Description

July 11, 1950 E. c. MCVARISH CURTAIN STRETCHER ROLLER Filed Jan. 13, 1948 INVENTOR. EUGENE [3. Mc VARISH ATTORNEY Patented July 11, 1950 ITED S TATES PATENT OFFICE 2,514,663 s'mn'ronaanqnnnn Eugene C, McVaris h, .Brooklym. Anuli a i n J anua 13, 1 a :No.-1,99 3
.4 Claims.
1 This invention relates to devices for attaching curtains to curtain stretchers. "Itj-is primarily within the contemplation of my invention to provide a hand operable device which could conveniently be employed to secure a curtain to the framework of a conventional curtain stretcher without-the danger of injuring the hands or'fi-ngers by the nails or pins adapted to receive the curtain. And in this aspect of my invention it is an object to provide the device with a novel type of roller member for progressively applying a curtain along the surfaces of a stretcher frame in such a manner as to effect a secure engagement of the curtain uponthe protruding nails or pins.
It is also an object of thiSinvention to provide the said roller member with a yieldable curtain .engagin -membertha-t will neither do damage to the curtain being secured to the stretcher, nor be damaged by the pins or nails as would be the case if rubber or other solid. .resilient materials .were m loy 7 ,A further object of m invention is to enable the device to be operatively applied to curtain structures regardless of the spacin between the ins- Another object is to provide guiding means for aiding in operatively moving the device along the path of the frame to which the curtain is being attached.
And it is Within the contemplation of this invention to provide a simple, easily constructed and inexpensive device capable of accomplishing the functions and objects aforesaid.
Other objects, features and advantages will appear from the drawings and description hereinafter given.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure '1 is a'perspective view of a preferred form of my invention being operatively employed to secure a curtain to a conventional curtain stretcher.
Figure 2 is a somewhat enlarged fragmentary and part sectional plan of the device of Fig. 1 in operative engagement with a curtain stretcher.
Figure 3 is a part elevation and part section of the device of Fig. 2 taken along line 3-3.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side view of Fig. 3.
Figure 5 is a front elevation of the coil spring employed in my invention prior to forming into a ring as suggested by the dot-dash curves.
Figure 6 is a bottom view of Fig. 5.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary section, like Fig. 3, of a modified form of my invention, and
Figure 8 is a fragmentary side view of Fig. '7.
In the preferred form of -my invention illustrated, a roller It contains therein an axial shaft 1 l extending upwardly partly into the body of the roller, the bottomof the shaft having the-handle '|2 pivotly attached thereto. The said shaft is rotatably mounted within the axial recess l3 of the roller, and contains at its upper portion c.
threaded aperture M with which the threaded shank I5 of the shoulder screw I6 is in engagement, the head I! of the screw being disposed upon-the surface |8of the upper central cavity l9 of the roller. The arrangement is hence such that the shaft H and associated parts are-in dc.-
the roller, said base comprising two spaced ears 20 with coaxial apertures 2| in registry with the aperture 22 of the handles upwardly extending lug 23 disposed between said cars. A screw 25 extends through said apertures, the head 26 thereof and the knurled nut 21 on the shank thereof engaging o-ppositesides of said ears.
Secured to the underside of the roller is a plate 28 with a central aperture 29 throu h which the'shaft I extends, the periphery- 30 of the plate protruding beyond the roller and being upwardly curved to give the plate a cupped or dish-like appearance.
The periphery of the roller contains an annular arcuate channel 3| containing spaced transversely extending grooves 32, the top of the roller containing, preferably integral therewith, the guide disc 33 having its peripheral portion 34 overhanging the channel 3|.
Disposed within the annular channel 3| is the circular spring coil 35, flanked and held against detachment from the roller by the said plate 29 and disc 33. In the form shown, the terminals 36 and 31 of the spring wire are in overlapping abutment, and are secured together by welding, or by any other suitable means.
In applying the coil to the roller, it is preferred first to form the coil into a circular ring, securing together said ends 36 and 31, and then, by stretching the coil, slipping it over the disc 33 until it snaps into place within the channel 3|. If preferred, to prevent unnecessary stretching of the coil, it could be slipped over the lower rim 38 of the roller before the plate 28 is secured in place, and thereafter snapped into place as aforesaid. In either case, the convolutions of the coil are so arranged that they will fit into the grooves 3 32, whereby the coil will be held against slipping or rotating circumferentially within channel 3|.
In operatively employing the device, it is preferred to maintain the handle l2 angularly with respect to the rollers axis of rotation, as shown in Fig. 1, for convenient manipulation and to keep the hand remote from the stretcher, the desired positioning of the handle being accomplished.
by manipulating nut 21 in known manner.
The guide disc 33 is, in the preferred manner of operating this device, placed against the upper surface 39 of the curtain stretcher 40 containing the pins 4| arranged in a row in conven tional manner. With the curtain 42 applied against a selected starting point of the frame of the stretcher and the roller spring 35 in pressthey will. obviously yield when engaged by a pin, this slight displacement of a coil preventing a bending of the pin and permitting smooth operation. The positioning of the coils within the grooves 32 assures uniform spacing of the convolutions, and therefore enhances the smoothness-oi action of the device.
the roller 43 contains a smooth annular channel 44 containing the coil pring 45. It will be noted that the outer portions 45 of the coils are flattened, thereby providing relatively greater contact surface with the curtain as it is being applied.-
.In the above description, the invention has been disclosed merely by way of example and in '35 In the modified form shown in Figs. 7 and 8,
preferredmanner; but obviously many variations 5 and modifications may be made therein which .will still be-comprised within its spirit. It is to not limited to any specific form or manner of a practicing same, except insofar as such limitations are specified in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device for applying a curtain to a curtain stretcher, a rotatably mounted roller, and a coil-spring ring mounted over the outer periphery of the roller, the periphery of the roller containing an annular channel, the coil-spring ring being partly disposed within said channel, the channel containing along its circumferential extent a plurality of spaced transverse grooves within which are disposed the adjacent inner portions of the springs convolutions.
2. In a device for applying a curtain to a curtain stretcher, a rotatably mounted roller, the periphery of the roller containing an annular channel, a coil spring mounted over the outer periphery of the roller and being partly disposed within the channel, and a guide disc at the top of the roller and having a peripheral portion extending outwardly beyond the channel, the coil-spring ring protruding outwardly beyond said peripheral portion of the guide disc.
3. In a device for applying a curtain to a curtain stretcher, the combination according to,v
claim 2, further provided with a circular plate at the bottom of the roller the periphery of which underlies the said coil-spring ring.
,4. In a device for applying a curtain to a curtain stretcher, the combination according to claim 3, the said periphery of the plate being upwardly bent towards the coil-spring ring.
