A. F. YOUNG GEAR FULLER Filed Feb. 9, 1922 Jufly 17, 1923- INVENTOR Y TTQRNEY. v
Patentedilnly 17, 1923.

ADAM F. YOUNG, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
GEAR FULLER.
Application filed February 9, 1922. Serial No. 535,289.
citizen of the United States, and resident of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gear Pullers, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates particularly to those forms of pullers used in removing gears, pulleys, etc., from their shafts when the same have been securely fastened in place due to numerous causes.
It is the object of my invention to provide a puller of the character indicated that is simple of construction, easy of operation, of few movable parts and one in which the greater the pulling pressure, the greater the gripping force of the device upon the object being pulled.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in an operative position, the dotted lines indicating the position of the device when used on a larger gear.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing,-T show 1 a gear mounted upon shaft 2 and having a key as at 3. In contact with the outer circumference of gear 1 are two grip arms or members 1 and 5 formed as shown and having their upper ends pivotally mounted upon a support as 6 by means of pins 7 and 8 respectively. I
Passing through an opening 9 in support 6 is a threaded screw 10 formed with a hexagonal head 11 and a conical projection 12 at the ends thereof. This projection 12 fits into the center punch recess 13 which is found in all shafts. It is noted that the opening 9 in the support is larger in diameter than the screw 10.
Mounted upon screw 10 is a member 1 1 having a flanges 1516 formed integrally therewith and having pins 17-18 secured therein. Pivotally mounted upon pins 17-18 are two arms l9- 20, formed as shown. The grip arms 4E5 pass through slots 2122 cut in members 19-20 respectively. The lower curved ends of grip arms l5 have several notches cut therein as at 2324-2526, the solid portion 27 of arms 1920 being formed so as to fit in said grooves.
The device being placed in position as shown the screw 10 is turned by means of a wrench. This tends to raise member 14: which is held securely by arms 1920 which are held in grooves 25-25 upon arms 1-5 as shown. Thus the pressure is applied to the shaft and gear to force the same apart- Due to the, construction shown the harder the force applied on screw 10 the stronger .paratively slight application of power to head 11 of screw 10.
It is to be understood, of course, that changes in form, construction, proportions and method of operation may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim A pulling device comprising a screw, a
bar slidably mounted. thereon, opposed 1 clamps pivotally mounted on said bar, and having notches formed in the outer edges of their free ends, a threaded element engaging said screw, opposed slotted links pivot- ADAM F. YOUNG.
