A. D. SMITH.
TRUSS.
No. 436,270. Patented Sept. 9, 1890.
W/TNE /N VENTOH BY H ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO D. SMITH, OF NEW WOODSTOOK, NEW YORK.
TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,270, dated September 9, 1890.
Application filed March 12, 1890. Serial No. 343,599. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO D. SMITH, of New Woodstock, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had 'to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved truss, showing it in an inverted position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the truss-pad and its support, and Fig. 3 is an edge View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a truss having a pad which will act like the ends of the fingers in holding the hernial protrusion in place.
My invention consists in the combination, with a curved spring, of an adjustable springpressed pad adapted to produce an inward and an upward pressure; also, in the combination, with the curved supporting-spring, of a on rved slide for adjusting the pressure of the spring.
To one end of the spring A is attached a plate B, to which is secured a round bar 0 by means of screws a passing through the plate and into the bar. Between the bar 0 and plate B and upon the screws 0. are placed washers b. The bar 0 is flattened at its ends to give it a firm bearing.
Upon the bar 0 are wound two spiral springs c in opposite directions. The arms 61 of the springs enter the wooden body e of the pad D through a slot f, formed in the plate g, attached to the back of the pad-body by means of screws. The arms h of the springs 0 extend underneath the clip 1;, secured to the angles toward the plate B to form a guide I neither the curved body-spring nor the strap forms any part of my invention, except in so far as they enter into combination with other parts.
Upon the body-spring A is placed the curved slide G, which is formed with less curvature than the side portions of the spring. This slide G is preferably formed integrally in a single casting, with side bars m extending along the edges of the body-spring A, with cross-pieces n connecting the said portions of the side bars and extending across the inner face of the body-spring, and a central crosspiece 0 extending across the outer face of the body-spring. The curved slide G is adj usted on the body-spring A by first straightening the spring, and then moving the slide along to a position where it will restrain the body-spring and thus regulate the pressure of the spring upon the body.
In the present case I have shown the pad D in circular form, with its free edge thicker than its pivoted edge; but I do not limit or confine myself to this particular construction, as the pad may be modified in various ways, both in form and material, to adapt it to different cases. The back pad E may also be varied in form or material, or both. The spring is a cross body-spring that is,when thehernia is on the'right side the spring will be put on the left side, and vice versa. \Vhen the truss is to be adapted to a double hernia, another pad will be added.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a truss, the combination of the pad D, the plate g, having the angled end Z, the spring a, the bar 0, the plate B, and the clip a, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the pad and the plate secured thereto and provided with a slot or opening f near the upper end, of the attaching-plate 13, having a cross-bar near its upper end, and spiral springs coiled around said bar and bearing at their ends 0 c on the inner side of the plate B, the opposite ends (1 cl of the springs passing through the slot or opening f into the back of the pad, whereby the springs form the means of connecting the pad and attaching-plate, as well as the means of throwing them apart, substantially as set forth.
3. The combinationavith the attaching-plate B, the pad hinged thereto, and the spring separating the two, of an adjustable screw at the inner side of the plate B to engage the rear side of the pad and limit its throw toward the said attaching-plate, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a curved trussspring having a pad at its forward end, of the pressure-regulating slide on the spring adj acent to the pad, of less curvature than the spring, and consisting in the side bars m, under cross-pieces n, and central outer crosspiece 0, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the pad and the plate g, secured thereto and having a 'slot g, of the attaching-p1ate B, provided with a crossbar 0, a clip '5, at right angles thereto, and spiral springs coiled around said cross-bar, with their ends 0 0 under the upper end of the clip and their opposite ends projected through slot g into the back of the pad and connecting the pad to the said plate B, substantially as set forth.
