WRENCH.
Application led December 5, 1924. Serial No. 754,198.
The invention relates to wrenches and claimed without departing from the spirit has tor its obiect to provide a device ot this ot the invention. i character which may be easil v and quickly ln the drawing: adjusted for holding; a nut b v placing one FigureV 1 is a side elevation of a wrench, 65 i aw ot the wrench upon the nut, and pusl1 showing the same extended in dotted lines. inwardly on a slidable handle carried Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the bv the wrench, which slidable handle has a wrench showing; the handle in section on pinion and rack connection with a rack line 2-2 of Figure 1. carried bv a slidable shankl` on the outer Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sec- 60 l0 end ot which the other jaw ot the wrench tional view through the handle, showing is carried. the wrench mechanism with one side mem- At further object is to provide clamping her of the inner iaw removed. means cooperating with the rack oi the Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 shank ot the outer jaw tor holding said designates the inner .iaw'of the wrench and 65 outer jaw in adjusted relation to the inner the shank thereof. The jaw and shank 1 jaw atter an adjusting; operation. and 2 are formed 'from registering: mem- A further object is to provide means hers 3 which are provided with a lug* and whereby',7 the slidable handle during the ad- Igroove connection 4 and 5 wherebv the secjustment oit the `iaws for various size nuts tions are maintained in registration, how- 70 or other obiects will be automatically exever the sections are also secured together tended or shortened for increasing` or debv means ot transverselv disposed rivets 6. creasingV the leverage according to the size Slidablv mounted within a longitudinallv ot the article held between the iaws. disposed chamber 7 ot' the shank 2, and
A further object is to provide a wrench which chamber has its lower end open is a 75 comprising an inner jaw having' a shank, rack 8. which is carried bv the shank 9 of an outer provided with a shanr'having the outer iaw 10 of the wrench. and ro-. a rack longitudinally slidable in a chamber tatahlv mounted within the chamber 7 on of the shank of the inner iaw and an ezrthe shaft 1l is a pinion 12, which meshes tensible slidable handle mounted on kthe with the rack 8 and which pinion 12 in 80 shank ot' the inner jaw and provided with a turn meshes with a rack 13 secured to the rack opposite the rack ot the iaw carried inner side of a slidable handle 14, which rack, and a pinion carried within the shank is slidablv mounted on the shank 2 carried ot the inner jaw and meshing.; with both of bv the jaw 1. It will be noted when thev said racks. and forming means wherehv handle member 14 is forced inwardly with 85 upon an inward movement of the handle the iaw 1 in engagement with the nut or member, the jaws of the wrench will be the like, the pinion 12 will. be rotated bv the brought together, and upon an outward rack 13. therehv ironarting a movement on movement the jaws will be moved apart the rack 8 and shank 9. which. carrv the and at the same time the wrench shortened outer Iiaw 10 lin the direction of the arrow 90 or lengthened. therefore it will be seen that the outer A further obiect is to form its inner jaw i aw l() will be ouicklv moved towards the and its shank from registering sections seiaw 1 tor grinning the nut between said cured togethen thereby allowing the parts iaws. therebv obviat-inn; the use ot' adiusting;l
to be assembled therein. screws and nuts as Aat present used on 95 With the above and other obiects in View wrenches. conseouentlv savino' considerable the invention resides in the combination and time in adiusting the wrench. It will he arrangement of parts as hereinafter set seen that the iaws 1 and 10 mav be easilv forth, shown in the drawing', described and and quicklv moved anart for receiving nuts claimed, it being understood that changes ot larger size`v and this is accomplished bv m0 in the precise embodiment ot the invention imparting; a rearward pull on the handle may be made within the scope of what is member 14, which action will `cause the rack i may befrigidly heldv by tig-hteningf,r the thumb screw 15, which is threaded through the shank 2 at 16 and which serew 15 is provided with; a toothed member 17 pivoted tothe inner end thereofthe teeth ofwhich interen-l gage with the teeth of the rack 8, consequently the shanks 2 and 9 are rigidly attached to;- gether, and at the same time with the shanks 2 and 9 rigidly secured together; With.; theshanks 2 and 9 rigidly secured together the pini'on 12, which is carried by the shankA 2 will be prevented from rotating, consequently the slidable handle member M will be' prevented from movement longitudinally by the engagement of the raek 13 with the pinion 12, therefore it will` be seen that the device through the single securing means 15 will be positively held in adjusted position, and aty the same time may be easily released by the rotation of thel thumb screw 15. It will be noted' that as the jaws 1 and 110 are moved apart, the sliidable handle member 14 is automatically extended' for` increasing the leveragev as the size of the nut to bey reoeived between the jaws 1 and 10 is increased, and as the jaws 1 and 10 move together the slidable handle member 14 moves inwardly, thereby decreasing the leverage and shortening the wrenchr asa whole for use upon small nuts. Also the wrench will answer the purposes of several sizes o f wrenches, and will. obviate the necessity of a mechanic having a multiplicity of sizes of wrenches.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A wrench comprising an inner jaw, an outer jaw, a chambered shank carried by the inner jaw, a shank carried by the outer jaw and slidably` mounted in the shank of the inner jaw and entirely housedV in the shank ofthe inner jaw, ai gear rotatably mounted within the shank of the inner jaw, a rack carried by the shank of the outer jaw and meshing with said gear, a chambered handle member slidably mounted on the shank of theinner jaw and entirely housing one end thereof and a rack bar carried by the inner side of the chambered handle and slidably mounted within the shank of the vinner jaw. In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
