Appuation med August 24, '1925.4 seran No. 52,199.
vThis invention relates to rnew and useful improvements in a polish rod clamp.
One object of the invention 1s 'to provlde Va clamp, of the character described, specially designed to be securely attached to a pump polish `rod and formin means for the attachment said rod.
scribed, which maybe clamped securelyon the rod, and which will not in any way bend, dent or mar the rod."
A further feature of the invention resides in the i provision ofy 4a devicepf 'the character described which may be easily and i quickly applied to,
or detached from, 'the polish rod.. y
VA still further feature of the inventiony resides inthe provision of a polishv rod clamp, or grip, which is of sturdy construction and consequently rvery durable, and
which at the samek timezis. of simple construction soy lthat it' may be cheaply and easily produced. f
A particular: feature of this invention resides in the application of the toggle joint principle, in applying clamp jaws to the polish rod, a construction embodying a toggle joint which'f'is anelbow, or knee joint consisting of two bars. oriarms so connected that the ma be brou ht into a straight line an matll'ey to prokIuce great endwise pressure when a force is applied to bring them into this position. e
With the above and other objects in view this invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the clamp, as applied to a polish rod. y
Figure 2 shows a plan view of the clamp, with the thimbles removed.
Figure 3 shows a side elevation' of the clamp applied to a polish rod, as viewed from the-opposite side from that shown in Figure 1, and
Fi ure 4 shows a side view of a cable thim le employed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 designatesy the clamp ofl an operating cable tov bodyi which may be of arcuate forinwith its ends turned into alignment and forming the end pintles on which the cable thimbles 3, 3 work.
the cotter keys 4,14.
l The clamp is attached tothe reciprocat-- j .i V- ing walking beam (-'notshown) by means Another object ofthe invention is to pro` videa clamp, or grip of the character de-r of a suitable cable, or other flexible -member 5. `The thimbles aregrooved, as shown and the cable ends surround the thimbles and lie inthe grooves thereof, and are'se'- I cured in placeV therearound by the cable clips 6, 6. The-cable may be readily `discon nected from the clamp byremoving the cotter keys 4l and` slipping the thimbles off of the pintles 6.
the cable ends may be inserted through the pintles, and babbitted in place. As beforeA stated the clamp bodymay be made arcuate, and it is provided lwith a` side recess, or notch 9 to provide room for the pumpk polish rod l0 to which-it is attached.
Toggle arms 11,' 1.1k are pivoted to the 60 These thimbles are retained Vin place by body, vone on each side of the recess 9.-"
These arms have the spaced hingeA plates 11', 11 which embrace thefbody 1 and work on the bearing pins 12, 12 which fit through aligned bearings in said lplate and they bo y The inner ends of these toggle arms have* vertically elongated, confronting clamp jaws 13, 13, whose yfacing sides are concaved, or grooved, vertically, so as to receive, and conform to the shape of the polish rod 10.
, The armsll have the outward extensions 14, 14, one of which has an opening 15 to receive, loosely, the bolt 16, and the other extension has an endislot 17 to receive the corresponding end of the bolt, said end `of the bolt being threaded to receive the nut 18.
In order to open the jaws 18 the nut 18 may be loosened and this will permit the v release of the jaws from the polish rod so that the clamp may be adjusted up or down. If desired the threaded end of the bolt mayv be unseated from the slot 17 and the jaws swung completely open to remove the clamp from the polish rod.` The bolt 16 has a head 19 to prevent its detachment and possible loss, so that it is at all times in readiness for use.
In applying the clamp to the polish rod,
the sameis placed on the rod while the jaws are open and said jaws are then adjusted into position on opposite sides of the rod and the bolt 16 then fitted into position in the slot 17 and the nut 18 then tightened. As the nut is tightened up the rod will be forced into alignment with the pins 12, 12, by the arms 11, and on account of" the toggle action of said arms the rod will be sesurely clamped between the jaws 13, 13 and but slight tension on the bolt 16 will be required to accomplish this.
The jaws are directly opposite each other and will not bend, dent or mar the rod. This feature is very desirable for the reason that the clamp, from time to time, will be adjusted to different positions on the rod, so that, at times that part of the rod which has previously been clamped, will work through the stutling box of the pump tubing and if bent, or otherwise distorted will quickly destroy the stuhng box packing.
1. A polishrod clamp including an arcuate one piece clamp body whose ends are extended and turned into substantial alignment forming means for the attachment of a suspending cable to said body, toggle arms p-ivoted to said body, clamp jaws carried by the free ends of the respective arms, an extension carried by each arm at substantially right angles thereto and means for securing said jaws in clamping relation with the rod, said means being releasable to permit the release of the jaws from the rod.
2. A polish rod clamp including a body havin-g a side recess, bifurcated clamp arms embracing and pivoted to said body, one on each Side of said recess, a clamp jaw carried by the free end of each arm, an extension carried by each arm at substantially right angles thereto and means for securing said extensions in position to hold said jaws in clamping relation with the rod, said means `being releasable to permit the release of the jaws from the rod, the ends of said body being turned into substantial alignment and extending beyond said arms and forming means for the attachment of the suspending cable to said clamp.
3. A polish rod clamp including a clamp body having a side recess and having its ends turned into alignment forming end pintles, toggle arms having spaced hinge plates which embrace said body and are pvoted thereto on opposite sides of said recess, confrontingr clamp jaws, one carried by the tree end of each toggle arm, the facing sides of said jaws being grooved vertically to receive said rod, an outward extension carried by each arm and releasable means carried by the `free ends ofv said extensions through which said extensions may be secured in position to hold the jaws in clamping relation with the pipe.
4i. A polish rod clamp including a clamp body having a side recess, and having its ends turned into alignment forming end pintles, toggle arms having spaced hinge plates which embrace said body and are pivoted thereto on opposite sides of said recess, confronting clamp jaws, one carried by the free end ot' each toggle arm, the facing sides of said jaws being grooved vertically to receive said rod, an outward extension carried by each arm, releasable means carried by the free ends of said extensions through which said extension may be secured in position to hold the jaws in clamping' relation with the pipe and cable thimbles mounted on said pintles.
In testimony whereof I have signed my' name to this specification.
REX G, HAMAKER.
