SHOULDER BRAGB. I No. 370,055. I Patented Sept. 20, 1887.
Suva W601 07zrstmw J W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTINA J. HALEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHOULDER-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,055, dated September 20, 1887.
Application filed July 29, 1887. Serial No. 245,615. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTINA J. HALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoulder-Braces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in shoulder-braces; and it consistsin the constrnc tion and arrangement of the parts of the same, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of niy invention is to provide a shoulder-brace which will bar e bearing upon the shoulders alone, and thereby act to draw them up in their proper position without the use of any inconvenient straps surrounding the remaining portion of the body. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the'accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved form of brace. Fig. 2 is a top plan view .thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of another form of the brace.
A indicates a strip of webbing, preferably elastic, which is crossed at its central portion to form two loops, a a, at each end, which are adapted to beplaced over the shoulders. At the point of crossing, a, a metallic slide, B, is mounted, and allows of an adjustment of the parts, either by the action of the shoulders or before being applied in connection therewith. Each of the loops a is also provided with an adjusting-slide, c, which acts conjointly with a loop, 0, secured to the ends of the webbing A, and by means of which anysize of loop can be obtained for different sizes and forms of shoulders, or to tighten the loops around the shoulders of the wearer, if so desired. On the inner side of each of the loops a pad, D, is secured, which is constructed of chamois-skin or other analogous material, and irritation and consequent inconvenience at the part of the shoulder engaged by the side loops, (1, is avoided.
In Fig. 3 a different form of the brace is shown.- In this instance but one loop, a, is formed,
which is adapted to be adjusted over the one shoulder, while the elongated loop formed by the remaining web is passed over the opposite shoulder, which may be deformed or stooped and irregular with relation to the other, and may be braced and straightened. A central slide is also used in this construction, and the single loop is made adjustable in a manner similar to that hereinbefore described.
The webbing of the brace in either form is crossed in such a manner as to substantially form the figure 8, and at the point of intersection the slide Bis mounted and acts as hereinbefore set forth. The webbing may be either elastic or non-elastic, as may be desired and considered applicable.
The brace is comfortable and at the same time efficient in its application, and is especially intended for use by school-children to straighten and brace stooping shoulders.
The novelty and utility of my improved brace being obviously apparent and appreciable, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.
Having .thus described my invention, I claim- 1. Asl1oulder -brace constructed ot'a piece of suitable webbing crossed at the center to form a figure 8, thereby providing two adjustingloops, 0, to encircle the arms only, an adjusting device in the loops (1, and another adjusting'device at the point of intersection or crossing of the strap, as set forth.
2. The improved shoulder-brace herein de scribed and shown, composed of a strip of suitable webbing crossed at the center to form the loops at a, an adjusting device at the point of intersection or crossing of the strip, independent adjusting devices mountcd on the loops a, and the pads D, secured on the inner side of the strip in the ends of the said loops, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto a-ffixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTINA J. HALEY.
