Application filed March 20, 1925. Serial .No. 16,924.
This invention relates to. funnels that are used for filling narrow moiithed bottles, or receptacles generally, the invention having for an object to rovide a novel and im proved funnel having'means applied thereto to permit of escape of airfrom the bottle, or other receptacle being filled while at the same time providing an adquate support for said funnel.
For further comprehension of the inven tion, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a perspective view showing a funnel having the invention applied thereto.. 1
Fig. 2 is a top end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. d is a top end view showing'amod ified construction.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view takenon the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Figs. 6 and 7 and 8 are top end views showing other modifications to which the device may be applied.
Referring now to the drawing, the funnel comprises a main body 10 of the usual frustro-conical form, having an aperture in the bottom thereof from which a neck or spout 11 leads downward, this neck or spout being also of frusto-conical form, but of less taper than the main body of the funnel.
To permit of escape of the air when the funnel is being used, a number of projections 12 are provided up the side thereof, and .on the outer side of the funnel wall, which may be formed, as in Figs. 1 to 3, by channeled members 14 soldered or otherwise secured at the funnel, these members preferably extending from the top of the funnel to a point about midway of the length of the spout 11, and having their lower ends beveled ofl. as shown at 15 to better engage in a small necked bottle. When the funnel is in use the air escapes from the bottle or other receptacle through passages aroundthe projections 12, thereby enabling the filling to proceed at increased speed.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing the projections are constituted by a number of flutes 17 formed in'the side of the funnel 10" by indenting or pressing the same inwardly at; the desired points.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 7, the flutes 17 formed on the side of the funnel l0 are pressed outwardly at the desired points.
In the form of the invention shown in and which has a series of channeled members 14 extending up the sides thereof to provide the air passages around the funnel when placed in the neck of a bottle, or receptacle. The member l0 does not extend downward over the spout of the funnel when in place thereon, having an opening 19 in the bottom to receive the said spout, and the channeled elements 14: have their main bodies terminating at the lower edge of the member 10?, and are provided with extensions 20 that project downward along the sides of the spout to engage the latter. These extensions 20 are arranged to be movable on the said lower ends of the members 1 1-, as on hinges, so that their bottom ends will press against the spout 18' of the funnel. To this end the said extensions are connected to the main bodies of the said channeled members by means of narrow necks 21, and converge downward toward one another at such angles as may be needed to ensure of their lower ends fitting against the spout of the smallest funnel to which it may be desired to apply the device, these extensions springing outward when the device is applied to a large funnel. These swinging adjustments of the extensions'20 are very valuable for use when a shallow receptacle is to be filled. The receptacle being so shallow that the bottom of the spout of the funnel touches the bottom of a the receptacle, while the funnel has not descended far enough for support on the mouth of the receptacle, but falls sideways.
The extensions may then be adjusted outwards toform abutmentsto seek support against the mouth of the said receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by til Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
The combination in a funnel attachment havin a body, and a series of projections 5 exten ing up the side of said body on ,the outer face thereof to provide for air escape passages, of extensions hinged on the lower ends of the said projections, to be engaged downward along the sides of a funnel spout, and permitting of a lateral swinging adin justment to form abutments against the mouth of a receptacle to be filled.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
SIMON LEPESHKIN.
