Be it known that I, inonen L. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Boscobel, in the county of Grant andState of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gear Pullers, of which the following is a full, clear, concise,
. and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to gear pullers or devices for removing gears, bushings, wheels and the like from associated shafts.
The objects of my invention are:
First; to provide a tool ofthis kind which is quickly adjustable to engage the gear or element to be removed.
Second; to provide mechanism whereby the jaws of the tool are drawn first inwardly to secure a tight grip on the element to be removed, and then longitudinally of the shaft to remove the element, and
Third; to provide a device of this class which may be sturdily and economically manufactured.
My invention will be more clearly under tood by referring to the accompanying drawin s, in which I igure 1 is a side View of the device;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 8-3 of Figure 1.
In the: drawings, 9 indicates a spacer or guide disposed and firmly riveted between the bars 1010, constituting a frame. Pivoted at 1111 within the frame formed by the bars 10-10 are apair of arms 12-12, each of which is provided with a jaw 13 for engagement with the gear or element to be removed. Links 1414 are pivoted at their outer'ends by means of bolts 1515 to the arms 1212, and at their inner ends to the nut 25.
The guide member 9 is provided with an aperture 16 through which passes freely a screw 17 threaded and operating through the nut 25. It willbe seen that by this construction the arms 12 may be rotated about the pivots 1111 upon longitudinal move ment of the screw 17, which slides freely through the opening 16.
In Figure 1 I have shown the gear puller adjusted and in position to remove a gear 18 from the shaft 19. In use, by moving the arms 12 the jaws 1 will be placed around the gearlS, as shown, with the end of the screw 17' in engagement with. the end of theshaft 19. Then by operating the screy 17 againstthe end of the shaft 19, the nut 25 will be moved toward the guide 9, and draw the links 14 in the samedirection. The links 14 being pivoted to the arms 12 will also draw the same inwardly to bring the jaws firmly in engagement with the gear 18, and upon further operation of the screw 17 the jaws 13, and thus the gear 18, will travel longitudinally toward the end of the shaft 19. The screw 17 is provided with a squared head to permit its rotation by means of a wrench.
What I claim is:
1. A gear puller comprising a frame, a guide member in said frame, said guide member being provided with an aperture, a pair of arms pivoted to said frame, a threaded nut disposed between said arms and having link connection therewith, and a screw operating through said guide and said nut, said arms arranged to engage a gear to be moved, and said screw arranged to engage the shaft upon which the gear is mounted.
2. A gear puller comprising a frame, a guide member in said frame, a pair of arms pivoted to said frame, a threaded nut disposed between said arms and having link connection therewith, and a screw operating through said guide and said nut, said arms arranged to engage a gear to be moved, and said screw arranged to engage the shaft upon which the gear is mounted.
3. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a pair of arms connected with said frame, a nut, a pair of link members pivoted to said arms and said nut, a screw operable through said nut, said screw arranged on operation to engage the shaft from which a member is to be removed, and to cause the arms to travel first towards the said member, and then in a direction parallel to the axis of the screw.
4. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a pair of arms connected with said frame, a nut, a pair of link members pivoted to said arms and said nut, a screw operable through said nut, said screw arranged on operation to engage the shaft from which a member is to be removed, and to cause the arms to travel in a direction parallel to the axis of the screw.
