W. H. .CARTWRIGHT TOOL 1923 2 SheetsSheet 1 Filed May 25,
INVENTOR A'ITORNEY WITNESS:
Patents Apr. 29, i924.
STATES PATENT 'orr TOOL.
Application filed May 25, 1923. Serial No. 641,488.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. CART- WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tool, the general object of the invention being to provide means for facilitating the replacing of the valve spring locks in the grooves of valve stems.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed outin. the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or correspondin parts throughout the several views, and In which Figure l is a side-view of the tool.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing a lock in osition therein.
- igure 3 is a sectional view.
Figures 4 and 5 are views showing how the device is used.
Figures 6, 7 and 8 are views showing the ditferent kinds of locks with which the tool ma be used.
is is understood there is considerable difficulty attached-to the replacement of locks for valve springs, due to the almost inaccessible place in which the lock is situated and also due to the small size of the lock. The valve spring mustbe lifted by a lifting device so as to move the spring seat off the lockso that the lock can be placed in the notch or opening in the valve stem. In carrying out my invention I provide a tool whicli consists of a pair of spring jaws 1 which are connected with a head 2 having a threaded opening therein to receive the threaded end of a tubular handle 3. The handle is locked to the head by means of the lock nut 4. A plunger rod 5 passes through the handle and through the space between the jaws. The plunger is provided with a head 6 and a spring 7 is placed on the plunger with one end bearing against the end of the handle and its other end against the head. Thus the spring will hold the lunger in retracted position with its enarged end 8 -engaging the inner end ofthe handle. The spring jaws are provided with inwardly extendin extremities 9 and side flanges 10 for gripping and holding the crescent-shaped lock 11 for the valve spring. These a-ws can be made in different sizes to fit different sizes of locks and they can also be changed so as to suit different kinds of locks, three different kinds being shown in the drawings.
By moving the jaws upon the handle they can be made to fit different sizes of locks and it will of course be understood that the tool can be used on any kind of motors which are provided with valve spring locks.
In using the tool the lock'is placed between the jaws, as shown,'and then the lock is placed in the groove in the valve stem, after the spring is lifted by, means of the tool. When the lock is in position the plunger is pressed upon to force the lock from between the 'a ws. Thus the lock can be easily and quickly placed in position without danger of dropping it.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent- I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A tool of the class described comprising a head, a pair of jaw members connected therewith,-a tubular handle connected with .the head, a plunger passing through the handle and having an enlarged end located between the jaw members, a head onv the outer end of the plunger and a spring on the plunger having one end bearing against the end of the handle and its other end against the head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILLIAM HOOPER CARTWRIGHT.
