UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
APTHA E. YOUNG, OF ORANGE, NEIV JERSEY.
WASHING- MACHINE.
SPECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,762, dated November 26,1889.
Application filed November 28, 1888. Serial No. 292,097. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, APTHA E. YOUNG, of Oran ge, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved \Vashing-Machine, of which the followi ngis a specification.
This invention relates to a washing-mm chine that will wash rapidly and will not tear the articles upon which it operates.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof with the cover and its attachments removed. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the cover and its attachments. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of the machine.
The letter a represents the mounted sudsbox, provided with splash-board b, and with two upwardly-extending bars 0, grooved upon their opposing faces and reaching to the lower end of the suds-b0X. Upon the bottom of the suds-box there is placed the fixed rubber cl. consisting of an open frame with a series of round parallel bars let into two of the parallel sides of the frame.
6 is the cover of the machine, flush with the upper edge of the suds box and supported upon lugs f, that project inwardly from the suds-box a little below its upper edge. The cover e is notched at opposite faces, and through these notches there pass loosely a pair of rails g, that engage the grooved -uprights 0. At their upper ends the rails g are connected by the handle h and by a crosspiece '2'. Between cross-piece 2' and cover 6 there is placed a coiled spring j. To the lower ends of the rails g there is secured the movable pounder 7t, consisting, like the fixed rub-' ber, of an open frame and of round parallel bars, but this. pounder is re-enforced by additional braces in, perforated for the passage of the parallel bars.
To the lower face of the cover 6 there are affixed a pair of shoulder-pieces m, which prevent the movable pounder from coming into contact with the cover. Thus a free space is at all ti mes left between the pounder and the cover.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The wash is placed upon the fixed rubber, the soap and water are introduced, and the cover is put in place. bear upon the handle h, so as to compress spring j and force the movable pounder down upon the wash. The handle being relieved, the spring will throw the movable pounder upward. Thus the pounder is rapidly reciprocated, and as it is an open frame surrounded by water it will create a suction that will draw the wash partly up with it and properly expose it to the action of the machine.
The shoulders m prevent the pounder 7c andthe wash from coming into contact with the cover.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a suds-box with grooved uprights and to arrange thereto a vertically-movable plunger. I am also aware that it is not new to provide a suds-box with grooved uprights and to arrange therein a verticallyanovable plunger with a pivoted hand-lever, and to surround the stem of the plunger with a coil-spring, and therefor claim only the parts in the precise construction and combination hereinafter pointed out.
hat I claim is- The improved Washing-machine herein described, consisting, essentially, of the sudsbox having uprights c, grooved on their opposing faces and extending above the cover, the fixed rubber arranged on the bottom of the suds-box and composed of parallel round bars, the rails 9, having tongues on theirouter sides to enter the grooves in theuprights, the pounder 70, secured to the lower ends of the rails g, and composed of parallel round bars and re-enforcing braces 7c, the cover 6, having apertures for the passage of the rails, shoulders m on the under side of the cover, the cross-bar 2', the handle h, secured to the rails, and the spring j, between the cross-bar i and the cover e, the whole adapted to operate substantially as specified.

HENRY E. ROEDER, F. v. BRIEsEN.
Pressure is now brought to.
