IMPROVEMENT IN MODES 0F ATTACHING BUTTONS T0 SHOES AND GAITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,323, dated December 1, 1874; application filed October 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISABEL GRAY, of Harrisonburg, county of Rockingham and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Device for Attaching Buttons to Shoes and Gaiters, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in a method of attaching buttons to shoes, gaiters, or other foot-coverings, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a side view of a shoe embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an inside View of that part to which the buttons are attached.

A represents a shoe, gaiter, &c., and B B are the buttons to be fastened thereto. At the proper places,where the buttons are to be fastened to the shoe, are made holes for the means.
the button, and repassed through the same hole to the inner side of the shoe, and drawn tight enough to cause the button to rest against the outer surface of the shoe. The other buttons are fastened in like manner, and theupper end of the cord 0 is fastened to the shoe by a knot, hook, loop, or other convenient This end of the cord should be provided with a tag, a, the same as ordinary shoestrings, so that it can be easily passed through the holes in the shoe and the shanks of the buttons.
By this means the buttons are securely fastened without stitching or sewing, and if they should become too loose they can easily be tightened by simply pulling on the cord, and refastening the upper end thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described method of fastening buttons to shoes and gaiters by means of a single cord, which is secured to the shoe at the lower end, passed back and forward through holes in the upper and the eyes of the buttons,and adjustable at its upper end, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I hereunto affix my signature this 2d day of October, 1874.
