PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. HARPER, OF LEESBURG, TEXAS.
IMPRGVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N o. 127,052, dated May 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. HARPER, .of Leesburg, in the county of Gonzales and State of Texas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Washing-Machines 5 and I do hereby declare th at the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the con struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a top view of the wash-board pivoted together. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the wash-board and clothes-holder. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the washing apparatus. Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are modication views of the clothes-holder. V
My invention has rela-tion to washing-machines; and consists in the novel arrangement of two wash-boards, as hereinafter described,
by which the operator is enabled to rub the clothing on two corrugated surfaces at one movement thereof 5 it also consists in the construction of a novel holder or rubber, adapted for use between the wash-boards aforesaid.
The letters A B represent two ordinary washboards, the corrugated surfaces of which are arranged to face each other in the manner shown on the Fig. 2. The letters a a represent rods, which I pass through the ends of the wash-boards, and which serve as journals or pivot-rods, for the purposes hereinafter stated. The letters D represent connectingbars or braces, through the ends of which I pass the rods a., as shown on Fig. 1, and, as will readily be perceived, said rods become journals or pivot-pins for the action thereof. When thus arranged the wash-boards are united in such manner that either end of the upper board can be raised at will without breaking the connection.
In order to provide means for weightin g the upper board, I affix cross-bars thereon, marked E F, and arrange in connection therewith the removable weights H, as shown on Fig. l. The operator is thereby enabled to use one or more of said weights at will; the object being to use as many as the nature of the Work may require, and no more.
Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 represent my rubbers or clothes-holders. I have illustrated these several modifications in the drawing, not expect' ing to secure claims `upon the shape or forms thereof; but to enable those persons skilled in the art who may be desirous of so doing to provide any required form from such illustrations.
The leading idea in all said holders 1s a flattened bar with a handle or cross-head, and its opposite end pro vided with openin gs to receive the soiled clothing, and with notches, as shown. The soiled clothing is either drawn through the openings or wound around the notched end, as the case may require, and the washing is performed by placing such'clothin g between the wash-boards and moving it back and forth between them.
My washing-tub is represented on Fig. 3 of the drawing, of which K represents the main body; L, a recess with a hinged cover for the soiled clothing and N, a recess to provide play room for the lower or perforated end of the holder.
What I claim as my invent-ion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The arrangement herein described of the wash-boards A B, pivoted together by rods a and bars D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The cross-bars E F and weights II, in combination with the wash-board B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The holders, as described, constructed substantially as and for the purpose specified, in combination with the wash-boards A and B In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. HARPER.
