IMPROVEMENT lN SHIRTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,644, dated May 25, 1875; application filed April 17,1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN C. DUNHAM, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shirt, of which the following is a specification My invention consists of the shirt-front detached from the body, except at the top and for a certain distance downward, sufficiently to keep it in place, by which the front is preserved smoother and neater, is more comfortable to the wearer, cheaper to make, and easier to laundry. The invention also consists of the upper end of the front narrowed by rounding.

the corners to diminish the breadth of the connection with the yoke, by which wrinkling of the front is prevented when the arms are raised.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a shirt constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line x :r.

A is the body of the shirt, and B the front. The latter is connected to the collar 0 at the top, and the connection is made less than the breadth of the frontby rounding off the corners at D, and the front and body A are connected together from the top down to a, and

for the rest are unconnected, by which the front will not be crumpled as it is when connected, for it will not be'drawn upward by the body, which works up so as to fold and wrinkle the front when attached the whole length. The length of the connection with the body may vary according to circumstances, or it may be omitted altogether, the only connection being to the collar. The front may be stitched to the body partly or wholly, or not at all, as preferred.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1 A shirt-body having front B united only at the top with collar-band, and down the center to point m, leaving its outer edgeentirely free to yield to the movements of the wearer, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
