rim/a T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that i, don}: Emmi; LENA- HAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburgh, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrcnches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches of the ratchet type.
The object of the invention is to provide a handle and a jaw carrying or gripping member adjustably connected so that said member may be arranged either in alinement with or at any desired angle rela' tively to the handle thereby adapting it for use in out of the way places and which when so connected strong and durable and capable of resisting all strains to which it may be subjected.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown, described and claimed.
in the accompanying drawings:-
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the wrench constituting this invention taken from one side.
Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section thereof, and
F 3 is a detail perspective view of the jaw member.
In the embodiment illustrated. a handle 1 is shown having at one end a disc-shaped head 2 slightly ofli-set from the face of the handle as shown at 3 and which is provided with a plurality of sockets 4 arranged on one face thereof adjacent its periphery, any desired number of which may be employed, and which are designed to receive a pin carried by the jaw member presently to be described.
A threaded stud or stem 5 extends centrallyfrom the head 2 on one face thereof and has a thumb nut 6 engaged therewith for securing the aw member 10 in adjusted position. The nut 6 has a sleeve-like extension 7 which is designed to fit within a socket 11 formed at the outer end of the shank 12 of the jaw member 10. This socket 11 extends through the shank 12 and is reduced at the inner face of said shank as shown at 13 said reduced portion13 being of a size to fit snugly around thesaid stud (see Fig. 2).
he jaw member 10 has a head '14 at its outer end arranged in longitudinal alinement with the shank 12 thereof and which 18 provided with a recess 15 to form gripping jaws 16 and 17. The shank 12 of the member 10 is provided also on its inner face with a laterally extending stud 18 which is designed to enter one of the apertures or sokets 41 in the head 2 of the handle member 1 for locking the jaw member 10 in adjusted position as is shown clearly in Fig. 2.
From the above description it will be obvious that the jaw member may be adjusted at any desired angle relatively to the handle by positioning the stud 18 of said member in one of the sockets of the head on the handle and then screwing home the thumb nut thus adapting the wrench for use in close places rendering it especially useful in ponnection with automobile valves and the ike.
I claim 1. A wrench of the class described, comprising a handle terminating at one end in a jaw-carrying member with an elongated threaded stud projecting from one face thereof and provided with a circular series of sockets concentric with the stud and a nut threaded to be applied to the stud, and a jaw member for application to the threaded stud and to receive the nut entering the jaw member for a distance less than the thickness of said jaw member, whereby the handle member and the jaw member may be clamped together in adjusted positions.
2. A. wrench of the class described comprising a handle member with a disc shaped head having a circular series of sockets therein, a screw threaded stem rising from an axial point of the disc shaped head, an axially extended nut applied to the threaded stem and entering the disc shaped head and clamping the latter and the screw threaded stem together, and the stud on the jaw member being in fixed relation thereto and entering the head of the handle member for adjusting the relation of the handle and jaw member to fixedly hold the two members of the wrench in different position.
3. A wrench of the class described comprising a handle and a jaw carrying member, the handle being provided at one end with a head having a socket in one face thereof, the jaw carrying member having a shank to overlie the socketed face of said handle head, a threaded stud carried by said head on the socketed face thereof, said jaw carrying member having an aperture in the handle thereof to fit over said stud, a stud extending from the overlying face of the handle or shank of said jaw member, said handle head having a plurality of sockets arranged concentrically with the central stud thereof to receive the stud on the jaw carrying handle member, and a nut engaging said threaded stud whereby said members are locked in adjusted position.
4. A wrench of the class described comprising a handle having a disc-like head at one end thereof and a jaw carrying memher having a shank with an aperture in its free end and a laterally extending stud on one face spaced from said aperture, said handle head having a centrally disposed screw threaded stud and equipped With a plurality of concentrically arranged sockets to receive the stud on the jaw member, and a nut en gaging said threaded stud to lock said members in adjusted posltion.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.
JOHN ELMER LENAHAN.
