IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Spel itication forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 171,885, dated January 4, 1876; application filed November 20, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JAM-Es G. TEMPLETON and ZIMRI S. MOUL'ION, of Huntley Grove, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improveinentin Washing-Machines; and we do here-- by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed dra\vings,inaking a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinalvertical section of our washing-machine, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.

This invention has relation to improvements in washing-machines; and itconsistsin the'construction and novel arrangement of the various devices used, and their combination with rubber springs for lessening the strain upon the machine when in operation, all as hereinafter more fully shownand described.

In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the suds-box of our improved washingmachine, of rectangular form, and supported above the ground by means of legs a. To the center of our machine are rigidly secured uprights B, the upper ends of which are prevented from outward displacement by means of a rod, I), which passes transversely across from one upright to the other. O designates a transverse bar pivoted in uprights B in such a manner as to allow'it free vibratory motion in the length of the bed of the suds-box. Immediately above the ends of bar 0 in the uprights are arranged rubber springs D, for a purpose hereinafter described. E designates bars having their bearings-in bar O, which extend downward therefrom, and to the lower ends of which are pivoted the free ends of a handle, Gr, constructed in the usual manner, having at its upper end a transverse bar, g, for the purpose of insuring it strength. Between the two sides of the handle G, and near its lower end, is a cylindrical dasher, I, arranged in suitable bearings, and having rotary motion therein. This dasher, as will be seen in Fig. 1, is composed of bars a, arranged as shown. 23 designates a hook arranged on one of the bars E, the end of which is intended to be received in a staple, Z, arranged on handle G, for the purpose of elevating the handle and dasher I when the clothes are desired to be removed. J designates the bed ofour machine, made concave in form, the lower side of which .is provided with rubber springs L, corresponding to those above described, and which are arranged at a suitable distance apart.

It will be found in practice that the advantage of having springs D in the top of uprights B, and corresponding ones at the bottom of the bed, is that, when the machine is in operation, the strain upon the bed J and standards B is lessened, and at the same time the machine is not so liable to get out of order, and when not in operation will be held firmly in position. It will be found also that, when the clothes are being traversed by the dasher I, there is no danger of the breaking of buttons by being entangled between the bars, as the machine will give and allow it to pass without any trouble, and will, at the same time, avoid the tearing of the clothes, so often the case in other machines of this description.

If we desire, we may have a draw-off cock arranged in the bottom of the machine, whereby the soiled water may be drawn off and a great deal of trouble saved.

M designates a small catch, pivoted to the inner side of the suds-box, for the purpose of keeping the bed J in position when the machine is in position.

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A washing-machine consisting of the corrugated bed J, provided with springs L, interposed between its lower face and the bottom of the suds-box, dasher I, journaled in the handle G, and connect-ed with the standards B by means of the bars E and 0, rubber springs D, hook t, and staple Z, substantially as described.
