SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,083, dated November 4, 1890.

Application filed April 12, 1890. Serial No. 347,633. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MATHEW WIsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to trusses and aims to provide a truss that will dispense with back-pressure pads, and which will not exert any pressure on the spinal column, and which will adapt itself to every variety of movement of the wearer.

A furtherobject of the invention is to dispense with pistons or guide-rods of any kind between the pad and the body-band and to reduce the number of parts to a minimum.

The improvement consists of the novel features which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a truss embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section through the pad and band on the line X X, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the pad.

My improved truss may be briefly described as consisting mainly of a metallic band A, made of medium oil-tempered steel, made to fit the body around the hips, and open in back, not extending so far as to come in contact with spinal column, thus doing away with any pressure-pads behind, having in fronta drop or loop extending across the front of body, giving perfect and easy movement of the body, the band from drop or loop back to be covered by leather, chamois, or other suitable material, and fastened behind with a strap and buckle, and the drop or loop to be made to extend centrally over the hernia. The pressure-pads B for hernia are attached to this drop or loop by means of links or cuffs O 011 band. The links or cuffs are made so that they can be moved to any position required, and are held to position by means of set-screws b, which pass through outside of link or cuff and have bearing on band, the set-screws 1) coming even or flush with surface of links, leaving no projection for clothing to catch upon, the links or cuffsO clamping on inside the foot of springs D, connected with pressure-pads E, which holds hernia to its proper place.

The pad E consists of hard rubber, or any metallic substance, which is made hollow or concavo-convex.

Around outer edge of cavity there is a groove 6 in pad which holds bottom coil of the coneshaped spiral spring D, which has a foot cl on opposite end, which rests against inside of band through link or cuff held in place by means of set-screw and link heretofore described, this spring being fastened to pad by being sprung into aforesaid groove 6 in pad, thus making all bearing or pressure from spring on outer edge of pad. The advantage of this is, there are no guides or pistons required connecting pad with spring or band, the spiral spring being made in cone shape and attached to pad in this way, so that as pressure comes on pads the spring will close down into cavity in pad. The footof spring, being centrally attached to the link or cuff, holds pad so that it allows no chance of displacement of hernia.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. The combination, with a concavo-convex truss-pad having annular groove 6 around the outer edge of cavity, as shown, of a conical spring having its base-coil sprung into the said groove 6, substantially as described.

2. The hereinbefore-specified truss, composed of the body-band of tempered steel having a drop loop in its front side and having a space between its rear ends, the cufi on the depressed part of the band, the bindingscrew for holding the cuff on the band, the pad having recess in its rear side and having a groove in the sides of the recess, and the cone-shaped spring having its last coil sprung in the said groove and having a foot which is inserted in the cuff between it and the band, substantially as described.
