IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,1 33, dated June 29, 1875; application filed April 16, 1875. i

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARSHALL TURLEY, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and in the State of. Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in trusses, to be applied to the treatment of hernia, or rupture, its object being to render the same more comfortable and easy to the wearer than the trusses hitherto in use, which interfere with the movements and cause uneasiness when in position.

The invention consists in a pad or cushion covered with sponge, in combination with an improved conical spiral spring, provided with a peculiar loop at one end,to be attached to a belt to fasten around the person of the wearer, the coils of said spring, when pressed together, lying spirally Within each other in the same plane, without incommoding the wearer or occupying unnecessary space under the clothing.

In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a per spective View of my improved truss, and Fig. 2 detached views of the spring and pad.

The letter A represents a belt constructed in any convenient manner of suitable material. B represents aspiral spring, core-wound, one end of which is bent diametrically across the last turn of the spring and fastened, forming a D-shaped loop, which is passed over the belt in order to secure the spring to the belt. The other end of the spring is secured to the pad 0 in any convenient manner, by preference, however, by means of a screw inserted loosely through a loop formed on the end of the spring for the purpose. The pad is in the shape of a concavo-convex disk with rounded edges to prevent irritation to the wearer. The smaller end of the spring sets into the concave side. This construction allows the pad to play in all directions, according to the motions of the wearer, without danger of slipping and giving no uneasiness.

When pressure is applied to the spring, the coils pack within the other in the same plane, thus taking up no unnecessary room under the clothing of the wearer. In order to readily clean the pad, and at the same time provide a yielding bearing-face for the same, a cushion of sponge is applied to the surface of the same, in any convenient manner. E represents a thigh-strap attached to one end of the belt, and provided with a buckle for adjustment.

The belt is provided with the usual attachments for securing the same to the person, and also with two loops, F F, for holding the folded portions closely together.

The operation and method of applying the truss will be readily understood without further description.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The conical spiral spring B, having a concave-convex pad, covered with sponge, secured to one end as described, the other end being formed into a Dshapcd loop, as set forth, by means of which the pad may be attached to the belt A, and slide freely on the same, substantiall y as and for the purposes herein specified.
