Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL W. SHOREY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN MODES OF ATTACHING BUTTONS.
, Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,270, dated May 11,1875; application filed November 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. SHOREY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Method of Attaching Buttons to Shoes, Garments. 850., of which the following is a description sufliciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan of a button provided with my improved attachment, but detached from the cloth or leather; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3, a vertical section, showing the buttons represented in Figs. 1 and 2 as attached to cloth by means of my improvement.
Like letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawing.
My invention relates more especially to the buttons employed in the manufacture of boots and shoes, but is also applicable to those employed for other purposes; and consists in a metallic or wire fastening entering into or through the material to which the button is attached, said fastening being in the form of a loop or staple, the free ends of which are united or secured by solder after insertion in the material, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, the object being to furnish a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The extreme simplicity of my invention renders an elaborate description unnecessary.
In the drawing, A, Fig. 1, represents a button designed for clothing; B B, the ordinary cable or thread holes; and O my improved metallic fastening. In Fig. 2, D represents a button designed for boots and shoes; at, the wire loop or eye with which such buttons are usually provided; and O my improved fastening, having its ends united. I11 Fig. 3, E represents cloth, and A D the buttons shown in Figs. 1 and 2, attached thereto by the metallic loops or staples O G.
In attaching buttons to shoes, clothing, 850., by my improved method, a wire staple or loop, 0, constructed of the proper length, is passed through holes in the button, or through the eye thereof, and then inserted in or through the material to which the button is to be at tached, after which the free ends of the staple or loop are locked or twisted together, sidelapped, over-lapped, or placed end to end, as may be preferred, and united, by means of ordinary soft solder, in any convenient manner, affording a simple, economical, and exceedingly durable fastening.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The improved method of attaching buttons to shoes, garments, &c., described, the same consisting in the metallic loop or staple 0 conneoted with the button, and having its free ends united by solder, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
SAMUEL W. SHOREY.
