Description

C. C. REAVEL.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 16, 1920.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLYDE C. REAVEL, 0F MARION, INDIANA.
WRENCH.
Application filed September 16, 1920.
To all an ham it may concern.
Be it known that I. CLYDE C. REAVEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eiticient and at the same time useful wrench having in addition to an effective leverage when in operation, a convenient means of adjustment of the movable jaw whereby the positioning of the latter with relation to the fixed jaw, for engagement with an interposed object, may be effected unassisted by the hand which grasps the operating grip of the wrench, and with these objects in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts, of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1, is a side view of a wrench embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a rear view of a portion of the wrench to show the means for locking the swivel grip.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sleeve member of the movable jaw.
The wrench consists essentially of a shank 10 arrying the fixed jaw 11 and provided at the opposite end with an enlargement 12 which is threaded to form a feed s rew, a movable jaw 13 having keepers 14 which are mounted to slide upon the shank in the opening and closing movements of the aws and a swivel grip or handle 15 intermediately threaded for engagement with the feed s' rew 12 and having an internal groove 16 for engagement with the lip 17 of the inner end of the sleeve 18 of the movable jaw. Qbviouslv the adjustment of the movable i aw is effected by feeding movement of the movable or swivel grip or handle through action of the latter upon the feed screw 12 and when the jaws have been brought into contact with opposite sides of an object to be grasped, a vigorous turing movement of the grip will serve to bind the aws upon the object in a manner similar to that which is common to a pipe or rod wrench so that even with flat faced jaws, the apparatus described is adapted in a measure to perform the functions of a pipe wrench. Obviously Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
Serial No. 410,693.
movement of the jaws by the hand which grasps the grip or handle without necessitating the holding of the head of the wrench with the other hand.
hen the desired adjustment of the jaws has been effected to grasp an interposed object, the swivel grip may be locked against rotation by means of an eccentric lock 19 mounted upon the sleeve of the movable jaw for engagement with the extremity of the grip or handle as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
The use of an eccentric lock tor the handle, such as shown, makes for the ready release of the wrench from a nut with one hand in case the jaws have become bound on the nut. Turning the handle in a reverse diretion from that in which it is turned to tighten the movable j aw, tends to swing the eccentric 19 out of locking position and thus makes it unnecessary to remove the working hand or else use the other hand to first re lease the lock such as is the case where positive locks are employed. Again the use oi" an eccentric lock, such as shown, because of its trictionally engaging the handle provides for the nicest adjustment of the two jaws which is not possible where positive locking elements have to be engaged with ea h other.
The invention having been desnibed. what. is claimed as new and useful is 1- A wrench having a shank carrving a fixed jaw and provided at the opposite end from the jaw with a feed screw. a movable jaw provided with a sleeve slidably mounted on the shank of the fixed jaw, a grip or handle interiorly threaded for engagement with the feed screw and having an internal groove adjacent its upper end slidably engaging a lip on the inner end of the sleeve. and a locking device consisting of an eccentric disk pivotally mounted on said sleeve and engageable with the upper end of the handle in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CLYDE C. REAVEL.
