To all whom z'' may concern.'
Be it known that I, BERNARD MORGAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode island, have .invented a new and Improved Hand-Tool,
of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved hand tool, which is simple and durable in construction, easily manipulated and designed for various uses by mechanics, plumbers, chauffeurs and other persons, to permit such persons to use the tool as aclamp, or as a spreader and stretcher for coil springs, lor as a valve lifter, etc.
For the purposes mentioned, use is made of a screw rod, oppositely-disposed jaws, of which one is fixed on-the screw rod and the other is movable on the screw rod in the direction of the length thereof, each of the jaws being provided at one side of the screw rod with afork and at the Opposite side with a pin, and a nut screwing on the screw rod and moving with the movable jaw, the nut having peripheral' teeth engaged by a reversible pawl held in a hand lever mounted to swing on the nut.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in

, Cn one end of the screw rod A is secured a B operating in conjunction with a jaw C movable on the screw rod A, andarranged opposite the jaw B. The fixed jaw B and the movable jaw C are provided at one side Ot the screw rod A with oppositelydisposed forks B', C and the said jaws are provided on the Opposite side of the screw rod A with pins B2, C2 extending outwardly and arranged Opposite'each other, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. The movable jaw C is provided with a forked hub'C3 mounted to slide loosely on the mrew rod A, and the members/of the hub C3 are provided with inwardly-extending lugs Ct, C5 engaging a longitudinal groove A formed in the `screw rod A so that' the movable jaw C is held against' turning on the screw rod A. Between the members of the hub C3 is arranged a nut D screwing in thearrow rod A, and on the said nut D ismjunted to swing loosely theA forked end E 'of' a hand lever E provided with a hollow handle E2 adapted to be taken hold of by the operator for imparting a swinging motion to the lever E. The nut D is provided on its peripheral face with-teeth lD adapted to be engaged by a reversible pawl F held in the inner end: of the hollow handle E2 of the lever E, and the said reversible pawl F is provided with a stem F extending through a hollow handle E2 and terminating at its outer end in an angular arm F2 adapted to engage diametricallydisposed notches E3 arranged on the outer end` of the hollow handle E2. A spring Gr extends within the hollow handle E2 and presses against the reversible pawl F so as to hold the same in engagement with adjacent teeth D of the nut' D and at the same time hold the arm F2 in engagement withv either of the notches E3, as plainly indicated l in Fig. 2.
When the several parts are in position as shown in Fig. 2 and a swinging motion is given to the handle E2 of the lever E in the direction of the arrow a"then the pawl F carries the nut D along and thus screws the same outward on the screw rod A thereby moving the movable jaw C in a like direction, that is, away from the fixed -jaw B. When. the lever E is swung backward in the inverse direction'ot1 the arrow a then the pawl F glides over the teeth D and hence the nut D andthe movable j aw C remain at a standstillA When it is desired to move the movable jaw C toward the 'xed jaw B then the operator pulls the arm F2 outward to disengage the pawl F trom the teeth D', and. then gives a half turn to the arm F2. so as' to reverse the pawl F relative to the teeth D, and when the operator now releases thel los arm F2 then the spring Gr moves the pawl F reverse direction to the'one previously occupied. When a. swinging motion is now given to the lever E inthe reverse direction of the arrow a then a like turning motion is transmitted tothe nut D to screw the same inward on the screw rod thus moving the jaw C toward the fixed jaw B. When the lever E is swung in the direction of the arrow a the pawl l" glides over the teeth Dand consequently the mit D and the jaw C remain at a standstill.
Thev tool described may be used i'or various purposes.v for instance, shown in Fig. l, a spring H can be stretched by attaching the ends of the spring to the pins C2, B and then manipulating the lever E so .as to move the jaw C outward away irom the aw B thus stretching the spring H. W hen the pavvl F is reversed then the tool can be used for clamping purposes (see Fig. by placing the jaws B and C in engagement with the parts to be clamped and then manipulating the lever E so as to move the jaw C toward the tiXed jaw B thus clamping the parts together. The tool can also be used for lifting a valve oil its seat, indicated, for instance, in Fig. 4, itbeing understood that` in this case the slotted jaws B, C straddle the stems, and on imparting a swinging motion to the lever .ll tie movable jaw C is moved outward on the screw rod A, thus lifting `the valve stem fand consequently the valve off its seat. l lhen it is desired to compress a spring, such spring may be placed within the jaws B and C and the jaw C moved inward on the screw rod for the lpurpose mentioned.
ln ,the foregoing it is only intended to give a'few examples of the use of the tool, as-it is evident that the same can be used for many purposes.

3. A hand tool, comprising a screw rod provided with a groove extending lengthwise of the screw rod, a slotted jaw fixed at one end on one end of the said screw rod and extending at a right angle thereto, a
movable jaw extending parallel to the said fixed slotted jaw and slotted at one side opposite the jaw having a forked hub Slidahly 'engaging the said screw rod, lugs -on the hub engaging the said screw rod groove, a nnt screwing on the said screw rod and arranged between the members of the said forked hub, the said nut being provided on its periphery with teeth, a` forked hand lever mounted to swing loosely on the said nut and having a hollow handle provided at its citer end with diametrically disposed notches, a. reversible pawl engaging the said nut teeth and provided withv a stem extending loosely through the said hollow handle, the outer end of the said stem having an angular arm adapted to engage the said notches in the handle, and a spring within the hollov.7 handle and pressing the said pawl to hold the latter in engagement with the said nut teeth and to hold the arm et' the said stem'in engagement with either of the said handle notches.
