Description
J". METAIS. Washing-Machine.
' No. 200,469.- Patent d Feb. 19,1878,
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH METAIS, OF OHIPPEWA FALLS, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,469, dated February 19, 1878 application filed August 11, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, JOSEPH METAIS, of Chippewa Falls, in the county of Chippewa and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top View of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same, taken through the line a; m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is across-section of a part of the suds-box and its attachments.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to the construction and combination of certain parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
The suds-box B O is supported by legs A, and provided with a bed formed of octagonal rollers E, which are journaled in side boards D, and held in place by curved strips F. The shaft J of the rotating rubber KL is journaled in bearings formed of bars I M, and handlevers Q and bars P are employed to press down said bars I M against the stress of spiral springs H, which encircle the guide-pins G. The levers Q may be held down by springcatches It, attached to bars 0. An apron, T, (for use in putting clothes intothe machine,) is attached to brackets S at one end of the machine, and may be supported horizontally by a pivoted brace, U, when the latter is stepped in a cleat, V. An apron, A, is fixed at the other end of the suds-box in a frame, Y Z, to receive the clothes after they are washed and guide the water wrung from the clothes back into the tub. Detachable handles X are secured in keepers W, for convenience in moving the machine from place to place.
As the dirt is washed from the clothes it settles and passes through the spaces between the roller E into the lower part of the sudsboX A B O, and may be drawn off with the suds, when desired, through a hole in the bottom 0, which hole is closed by a plug, B, attached to the end of an arm, 0. The other end of the arm 0 is attached to a shaft, D, which works in bearings attached to the bottom 0. One end of the shaft D projects at the side of the machine, and to it is rigidly attached an arm, E, for convenience in operating the shaft D. When the plug B is in place the arm Eprojects upward along the side board B, and is held in place by'a springcatch, F, attached to the said side board B. The cylinder J K L is operated to rub the clothes by means of a wheel, G, attached to one of its axles. The wheel G is provided with radial handles g, for convenience in operating it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In combination with the suds-box having a discharge-aperture in its bottom, the arm 0, carrying plug B, the shaft D, arm E, and angular or shouldered spring catch F, all as shown and described.
JOSEPH METAIS.
