W. T. MOORE TERMINAL FULLER fined May 6, 1926 gmentoz Patented Jan. 25, 1927'.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM THOMAS MOORE, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
TERMINAL FULLER.
Application filed May 6,
This invention relates to certain improvements in terminal pullers and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind constructed in a manner permitting the same to perfectly fit around and under the terminal together with means for imposing the requisite strain thereon to effect the desired release of the terminal from a battery post.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which constitutes a hand implement and which comprises a pair of pivotally connected arms each having jaws adapted to have effective contact with the post of a battery below the terminal, together with means carried by one of the arms engageable with the post to effect the requisite strain to release the terminal from the post.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved terminal puller whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating a puller constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in working position;
Figure 2 is a view in top plan of the structure as illust'ated in Figure 1 unapplied;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of my improved device as herein disclosed, the coactingv terminal and battery post being also illustrated in perspective.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, A and B denote two elongated crossed arms or members pivotally connected, as at 1, for relative swinging movement. The portion of the arm B forwardly of the piv otal connection 1 is of a length to terminate beyond the forward portion of the arm A and the outer end of said extended portion 6 of the arm or member B is continued by a downwardly disposed arm 2 terminating in an inwardly directed extension 3 substan- 1926. Serial No. 107,211.
tially at right angles thereto. This extens on 3 is bifurcated, as at 4, such bifurcatlon extending through the adjacent outer end portion. of the arm 2. The forwardly extended portion. a of the arm or member A. has its outer or free end portion also bifurcated, as at 5, the outer extremity a being angularly related with respect to the inner part of the portion a.
lVhen the device is initially appliediin working position, the extension 3 and the extremity a are brought into contact with the battery post P below the applied terminal T, the bifurcations 4 and 5 assuring effective contact with the post and in a manner to assure proper engagement with the terminal T from below when strain is imposed upon the puller.
In initially applying the puller in working position it is only required that a slight pressure be imposed upon the outer portions of the arms or members A and B.
Threaded through the portion 1) of the arm or member B in relatively close proximity to the arm 2 is a shank or screw 6 which, when turned in one direction, is adapted to contact with the outer end of the post P and upon continued rotation results in the requisite strain being imposed to disengage the terminal T from the post P. To facilitate the requisite turning of the shank or screw 6 the outer end thereof is provided with a cross rod or head 7 adapted to be grasped by a hand of the operator.
My improved puller operates to advantags in. the removing of a battery termina without injury to the battery as it obviates the necessity of using a chisel or heavy screw driver and hammer as is now generally done with injury to the battery. .Vith my improved pullcr, after the free extremity of the portion a of the arm or member A and the extension 3 carried by the. portion 12 of the arm or member B are engaged with the post P below the applied terminal T, it is only required that a half turn be given to the screw or shank 6 whereupon the terminal T will readily slip from the post P.
The outer end of the arm A is bifurcated, as at 8, whereby a wrench is provided for the terminal bolt 9. The outer end of the arm or member B is tapered, as at 10, to provide a screw driver and terminal scraper.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a terminal puller constructed in. accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility With which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A terminal puller comprising a pair of crossed arms pivotally connected, the forward end portion of one of said arms being provided with a downwardly directed arm terminating in an inwardly disposed extension, said extension being bifurcated with the 29 forward extremity of the second arm also bifurcated, said extension and second arm being adapted to engage a battery post at substantially opposed points below an applied terminal and a member threaded through the forward portion of the first named arm for contact with the outer end of a battery post.
2. A terminal puller comprising two crossed arms pivotally connected one to the other, the forward end portions of said arms being formed to engage a battery post substantially diametrically opposed points below an applied terminal, and a member threaded through the forward portion of one of the arms for contact with the outer end of the battery post.
In testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature.
WILLIAM T. MOORE.
