WRENCH.
Application filed November 26, 1921. Serial No. 518,068.
To all fio/wm it may concern.'
Be it known that l, WILLIAM Hneiins, a citizen of the United States, residing in .flunedale, in the county or" Carbon and State ot Pennsylvania, have invented a new and uset'ul Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
` rThis invention relates to wrenchesand has special reference to an automobile socket wrench,
Une important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of de vices of this character.
second important object ot the invention is to provide an improved wrench especially adapted :for use in cramped places Otten found in constructing or repairing automobiles. j
.4i third important object oit the invention is to provide an improved wrench having a novel arrangement of shank wherein one part of the shank is hinged to the other.
TWith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of Construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, ilustrated in the accompanying drawings7 and specifically claimed. V
in the accompanying drawings, like characters oit reference indicate like parts in the several views, andv Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the improved wrench. A
Figure 2 is a second view in elevation taken at right-angles to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line I-L lFigure 1 is a face view of the socket.
Figure 5 is a section on the line lll-H. j
Figure 6 is a view of the end of the wrench opposite the socket,
in carrying` out the objects oit 'this invention there is provided what may be termed a lower shank 10 which is enlarged at its end. as :it l1 and is provided with a socket 12 oi the usual square or hexagonal cross section. rThe upper end of this shank portion is enlarged as at 13 and provided with an open# ing 1e through it so that this enlarged end 'forms an eye. ln connection with this lower shank portion there is provided an upper shank portion 15 which is forked at its i connection.
lower end to provide jaws 16 which embrace ythe portion 13 of the lower shank and fit closely thereon. @ne or the jaws 16 is pro- 'vided with an opening 17 and the other jaw is provided with an opening 18 which is 'screw threaded so that a bolt 19 may be passed through the openings 17 and 14 and engaged in the opening 18. By this means a hinge joint :termed between the sections 10 and 15. The upper end of the section 15 .is provided with a square 2O for the reception oi'.2 any suitable wrench whereby the tool may be turned. r
`i`L `rom the construction which is set forth it will be obvious that the portions 10 and 15 may, whenever desired, be arranged at angles to each other as indicated by the dash and dot lines in Figure 2, these lines show ing two portions of the shank 10 with relation to the shank 15. it will be obvious that many other portions may be used in this By means of this hingeA arrangement the wrench maybe operated in 'close positions and, the portion 15 may, in
seine `instances be used as handle for turn* ing the wrench.
`There has thus been provided a simple and ethoient device of the kind described and Yfor the purposes speciiied.
lt is obvious that minor changes may be inane in the 'torni and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. lt is not therefore desired to conline the invention to the exact forni herein shown and described, but itis wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1n a wrench et the kind described, having a two-'pieced shank, with a hinge joint connecting said two pieces, an enlarged head on the tree end of one piece provided with a socket adapted telit a nut, an enlarged eye on the other end; a forked end on one piece7 the opposite end having a square formed to receive an operating tool; said eye being received between the arms of the fork, a bolt passingthrough one arm and said eye and screwed through the other arni of the fork.
