Description

A. c. RIGGS I REMOVABLE COVER Filed June 25, 1925 Patented May 4, 1926.
ADOLFO C. RIGGS, OF COVINA, CALIFORNIA.
FFIQE.
REMOVABLE COVER.
Application filed June 23, 1925. Serial No. 39,029.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLFO C. RIGGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Covina, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Removable Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a removable cover adapted to be attachedto various sizes of barrels or kegs to form a temporary closure.
The invention pertains to closures or covers for barrels or kegs in which produce is displayed for sale and in which it is desired to have a cover of neat appearance which will allow'inspection of the goods and which will also form a tight cap or covering on the barrel or keg to prevent entrance of dirt, flies or the like.
One of the features of my invention is a clamp adapted to be secured around the upper rim of the barrel and having a capping v ring extending inwardly over the top of the barrel. In the device illustrated the capping ring is of a fixed and standard size,
Whereas the clamping strap is so constructed as to accommodate barrels of considerable difference in diameter. A lid, preferably formed of glass, is hinged to one side of the capping ring and is also swivelled to the ring so that the lid may be swung around completely out of the way for filling or cleaning the barrel or container.
My invention will be more readily understood from the following description and drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my removable cover secured to the top of a barrel.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional elevation on the line 22 of Fig. 1., showing the removable cover detached from the barrel.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line S3 of Fig. 2 in the direction of the ar-' rows, showing the clamping straps.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail of a section shown in Fig. 3, illustrating the manner of securing the glass to the lid ring.
Fig. 5 is a plan of the hinge in the direction of the arrow 5 of Fig. 1, showing the manner of mounting the hinge and the swivel to give two motions to the lid.
In the illustrations a barrel, keg or the like is designated by the numeral 1, in which even in standard sized barrels or kegs the upper edge or rim 2 varies considerably in diameter. Moreover, barrels and kegs of different makers differ to such an extent that a fixed or definite sized lid does not make a satisfactory removable cover. The removable cover is designated generally by the numeral 3 and is constructed in detail with an 1adjustable clamping strap and a fixed sized The strap 1 comprises right and left sections 5 and 6 secured by clamp screws 7. Each of the sections 5 and 6 are preferably formed of similar straps 8 and 9 having eyes 10 formed by bending the straps through which extends capping ring pins or rivets 11. have outwardly extending lugs or flanges 12 through which the clamp screws 7 extend. In order to allow quick adjustment one of the flanges may have an aperture 13 and the other a slot 1 1- so that the clamp screws 7 may be readily inserted and clamped tight by a thumb nut 15. In this manner the clamping strap is formed of two ,pairof hinged straps connected by a pin so that they may swivel and the two pairs or sets of straps may be drawn tightly together to form a tight clamp on. the rim of the barrel. This also adds to the strength of the barrel in handling.
A pping ring 16 formed of preferably a flat annulus of metal of sufiicient width to cover all the various sizes of barrels to which the clamping strap may be accommodated, is secured to the strap by the rivets 11, the connection being sufficiently loose to allow the strap to be tightened or loosened as required.
The lid designated generally by the nu meral 17 is built up with a lid ring 18 having a. vertical flange 19 and a horizontal. flange 20. A sheet of glass or the like, 21, having a rubber or other resilient packing ring 22 is clamped to the underneath surface of the horizontal flange by means of bolts 23 secured to a stop ring 24. In this manner by tightening the bolts the ring 2 1 may be pressed against the lower surface of the glass evenly and form a tight closure with the lid ring 1.8. a
The lid 17 is provided with a hinge 25 having a fixed plate 26 secured to the lid ring 18 by means of rivets 27 and having a horizontal hinge pin 28- connecting the fixed plate with a swivel plate 29. This latter is secured to the capping ring 16 by Each of the sections 8 and 9' 4 i0 and means of a swivel pin 30. This pin has suitable heads to allow swivelling of the lid on a vertical axis and also allows the lid to be folded backwards on the horizontal pin 28. Nhere merchandise such as fruit or the like can be removed from the barrel with one hand it is more convenient to raise the lid on its horizontal hinge, but if both hands are required such as removing butter from a butter tub it is more convenient to swivel the lid on the vertical swivel pin. The hinge may be arranged and the swivel pin so positioned that when swivelled the lid will hang downwardly alongside of the barrel or tub and thereby be out of the way.
T he particular construction of my removable cover may be considerably changed to adapt it for use with different materials. The construction shown is formed with a metal frame but a wood construction could readily be adapted for the purpose and have the same general characteristics. Moreover, my device may be adapted to cover square or rectangular boxes or other irregular shaped containers. Thus, various removable covers may be made in accordance with the spirit of my invention having a clamping device which may be accommodated to various sizes of containers within reasonable limits and having a fixed capping ring or the like to form a closure on the top or" the container with a lid attached thereto.
Having described my invention, what 1 claim is: p
1. A removable cover comprising in combination a plurality of flexible straps connected in pairs, pins forming a pivotal con nection for said pairs of straps, clamping screws connecting each pair of flexible straps together, said straps and connectlons allowing the straps to be clamped to various sized containers, a fixed sized capping ring secured to said pins, said ring comprising a horizontal flat annulus and a lid connected to the capping ring and adapted to be opened or closed.
2. A removable cover comprising in combination a plurality of flexible straps connected in pairs by means of a pivotal connection, clamping screws connecting each pair of flexible straps together, said straps and connection allowing the straps to be clamped to various sized containers, a fixed sized capping ring secured to the clamping straps, said ring comprising a horizontal flat annulus, a lid, a hinge having a fixed plate secured to the lid, a horizontal hinge pin, a swivelling plate connected to the pin and a vertical swivel pin through the swivel plate connecting the swivel plate to the capping ring, said swivel. pin being positioned whereby the lid may be swivelled vertically and hinged downwardly to hang along the side of the container.
3. A removable cover comprising in combination a clamping strap comprising two pairs or flexible strap elements, said elements having an eye and a pivotal pin therefor, the free ends of said strap elements having flanges and clamp screws engaging said flanges, a capping ring comprising a horizontal flat annulus connected to the said pivotal pins and a lid hinged to said cap- I ping ring.
4. A removable cover as claimed in claim 3 having in addition a vertical swivelling connection between the hinge and the capping ring whereby the lid may be swivelled on a vertical axis and hinged downwardly along the side of the container.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
A. G. RIGGS.
