Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. STIOKNEY, OF ST. LOUIS, ASSIGNOR TO V. B. FORDEN, OF SPRING- FIELD, MISSOURI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,378, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed April 17, 1890- Sen'al No. 348,349. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY C. STIOKNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Truss, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to trusses for the supports of hernias or ruptures, and is especially intended as an improvement upon a patent granted me April 24, 1888, No. 881,7 27.
The objects and advantages of the invention, together with the novel features thereof, will hereinafter appear, and be particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a truss constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the band;
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 represents the body-band, which, for a purpose hereinafter apparent, I form polygonal, the dividing-angles, however, not being too abrupt.
2 represents two corresponding pairs of collars, of a size to loosely fit the body-band, and made adjustable thereupon by means of set-screws 3, passed through the collar and terminating upon the band. The efficiency of the screws for maintaining the collars in position upon the band, it will be observed, are greatly increased by reason of the polygonal-shaped band. Each one of the pairs of collars 2 receives the extremity of a springwire 4, which wire is bent at its middle to form a central elongated loop 5, the terminals at each side of the loop being uniformly coiled about the band, as at 6.
7 represents the two front pads, which maybe of any ordinary shape or construction, in the backs of which are inserted set-screws 8, the shanks or bodies of which each pass through one of the elongated loops, and the head of the screw bears upon the opposite terminals, forming said loop. By loosening the screws it is apparent that the pads may be adjusted within the loops. The action of the springloops is exactly the same as that of the springpressed arms illustrated, described, and
claimed in the patent herein referred to; but by the construction described I am enabled to omit said arms and mount the pads directly in the loops. By disposing the coil of the spring at each side of the pad I secure a more powerful resistance than in the patent mentioned, and this, too, with a lesser amount of spring. The ends of the body-band 1 terminate in reduced tenons 9, which are adapted to be received by sockets 10, formed in the inner ends of opposite couplings 11, which at their outer ends terminate in transverse loops 12, through which passes the usual flexible body-strap 13. Set-screws 14 are inserted in the hollow sockets in the ends of the couplings, which screws bear upon the reduced tenons of the body-band 1. By the construction described it is apparent that the collars or springs may be readily removed for clean ing, renewal of broken springs, or other impaired parts.
Like my previous patent referred to, it will be readily seen that the pads are capable of lateral adjustment, as the collars may be moved to either side; also, that the pads themselves are capable of lateral, vertical, and rotary adjustment, thus enabling them to be adjusted to the location of the diseased part of the wearer. By a proper rotary adjustment of the collars the pressuret-of the pads upward upon the hernia or rupture can be readily and most effectually regulated.
Having described my invention, what claim is- The combination, with the body-band, of the opposite couplings consisting of the loops 12, connected to the ends of the band, and the inwardly-disposed sockets 10, provided with screws 14, the band-section 1, reduced at its ends and entered in said sockets, and pads secured to the said section 1, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY O. STIOKNEY.
