Description

W. 13.61 D, M. CROY.
Patented Feb. 23,1875.
THE GRAPHIC CO.PHOT0.-LITH.39&4I PARK PLAGELNX edge inward and upward.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
WILLIAM D. OROY AND DAVID M. GROY, OF BLAOKSBUBG, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD THEIR RIGHT TO WILLIAM H. OOFFMAN, OF DAYTON, VA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,169, dated February 23, 1875; application filed V January 19, 1875.
machine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of our washing-machine, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the A represents a wash-tub of any suitable dimensions, the bottom B of which is corrugated on top, as shown in Fig. 1. From the tub A extend two standards, 0 O, the upper ends of which are slotted vertically for a short distance to receive the journals or tenons a a 'formed at the ends of a cross-bar, D, which is allowed to rock in said standards. In the center of the rocking bar D, and at right angles therewith, is secured a lever, E, extending a suitable distance on both sides thereof. A certain distance from the bar D each end of the lever E is mortised for the reception of the upper end of a bar or arm, Gr, pivoted therein by a pin, 1), passing through. The lower end of the arm G is rigidly attached to a presser, H, made in semicircular form and corrugated on the under side. The arm G is attached to the presser in the center, near the outer edge and at an angle, as shown, so that the rubber, when down, will stand inclining from the outer When the presser moves up it will follow the inclined sides of the tub, thus swinging outward, and as it goes down again it moves inward, and by the inclination of the pressers they will rub the clothing and force it inward toward the center of the tub, so as to turn it over and present new surfaces to the pressers at their next movement. Along the inner straight edge of each presser H is a roller, I, having its bearings in suitable ears (1 thereon.- These rollers prevent the clothes from working up on top of the pressers. The rocking bar or shaft D is held in the standards 0 by pinsz' passing through them above the tenons a, and said pins are easily removed, when the rock-shaft and lever with its arms and pressers can be lifted out of the tub when desired.
The machine is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, not liable to get out of order, and is effective and durable in operation.
The ends of the lever are provided with balls or weights to facilitate the working of the machine.
We are fully aware that a wash-tub having a corrugated bottom and two pivoted levers having wash-boards attached to their ends is, broadly, not new.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the tub A B, of the corrugated pressers H H, rigidly attached to the arms G G in an inclined position, ears dd, and rollers I I, all constructed and operated substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 15th day of January, 1875.
WILLIAM D. OROY. DAVID M. GROY.
