BUTTON-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,588, dated November 17,1885.

Application filed August 25, 1885. Serial No.175,292. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT G. IRVINE, of Gloucester City, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Buttondiastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device of simple construction for fastening buttons of all kinds on garments, shoes, &c., in a perfect manner, and so that they can easily be removed when desired.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved button-fastening pin. Fig. 2is a perspective view of the strip for holding the button. Fig. 3 is a side view of the button and fastener. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a crosssectional View of a modification.

The button-fastener consists of a safety-pin, A, formed of a wire bent V-shaped, and having the end of one shank, A, pointed, and the end of the other shank, A is bent to form a hook, B, for holding the pointed end of the pin. The button 0 is provided witha threadloop, D, or a loop is formed in any other suitable manner-for example, by means of the metal strip E, having laterally-projecting central tongues, F. The ends of the strip E are passed through slots in the button, and the tongues F are bent on their longitudinal axis to form aloop, G, on the under side of the button. The shank A is passed through the fabric, as is also the hook B. Then the shank A 40 is passed through the loop on the button and under the hook B, whereby the said shank is locked in place and the button is held securely.

It is evident thatabutton havinga permanent eye can be fastened in the same manner. The 5 fastening cannot tear out, as the entire length of the shank A rests against the fabric, thus giving a large bearing-surface. To prevent the fabric from being discolored by thefastening-pin, cord, thread, 850., is wound around the shank A, as shown at H in Fig. l, or the said shank may be provided with any other covering. The shank A of the fastener may be fiat or round, as may be desired.

Having thus described my invention,Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A buttonfastener consisting of a V- shaped wire having the end of one shank pointed, and a hook formed on the end of the other shank, the shank having the hook being provided with a covering, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with a button, of the strip E, having tongues F, and held on the button, and of the V-shaped fastening device A, having the end of one shank pointed, and a hook formed on the other shank, substantially as herein shown and described.
