling clamping and parting means has swung forwardly sufficiently for the pin-20 to clear the catch 18 the catch will then swing by gravity and with the minimum friction to its normal position. By'this invention it is impossible for the catch to be swung forwardly beyond a position from which it cannot readily swing by gravity back to normal position because the stop 23 restricts the for ward mvinging movement of the catch by contacting with the stop 21. Thus the catch cannot by momentum or by the jarring of the loom swing forwardly beyond a position from which i will not at once return by gravity to its normal position. The invention thus eliminates the use of any spring which may bind, become broken or gct out of 01 l(*l',tllllh' renders certain the action of 1 the catch, controls'thc action of the catch by gravity, and insures the catch always returnijng to and standing in normal position after the forward passage of the shuttle fcclcr with the filling clamping and parting means so as always to be ready for 00- operativc actionuwvith the pin 20 to open the filling clamping and parting means upon its rearward movement.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by i Letters Patent is:
members to clamp and part the filling, a
catch pivotally mounted above the path of said means, and cooperating stops on the catch and its supportacting to limit the rearward movement of said catch to a position at which upon the rearward move ment of said means the catch will act to move the movable member to open position and acting to limit the forward movement of said catch toa position from which il will return rcarwardly by gravity to normal position, thus enabling the catch upon thc forward movement of said means to yield to al low the passage thereof thercpast.
2. An automatic filling replenishing loom having the construction defined in claim 1 in which the said cooperating stops are located one on the support. for the catch and two on the catch adapted to cooperate with the front and rear of the stop on the support.
3. In an automatic filling replenishing loom a lay, a filling clamping and parting means movable toward and from the lay comprising cooperating movable and fixed members to clamp and part the filling, a catch pivotally mounted above the path of said means, a pair of stops on the catch separated from each other by an angle of about ninety degrees, a stop on the support for the catch located between the stops on the catch, the said stops positioned and cooperating to limit the rearward movement of said catch to a position at which upon the rearward movement of said means, the catch will act to move the movable member to open position and to limit the forward movement of said catch to a position from which it will return rearwardly by gravity to normal position thus enabling the catch upon the forward movement of said means to yield to allow the passage thereof there ast.
In testimony whereot, I have signe my name to this specification.
