UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SEVIGNY AND ZOEL SEVIGNY, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 494,282, dated March 28, 1893. Application filed January 7, 1893. Serial No. 457,660. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES SEVIGNY and ZOEL SEVIGNY, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings hereunto annexed, in which- Figure 1. represents an end elevation of our improved washing machine, showing its cover, raised to the position it occupieswhen the articles to be washed, are being put into, or taken from the machine. Fig. 2. represents a side View of the machine in vertical section through the line w. 00.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
a, represents the suds box of the machine, supported on legs 12, and having a cover b, hinged to its top.
0, represents a stirrer having arms 3, journaled in a vertical position in the cover I), by the shaft d, to the upper end of which, is secured the bevel gear e.
h, represents a shaft, jonrnaled in bearings on the cover I), and having its ends provided with bevel gears g, and f, the gear f, engaging with the gear 8.
1, represents a shaft, journaled on one end of the box a, in avertical position, having its upper end provided with the bevel gear is, adapted to engage with the gear 9, and its lower end provided with the spur gear m.
n, represents a quadrant gear, adapted to engage with the spur gear m, pivoted to the cross bar q, and having secured to it, the lever 0, extending upward above the top of the machine.
r, 4", are two projections secured to the box I a, which serve to limit the movement of the lever 0.
u, represents a step, secured to the side of the box a, adapted to receive the end of the brace 25, which brace is hinged to the cover I), and serves to hold the cover in the position as shown in Fig. 1, when it is thrown up.
The operation of the machine is as follows: Water, soap and the articles to be washed, are'put into the box a, and the cover b closed; which brings the gear g, in engagement with the gear is. The lever 0, is then oscillated, which motion causes the stirrer o, to rotate reciprocally, and move the articles to be washed, about in the water.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A washing machine consisting of the box a, supported on the legs 12, having a cover I), hinged to its top and provided with the stirrer c, journaled therein by the shaft 02, to which is secured the bevel gear 6, adapted to engage with the bevel gear f, on the shaft h, which is journaled on said cover and provided with the bevel gear g, which is adapted to engage with the bevel gear is, on the shaft Z, when the cover is lowered into position, which shaft, is journaled on said box a, and provided with the spur gear an, adapted to engage with the quadrant gear n, which is pivoted to the cross bar (1, and provided with the lever 0, whereby when the said lever is oscillated, the stirrer c, is caused to rotate reciprocally; as and for the purpose described.
