Description

(No Model.)
l G. S. WELLS & H. P. EWELL.
TRUSS. No. 485,910. Patented Sept. 2, 1890.
Flq
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. WELLS AND HERBERT PEEVVELL, OE ROCHESTER, MICHIGAN; SAID VELLS ASSIGNOR TO SAID EVELL.
TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,910, dated September 2, 1890. Application led November 23, 1889. Serial No. 331,341. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, GEORGE S. TELLS and HERBERT P. EWELL, both citizens of the United States, residing at Rochester, county of Oakland, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and usefulImprovement in lIernial Trusses; and we declare the following; to be a full, clear, and exact description. of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a truss embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View ot the same. Fig. et shows the same as adapted for a single pad.
It is the purpose of our invention to pro- Vide a truss-pad with a projection adapted to extend upward or downward along1 the groin to steady the pad and hold it in the proper position; also, to provide a truss-pad with a spring, the pressure of which against the body is due directly to the strain on the strap, which passes around the body of the wearer.
In carrying out ourinvention,Arepresents the uniting bars or wires of a double hernial truss.
B is a set-screw, by which each pad may be slightly adj usted to and fastened at any position on its supporting-bed.
O represents the pads. Ie prefer that the pads shall be of metal, although they may be ol wood or rubber or other suitable material. They are held in place by the set-screws B, which serve also as binding-screws for this purpose.
D represents a spring, preferably of brass or bronze wire, bent into substantially the form shown, and forming at their outer or free ends loops d for the ends of the bodystrap E. In the double truss one end of the strap engages one of these springs and the other end of the strap engages the spring on the other pad. It it is employed in the form of a single-pad truss, the strap would have one ct its ends attached to the loop of the spring and the other to the loop F, as shown in Fig. 1l.
G represents loops from which straps pass down beneath the body to assist in holding the pad or pads in place.
IVe usually make the device, as shown in Fig. 3, with the wires or bars A projecting at one end beyond the adjacent pad. This is to facilitate its adjustment to the body of any wearer. YVhen the pads are properly set, the projecting ends may be cut off and the ends riveted in place; or the pad-supports might be made adjustable along these frames and be set therein in any desired position of adj ustment. It will be observed that the springs D are removable, so that should any spring be of too great or too little tension it might be removed and one having a proper tension substituted in its place.
The pads O may be of any ordinary form; but we prefer that they shall have hollow pro` j ections C', adapted to extend upward or downward along the groin to aid in holding the pad in its proper place with respect to the hernia to be treated and to prevent its becomin displaced. This structure is at once light, cleanly, and adjustable to meet the requirements of any particular patient.
So far as the truss pad and spring are concerned, we would have it understood that our invention is not limited to hernial trusses, but is equally applicable to trusses adapted for the treatment of other ruptures, or where similar treatment is required.
That We claim isi l. A truss-pad provided with a semi-ellip tic spring adapted at its free end for the reception of one end ot the body-strap, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A double truss consisting of supporting bars or wires A, and trusspads located thereon, each truss-pad provided with a spring D, the body-strap having one of its ends fastened to the t'ree end of one of said springs and its other end attached to the free end of the other spring, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof we sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE S. IVELLS. HERBERT P. E\VELL.
