improvements in gear pullers, particularly adapted for use to remove from a shaft or other member, such devices as gears, pulleys,
pinions, and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved gear puller having its jaws de- 7 signed and supported in such a manner that when the puller is in use, the aws or work- 10 engaging arms will grip the worktoprevent slippingof the jaws therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gear puller comprising a block having a jack screw mounted therein, and
1 the block also having links pivotally connected therewith to which a pair of jaws are pivotally connected, and each aw having one end adapted to engage said block whereby, when the screw is operated to remove the work, the jaws will be caused to firmly grip the work and thus prevent slipping.
. A further object is to provide a gear puller comprising a pair of work-engaging arms *detachably connected therewith and each being provided at oncend with a comparativcly small hook or detent adapted to engage the work and having provlded' at their opposite ends relatively larger hooks, whereby the device maybe used for different classes of Work.
A further object is to provide agear puller comprising a block having a link pivotally connected therewith intermediate each.

Figure 4 is a detailed sectional view, show- The novel gear puller shown in this inven tion comprises a block 1 having opposed fiat-like extensi'ons'integrally formed therewith. A threaded socket provided in the block 1. One end of the jack screw is provided with a terminal point 4 adapted to engage a shaft or similar device. A liead 5 is provided upon the opposite end of the jack screw for conveniently rotating it.
Links 6 are pivotally connected to the extensions 2 by means of bolts 7.. The opposite end portionsvor faces 8 ofthe extensions 2 are convexed, as shown, and are adapted to be engaged by suitable jaws or work-engag ing arms 9, as shown in Figure 1, when the jack screw 3 is mounted in a hook member 12 which, when the'arms are in the position shown in Figure 1, face outwardly. The jaws are pivotally and detachably connected to the links 6 by means of bolts '13. When these bolts are removed, the relative positions of the jaws may bereversed with respect to the block 1 and screw 3, so that the relatively larger hook members 12 may be positioned to engage the work.
An important feature of this invention resides in the provision of the converted faces 8 provided at each end of the extensions 2. These convexed faces are adapted to be engaged by-the jaws 9 while the tool is in operation. The pivotal connections 7 of the links 6 with the extensions 2, it will be noted, are spaced some distance from the convexed faces, and the jaws are so formed are engaged with their respective convexed in, a link pivotal faces 8, and the work, that the axes of the bolts 13 will be off-set from the-center lines drawn through the axes of the bolts 7 and the points of contact of the jaws with the work, as indicated by the dotted line a-a at the right hand side of Figure 1. As a result of the pivotal connections of the .jaws with the links 6, thus being offset or out of alinement with the dotted lilies a-z, the hook members 11 of the jaws will be caused to firmly grip the work, thus positively preventing them from slipping therefrom. The jaws are also so shaped that the axes of the bolts 13 are always out of alinement with the dotted line a-a, when the tool is being used to extract or remove a gear or pulley from a shaft, regardless of the size or diameter of'the work to be removed.
Figure 4 illustrates a modified form wherein the jaw or. arm 14 is provided at one end with a forked gripping member 15, adapted to be inserted beneath the head of a cap screw or bolt as shown. The opposite end of'the jaw 14 is provided 'with a hook or detent 16, similar to the hook member 11 shown on the jaws 9. The form of jaw shown in Figure 4 is particularly adapted for use to remove discs or similar members which are solid andwhich are oftsuch diameter that they can not be gripped at the periphery by the dctents 11 and 12, as shown in Figure 1. Such discs or members are usually provided with threadedsockets into which cap screws may be secured, after which the tool may be used in the manner shown in' Figure 4.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a gear puller, the combination of a block having a jack screw mounted therein, links pivotally connected with said block, jaws pivotally connected with said links, and the opposite ends of said block being convexed and adapted to be engaged by said jaws to cause the latter-to grip the work, when the screw is operated.
2. In a gear puller, the combination of a block having a 'ack screw mounted therely connected to said block at a point intermediate each end thereof and said jack screw, work-engaging arms pivotally connected with said links, and adapted to engage the ends of said'block, and each arm being provided with a hook member at each end thereof. In a gear puller, the combination of a block having a jack screw mounted therein, a link pivotally connected to said block at a point intermediate each end thereof and said jack screw, work-engaging arms pivotally connected with said links and each having one end adapted to engage said block, and each arm being provided with a hook member at each end thereof, said hook members being of different sizes whereby the gear puller may be used for different kinds of work. i
4. In a gear puller, the combination of a block having a threaded socket, a jack screw mountedin said socket, there being opposed flattened extension on said block, the opposite faces of said extensions being convexed, p'ivot pins in said extensions and spaced fromsaid convexed faces, links pivotally connected at one end to said pivots, and jaws pivotally connected with the opposite ends of said links, and each having one end adapted to engage one of said convcxed faces to v prevent said jaws from spreading when the tool is used.
5. In a gear puller, the combination of an elongated block having a jack screw mounted therein and having its opposite ends convexed, pivot pins mounted in said block and spaced from said convexed faces, links connected at one end with said pivots, a pair of jaws pivotally connectedwith said links and each adapted to engage one of said convexed faces, and the pivotal connections of said jaws with said links being out of alinement with the pivots in said block and the points of contact of the jaws with the work, when the tool is operated, whereby an inward force will be transmitted to the work-gripping ends of said jaws to prevent slipping.
6. In a gear puller, the combination of an elongated block having a jack screw mounted therein, there being flat-like-extension on said block and having their op )osite faces convexed, a pivot pm in one 1 extension 'spaced from its complementary convexed face, links connected at one end with said pivots, work-engaging arms also pivotally connected with said links and each having one end portion adapted to engage one of said convexed faces, and the pivotal connections of said arms with said links being out REUBEN A.
