UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. HANBURY AND CHARLES H. CLIFTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.; SAID CLIFTON ASSIGNOR TO SAID HANBURY.
' COMBINED SHOULDER-BRACE AND SUSPEND EH8.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,696, dated May 9, 18182.
7 Application filed March 3, 1889.. (Model) To all whom it may concern: 7 Be it known that we, JOHN D. HANBURY and CHARLES H. CLIFTON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Combined Shoulder-Brace and Suspenders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. The object of our invention is to provide new and improved suspenders for pants or un- 1o derskirts, whichsuspenders also serve as shoultier-braces to keep the body erect and expand the chest.
- The invention consists in a combined shoulder-brace and suspenders, formed of two supx porting bands or straps united by two back bands or straps and provided with arm bands or straps, whereby the pants or skirts are supported and the body is held erect and the chest expanded.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figurel is a perspective rear view of our 2 5 improved combined suspenders and shoulder,
3 5 bands B, which bands B are adapted to pass under the arms of the wearer, these bands or straps B forming arm-loops with the upper parts of the bands or straps A, as shown. Straps or hands C, provided with a buckle, D,-
o or other adjusting device, are attached at their outer ends to the bands or straps A at the same places at which the arm bands or straps B are attached to the rear parts of these bands or straps An A short distance from the ends of the arm bands or straps 13, attached to the rear parts of the bands or straps A, these arm bands or straps B are connected by bands or straps E, provided with a buckle, F, or other suitable adjusting device. The buckle D of the bands C is near one strap or band, A, and 0 the buckle F of the straps E is near the other strap or hand, F, so that the tensions of the bands 0 and IE will be in opposite directions. The bands or straps A are provided with buckles G or other adjusting devices. Ordinary suspenderstraps, H, or safety-hooks J, can be attached to the ends of the bands or straps H for holding the pants or skirts.
1n wearingthe combined shoulder-brace and suspenders the arms are passed through the arm-loops formed by the straps or bands 13, and thebands or strapsvC and E pass over the back and can be adjusted shorter or longer, as may be required, by means of the buckles D and F.
The combined shoulder-brace and! suspenders supports pants or skirts in the same man nor as ordinary suspenders and at the same time holds the body erect, the chest expanded, and prevents stooping or bending of the upper part of the body, for if the upper part of the body is bent forward the tension on the lowerbands, E, is increased and presses against the lower part or middle of the back, pressing the same forward, and thus causing the body to be held erect.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- As an article of manufacture, a combined 8c shoulder-brace and suspenders consisting of the supporting-straps A, the arm-strapsB, the adjustable transverse strap C,attached to the supporting-straps, and the adjustable transverse strap E, attached to the arm-straps, suh- 8 5 stantially as herein shown and described.
