Description

(No Model) M. L.- JULIAN. Washing Machine.
Patented July 6,1880.
w g 740w N.'PETER8. PHOYO-LITH'OGRAPKER, WASHINHYON. D C.
PATENT OFFICE.
MOTIER L. JULIAN, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA.
WASHING- MACHINE.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,711, dated July 6, 1880.
Application filedApril 5, 1880. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOTIER L. JULIAN, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,-reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference I0 marked thereon, making a part of this specification. I
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washingmachine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my washing-machine. Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views of parts thereof.
A represents a box of any desired dimen- 2 5 sions, supported upon suitable legs and provided with a lining, B, of zinc or other suitable sheet metal, covering the bottom and all four sides. This lining B is corrugated, as
shown, to form a good washing-surface, and
0 the corrugations on the sides may run either vertically or horizontally, or in any other convenient manner.
At one end thetop of the box has a cross-bar,-
O, over which is attached the clothes-wringer 5 D, and at this end of the box, at a suitable height, is hinged a rack, E, which is to support the tub when the wringer is used. When the rack is not inuse it is folded close to the end of the box and held by a hook, a.
0 Gr represents the hinged lid of the box A,
upon which is secured a metal frame, F, having a central hub, F, and through this hub is passed a vertical shaft, 11, carrying upon its lower end, within the box, a reel, H, and on the 4 5 upper end of the shaft is secured a bevel-gear wheel, I, as shown.
The frame F is provided with two vertical sides, F F", and from the side piece F projects an arm. F, which forms a bearing for the upper end of the shaft b.
The side piece F has a vertical slot, .cv, and a guide-flange, d, on each side of the slot. Between these guides is placed a box, J, which also projects through the slot, and has side ribs, 6, to enter notches y in the side piece F 5 There are two sets of these notches for adj usting the box in two different positions.
Through the box J is passed a bolt, h, which also passes through an elongated hub, K, the opposite end of which fits in a groove on the inner side of the side piece F and the bolt passes through a hole in the same, and is fastened by a nut, 'i.
The hub K forms a part of a double segmental gear, Lthat is, a gear having two sets of cogs on concentric circles-and this gear is provided with a suitable lever for rocking the same.
There being two holes for the bolt h in the side piece F and the box J being adjustable, as described, either set of cogs on the double gear L may be made to mesh with the bevelgear I, and thus give greater or less speed to the reel H.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a washing-machine, the combination of a reel attached to a vertical shaft, 11, havinga gear, Lsecured thereon, the double segmental gear L, with central bolt, h, the frame F, perforated side piece F and the side piece F formed with the slot 00, guide-flanges d, and notches y, and the movable box J, provided with the side ribs, 6, all constructed substan- 85 tially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of February, 1880.
MOTIER L. Jo LIAN.
