Description

GEORGE WILLIAM CHILEN, OF LONGBEACI-I, CALIFORNIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. February 17, 1913.
Patented Mar. 17, 191 1-.
Serial No. 751,174.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
lie it known that I Gnouein CIHLE'N, a citizen of the United States, residing at Longbeach in the county of Los Angeles and Sta te of California, have invented a new and useful I Vashing-h lachine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washing machines, and the object of my in- Vention is to provide a washing machine combining simplicity of constructimi with ease of operation and rapidity in cleansing. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Iiigure 1 a perspective view of my chine. Fig. 52 a vertical section. Fig. a sectional plan.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in the several figures.
In the casing It supported by the legs 2, I form the central chamber 3 and the two end chambers It: and 5 by means of the vertical partitions 6 and T. In the lower portion of these partitions I form the openings 8 and 9 and in the top, of the same the openings 10 and 11.
In the central chamber 3 is fitted loosely the plunger 12 which may be constructed of perforated metal or a wire netting in a wooden frame, the latter being preferable, the wire netting 12 being fitted into the wooden frame The cone 14, provided with the perforations 15 is secured in any suitable manner to the center of the plunger 12, and the plunger rod 16 is secured in the top of the cone 1-{l and passes loosely up through the orifice 17 in the top 18 and is pivoted to the cross bar 19.
In the end chambers 5 and at are fitted the plungers 90 and 21. respectively having the washers 23 and 22 around their edges to make them comparatively water tight. The sockets 2 3i and 95 are formed on or attached to these plnngers, and in these sockets are secured the plunger rods 26 and 27 which pass upward through the orifices 28 and 29 in the top 18 where they are pivoted to the cross bar 19.
The cross bar 19 projects at both ends over the ends of the casing 1 and these ends are journal ed in the bearings 30 and 31 in the arms and 33. Under the bottom of the casing is journaled the crank shaft 34 having the cranks and 36 on the ends thereof and extending beyond the ends of the casing. These crank shafts are connected with the arms 2 3 and 32 respectively.
The operating lever 37 is pivoted at one end to the standard 38 on the back of the casing top, and also to the cross bar 19, and the handle end extends out beyond the casing.
In operation, when the lever 37 is depressed the plunger-s 12, 20 and 21 are forced downward, the plunger 12 compressing the clothes in the central chamber and causing the water to pass through them and rise above the netting of the plunger. At the same time the plungers 20 and 21 force the water that is in the chambers 4: and 5 through the openings 5'' and 9 into the chamher 3. hen the plungcrs are raised the water in the chamber 21 is again allowed to saturate the clothes and to pass through the openings 8 and 9 into the chambers -21: and 5. Should any water pass the plungers 20 and .21 it is forced into the chamber 3 through the openings 10 and 1]. The water may all be drawn otf through the faucet 39.
By a continuous up aid and down ard movement of the o 'ierating lever the 'ater is forced through the clothes and rapidly cleans them.
hat I claim as my invention and desire l .etters Patent for, is
In a 'ashing machine comprising a casing, a central chamber, auxiliary chambers on opposite sides of said central chamber, partitions between and having passages connecting said chambers: a plunger in the central chamber cm'nposed of a perfm'ated base, and a conical top, a plunger rod secured to said base and slidable in said central chamber plungers slidable in said auxiliary chambers having a base and a rod, a transverse bar above the top of the casing connecting all of said plungers a c 'ank shaft under the casing, cranks on each end of said shaft arms connecting said cranks with said transverse bar, and a lever pivotally secured to the top of the casing and to said trans verse bar for operating said machine, in combination as described.
